Turkey eyes Karabakh step from Armenia to open ways

ANKARA – Hürriyet Daily News
by Serkan DemirtaÅ?

Turkey offers for Armenia to take part in its regional transportation
project linking Europe to Asia, if there are concrete developments in
solving the thorny issue of Nagorno-Karabakh with Baku

Turkey has proposed that Armenia take part in its comprehensive
regional transportation project linking Europe to Asia, if there are
concrete developments in solving Nagorno-Karabakh dispute with
Azerbaijan, reflecting a political will to build a win-win situation
for all countries in the southern Caucasus in a post-conflict era.

`We are trying to activate the OSCE Minsk Group for the solution of
the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute. We introduced the Integrated
Transportation Corridors Project to the Minsk Group in November 2012.
This project is to be implemented in peace time and particularly after
Armenia moves on with regard to its occupation in seven regions
bordering Nagorno-Karabakh,’ Turkish diplomatic sources told the
Hürriyet Daily News recently. `We are proposing full normalization of
ties between Turkey-Armenia and Armenia-Azerbaijan.’

Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh and seven
regions bordering the territory since early 1990s stands as the main
hurdle in front of regional stability and prosperity. Turkey supported
Azerbaijan and sealed its borders with Armenia in a move further
fueling already strained ties over the latter’s campaign to have the
1915 killings of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire
recognized as genocide by the international community.

Turkey’s recent move to reconcile with Armenia was nixed due to strong
Azeri reaction in 2010, which caused suspension of the ratification of
two key protocols for establishing diplomatic relations and opening
the sealed borders. Turkey has since re-focused on seeking ways to
activate the almost futile Minsk Group, under the Organization of
Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), for pushing Azerbaijan and
Armenia to agree on a peace plan.

Within this framework, Turkey introduced its Integrated Transportation
Corridors Project to the Minsk Group on Nov. 8, 2012 during a meeting
in Vienna attended by three co-chair countries, France, Russia and the
United States. `It has received a positive response from all Minsk
Group countries,’ sources told the Daily News. `We have made clear to
them this project is aiming at creating a peace perspective to the
benefit of all relevant parties.’

Railways, roads, cities

The proposed transportation project has two phases. On the one hand it
is focused on linking Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia
Federation through fixing unused railways and building new ones. Along
with the Kars-Tbilisi-Baku railway project that is expected to be
concluded by the end of this year, the Turkey-Armenia railway may be
re-opened after just a minor rehabilitation. Parallel to the railway,
a new modern highway is also being considered to further increase
trade and human traffic between the two countries.

`Obviously, we are also planning to build new logistical centers and
residential areas, as well as mass housing projects along these routes
to create a new regional hub,’ sources stressed. `The only objective
of this project is to create an economic pick-up in the region, for
the advantage of all countries and for the prosperity of their
people.’

In consideration with the economic prospects and strategic importance
that the outer region of the Caucasus offers, Turkey’s project also
addresses the need to link regional countries to Europe and Asia. A
transportation line between London and Beijing will soon be possible
with the conclusion of the Marmaray Project and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars
railroad, while normalization of the political situation in the region
would also allow Armenia to join this growing strategic picture,
sources close to the project claim.

Azerbaijan is informed about the project

Known for its suspicion of potential Turkish-Armenian reconciliation,
Azerbaijan has been informed about the content of the project by
Turkey. `They know what we want. We have made clear them that this is
a project that will be implemented only after Armenia moves towards
peace,’ Azerbaijani sources stressed.

Armenia, however, has so far remained cool to Turkey’s project, and
has not conveyed an official reaction through the Minsk Group.

After President Serzh Sargisyan’s victory in last week’s elections,
Turkey does not expect an immediate change in Armenia’s policies on
the Nagorno-Karabakh problem. `We don’t anticipate a substantial
change in their policies until 2015,’ Turkish sources stated.

Armenia and its organized diaspora communities are actively
campaigning for an overall recognition of 1915 killings as genocide
across the world in the centennial commemoration of the incident.

What US and Britain did to Iraq is nothing short of state terrorism

By Linda S. Heard | Special to Gulf News

It’s been almost 10 years since the US and Britain unleashed ‘Shock and
Awe’ on the Iraqi capital Baghdad ostensibly to punish a rogue dictator
for hoarding weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in non-compliance with
binding UN Security Council resolutions. In reality, Saddam Hussain
had shut down his nuclear programme and destroyed Iraq’s chemical
and biological weapons more than a decade earlier.

UN weapons inspectors were almost certain of this fact and were on the
point of giving Iraq a clean bill of health until they were leant-on
by Uncle Sam. Indeed, the man who had supervised Iraq’s WMD programme
for a decade Saddam’s son-in-law Hussain Kamal confirmed as much to
CIA intelligence officers and UN officials following his defection
to Jordan in 1995.

What was done to Iraq was nothing short of state terrorism beginning
with 10 years of crippling sanctions that brought Iraq to its knees
and were believed to have been responsible for the deaths of up to
500,000 children who died from malnutrition, lack of medicine and
disease from polluted water supplies.

Rather than heed growing international calls to lift those sanctions,
George W. Bush and his neoconservative band chose war which they and
their British cohort Prime Minister Tony Blair then sold to gullible
Western populations on lies too numerous to list. They were aided by
a complicit right-wing media with Rupert Murdoch leading the charge,
according to the diaries of Blair’s former spin doctor Alastair
Campbell.

