ANAPA AIRPORT, April 06, 17:47 /ITAR-TASS/. The airport of Simferopol,
the capital of the Republic of Crimea – a former Ukrainian region that
recently joined Russia – may in the future become one of Russia’s
largest with an annual throughput capacity of over 5 million
passengers, Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said Sunday.

The current airport compound with a few passenger terminals makes it
possible “to easily increase the airport’s throughput capacity to
2.5-3 million passengers annually”, Sokolov said. “However,
afterwards, it will be better to build a single terminal with account
for development, designed for at least 5 million,” he said.

Simferopol takes over air traffic control within Crimea

In 2013, passenger transportation of the Simferopol international
airport totaled 1.2 million people, 8 percent more than in 2012.
International flights, which then included flights from Russia,
accounted for the bulk of transportation.

“Last year, Russian airlines transported 425,000 passengers to Crimea
during the summer season,” Sokolov said. “We hope to increase the
passenger flow during this season to 680,000-700,000 people thanks to
current programs to subsidize air transport services.”

According to the minister, the air transportation subsidizing program,
which covers three routes from airports in the southern Russian cities
of Krasnodar, Rostov and Mineralnye Vody, will also cover Simferopol.
Five airlines have bidden for participation besides Russia’s flag
carrier Aeroflot.

European air traffic regulator suspends flights to Crimea

“We are also planning to increase the number of passengers by
300,000-320,000 people through redistribution of funds in domestic
transportation allotments and by requesting additional funds from the
Finance Ministry,” Sokolov said.

The ministry’s plans will make it possible to establish direct air
links between Simferopol and Russian cities with populations of over
500,000 people in the country’s European part and in Siberia, “roughly
up to Novosibirsk”, he explained. “As a result, some 20-30 cities will
be able to take part in the program,” the minister said.

Besides, a default airline may appear in Simferopol in line with a
proposal submitted to the Transport Ministry by the Red Wings airline,
which is ready to directly link Simferopol with 15 Russian cities.

“We are working on the issue. There is no decision yet,” Sokolov said,
adding that “serious subsidies will be required to ensure that the
airline is not operating at a loss, as the passenger flow has not been
formed here yet”.

Medvedev instructs to propose more flights in Crimea within a week

Four Russian airports, namely Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo
outside the Russian capital Moscow and Pulkovo in the northwestern
city of St. Petersburg, serve more than 5 million people annually in
the country.

Crimea’s reunification with Russia

The Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, a city with a special status on
the Crimean Peninsula, held a referendum on March 16 in which most of
their residents decided for the area to secede from Ukraine and
reunify with Russia. The admission deals with Moscow were signed on
March 18.

The developments followed a coup in Ukraine in February 2014 that
occurred after months of anti-government protests, often violent,
which started in November 2013 when the country suspended the signing
of an association agreement with the European Union in favor of closer
ties with Russia.

Security concerns caused President Viktor Yanukovich to leave Ukraine.
Amid deadly riots that involved radicals, new people were brought to
power in Kiev. The new self-proclaimed Ukrainian authorities are not
recognized by the leaders of Russia and Crimea.

Transport links with Crimea remain, says Ukrainian parliament-appointed minister

Crimea became part of the Russian Empire in 1783, when it was
conquered by Russian Empress Catherine the Great. In the Soviet Union,
Crimea used to be part of Russia until 1954, when Nikita Khrushchev,
the first secretary of the USSR’s Communist Party, transferred it to
Ukraine’s jurisdiction as a gift. With the collapse of the Soviet
Union in 1991, Crimea became part of newly independent Ukraine and
remained in that capacity until March 2014, when it joined Russia.

Now that Crimea has reunified with the Russian Federation, work to
integrate the area into the country’s infrastructure systems is
actively ongoing. A transitional period will be in place until January
1, 2015, during which the new constituent members of Russia will be
incorporated into the country’s economic, financial, credit, legal,
state power and military conscription systems. According to the
Crimean and Ukrainian statistics bodies, as of early 2014, Crimea had
a population of 1,959,000 people, and Sevastopol has a population of
384,000 people. As of late 2013, Russians accounted for 58.5 percent,
Ukrainians for 24.3 percent, Crimean Tatars for 12.1 percent,
Belarusians for 1.4 percent and Armenians for 1.1 percent of Crimea’s
population.

Syrian opposition saves Armenian hurt in clashes

World Bulletin / News Desk

A Syrian of Armenian origin was saved by Syrian opposition groups
after being wounded during intense fighting outside the northwestern
coastal city of Latakia.

The 62-year-old Armenian Syrian, Moussa Kordmisian, was struck by a
piece of shrapnel in Latakia’s Armenian-populated town of Kasab, where
heavy fighting between the Syrian army and opposition forces took
place two weeks ago.

“I was wounded in the second day of the clashes,” said Kordmisian, who
spent more than a week in the hospital recovering. “Opposition
fighters made me have the surgery and saved my life”.

Almost a fortnight ago, the opposition group seized the town after a
series of battles against the Syrian regime. The region is a strategic
place as it abuts the only border gate to Turkey controlled by the
Syrian regime and is a gateway for opposition forces to reach the
Mediterranean coast.

Kordmisian told Anadolu Agency that he had not seen opposition
fighters murdering any Armenian in the town.

An Armenian-American group alleged earlier that Turkey aided
opposition groups in capturing the town, a claim that has been denied
by Turkish officials.

ANKARA: So-called Armenian genocide draft voted by the U.S. Senate

So-called Armenian genocide draft voted by the U.S. Senate

JTW, Reyhan Güner

Armenian lobby in the U.S. presented to the U.S. Senate a draft which
demands the U.S. recognition of so-called Armenian genocide.

The draft presented by Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Chief Robert
Menendez and Republican Senator Mark Kirk who want to label the death
of Armenians in 1915 as “genocide”. Menendez claimed that “Armenian
genocide” is an undeniable reality and U.S. should absolutely
recognize it and also should convince international actors for the
recognition of genocide claims.

The draft includes the following:

-To remember and observe the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on
April 24, 2014.

-That the President should work toward an equitable, constructive,
stable, and durable Armenian-Turkish relationship that includes the
full acknowledgment by the Government of the Republic of Turkey of the
facts about the Armenian Genocide.

-That the President should ensure that the foreign policy of the
United States reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity
concerning issues related to human rights, crimes against humanity,
ethnic cleansing, and genocide documented in the United States record
relating to the Armenian Genocide.

Democrat Senators Barbara Boxer and Ed Markey are among those to pen
their names to the draft which must now be voted by the Senate.

Then, with the approval of the Democrat majority leader Harry Reid,
the draft may be brought to the attention of the Senate’s General
Assembly.

The draft which will be discussed at Foreign Affairs Committee of
Senate calls Obama for recognizing Armenian genocide and putting
effort on the development of Turkey-Armenia relations.

After the draft is approved by Foreign Affairs Committee of Senate, it
will be represented to the Senate majority leader. If the draft takes
the approval of Senate majority leader, it will be voted by General
Assembly.

Turkey, Azerbaijan gas pipeline construction to start 2014

Saturday, April 05, 2014

BAKU – The construction of a pipeline to transport natural gas through
Azerbaijan and Turkey to Europe is likely to start by the end of 2014,
Turkey’s Prime Minister said Friday.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham
Aliyev in Baku, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey’s cabinet had paved
the way for construction by nationalizing the area where the pipeline
would pass through.

Aliyev said: “We expect to open the TANAP in 2018 with my brother
Erdogan. This project will contribute to our bilateral relations to a
significant extent.”

Aliyev said that the project would also contribute to the relations of
the two states with neighboring countries.

The pipeline was announced in November 2011 at the Third Black Sea
Energy and Economic Forum in Istanbul and the two leaders signed a
binding intergovernmental agreement on the pipeline in June 2012.

The two leaders also said they discussed Azerbaijan and Armenia’s
territorial dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh. Aliyev thanks Turkey for
its support, which Erdogan reiterated, against what he claimed is an
Armenian occupation of Karabakh.

Erdogan hinted, in response to a question, that the two leaders had
talked about the movement led by U.S.-based scholar Fethullah Gulen
and its schools in Azerbaijan.

“If there is a problem in our countries which also bothers the two
countries, of course, we would surely talk on it,” said Erdogan.

“We are allies, brothers. We have covered a lot of issues. There is no
issue which we did not touch upon. If there is an issue which damages
our relations, we will surely take all necessary steps against it,”
said Aliyev.

Azerbaijan sacked the head of the Political Analysis and Information
Provision department, Elnur Aslanov, last month for alleged links to
Gulen.

First resignation with the order of the people and not the president

First resignation with the order of the people and not the president –
Arthur Aleksanyan on PM’s resignation

13:00 / 05.04.2014

Nyut.am spoke with the Karabakh war hero, retired National Security
Service General Arthur Aleksanyan [Amarasi Arthur] about the
resignation of PM Tigran Sargsyan and its consequences.

“First I congratulate all of us on this historic victory. Historic, as
for the first time in independent Armenia resignation followed the
order of the people and not the president. Finally, one of the most
important values – freedom of speech became a reality in our
independent country. As of the moment, I highly rate particularly this
as the existing tensed atmosphere was leading the situation to armed
dialogue. With this decision the president acknowledged the existence
of explosively dangerous situation in the country,” he said.

Mr Aleksanyan stressed that the country is bankrupt thanks to the
former banker PM. “The whole nation is under the loan because of the
PM. The criminal system created by him in Armenia ruined homes.
Instead of laws, purchasing, tenders, kick-backs, interest rates are
acting in our country. But again all these tenders are for their
brothers and no one can win them but only they,” he stressed.

– Which is the way out? Where is our salvation?

I am convinced that the country’s salvation is in the creation of
military-industrial ministry which will first result in opening new
jobs and in anti-exportation of sums.
This all will ensure atmosphere of justice in our country. Only thanks
to the employment of the people, ensuring bread and water for them it
is possible to ensure their future and high pensions. It is necessary
to put an end to this short-term tenders and purchases and decrease
the interst rates of banks.

– Mr Aleksanyan, who do you see in the post of the PM?

– PM must first of all be strong, willing person, who using national
projects will promote the development of country’s economy, will save
the people, raise president’s rating as the latter is the Supreme
Commander of the Armed Forces – the guarantor of security of the all
Armenians.