Article continues below

Blair was aware that the war would be illegal in the absence of
an explicit UN resolution, as his legal advisor attorney general
Lord Goldsmith had determined, but he went ahead regardless even as
millions of anti-war protestors thronged London’s streets. He didn’t
hesitate to sign-off on an intelligence dossier for public consumption
falsely claiming that Iraq could deploy WMD against British interests
within 45 minutes of receiving the order to do so — and another
containing tracts from a student’s thesis published on the internet,
typos and all.

Credible insiders who dared to challenge such nonsense such as weapons
expert Dr David Kelly, who challenged the 45-minute claim, Ambassador
Joseph Wilson, who refuted Bush’s allegation that Iraq had sought to
purchase uranium from Niger, and British translator Katherine Gunn
who disclosed that the US was spying on UN Security Council members,
were discredited.

Kelly was found dead in suspicious circumstances; Wilson’s wife Valerie
Plame was exposed as a CIA agent by a US government media lackey. Gunn
was arrested for breaching the Official Secrets Act and sacked.

One of the most respected figures in America Colin Powell signed
the death of his own career when he spouted trumped up allegations
against Iraq in the UN, a presentation he was to bitterly regret,
calling it a painful blot on his record.

World’s greatest con

In short, the war was one of the world’s greatest cons. It had nothing
to do with Iraq’s WMD or the removal of a dictator; it was part of a
greater neoconservative plan to ensure America’s global domination
as General Wesley Clark confirmed in his book Winning Modern Wars:
Iraq, Terrorism and the American Empire.

“As I went back through the Pentagon in November 2001, one of the
senior military staff officers had time for a chat. Yes, we were still
on track for going against Iraq, he said. But there was more. This
was being discussed as part of a five-year campaign plan, he said,
and there were a total of seven countries, beginning with Iraq,
then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Somalia and Sudan.”

Up to a million Iraqis lost their lives as a result of the war
and subsequent invasion and occupation; according to the respected
journal The Lancet, over 600,000 had been killed as of July 2006,
not to mention thousands of US and coalition military personnel.

Former World Bank chief economist Joseph Stiglitz announced that
the war impacted the US economy to the tune of $3 trillion (Dh11.1
trillion). And for what! The only beneficiaries of this willful
blunder chiefly perpetrated by Bush and Blair have been Iran that
holds sway over the Shiite-dominated Nouri Al Maliki government and
various terror organisations that have used western crimes against
Iraq as a recruitment call. Today, Iraq is poised on the brink of
all out civil war.

The Conservative MP and Minister without Portfolio Kenneth Clarke
recently told the BBC that Iraq was “the most disastrous foreign
policy decision of my lifetime … worse than Suez”. You don’t need
Einstein’s IQ to realise that, but the Iraq Inquiry chaired by Sir
John Chilcot, and set up in 2009, has failed in its mission.

It’s been characterised by the British prime minister as “an
establishment stitch-up”.

Where’s the public anger? American newspapers are running stories
about the death of Bush’s pooch Barney and his penchant for painting
while a tanned Blair has been busy accepting a Polish Business Leaders’
Award and pontificating on David Cameron’s plan to hold a referendum
on Britain’s continued EU membership.

The deadly duo should be sharing a cell in The Hague awaiting trial
for war crimes, but as we see time and time again, victors’ justice
translates to no justice at all.

Why Did Gyumri "Breakdown" Serzh Sargsyan Or Who Invited Vardan Ghuk

WHY DID GYUMRI “BREAKDOWN” SERZH SARGSYAN OR WHO INVITED VARDAN GHUKASYAN TO A RESTAURANT?

2013-02-22 22:54:44

In connection with the defeat of President Serzh Sargsyan in Gyumri,
exaggerated interesting versions began, one of them, which is quite
logical and reasonable, we will try to present below.

And so, regardless of the fact that all responsible, both the
Governor Ashot Giziryan (today’s governors function is to organize the
elections), and the deputy Ashot Agababyan, and Mayor Samvel Balasanyan
have their share of guilt, as they could not orient the members of
“Prosperous Armenia” as he oriented himself, there is another point,
which in those days was something out of the spotlight.

As you know, a few years ago in Gyumri established and because of
permissiveness and impunity for years came to an enormous size, and
terrors upon Gyumri’s ex-mayor Vardan Ghukasyan. Ghukasyan took over
the whole city, and if someone dared to do something evil, “lord”,
was honored accordingly. The result is the change in psychological
image of Gyumri residents.

In any case, the ice was broken, and on the eve of the election
campaign in Gyumri, however, there was a wave of discontent, however,
it was not exactly 70 percent, and at this point those, just voting
for Raffi Hovannisiyn had no privilege. In Gyumri they began to believe
that was the end of Vardan Ghukasyan, and they finally became free.

President arrives in Gyumri. At this time happens something that
causes Raffi Hovannisyan’s victory in the elections. After meetings
elite of RPA goes to the restaurant. Only notable episode was the
fact that the incumbent Mayor of Gyumri Samvel Balasanyan put in
place beneath his dignity to which he reacted and left the restaurant.

That’s a fact, that it had been planned and pursued certain goals.

Besides that on this da yanother remarkable phenomenon occured
in the restaurant, which is likely to play a decisive role on the
election day.

Vardan Ghukasyan was also invited and was present till the end in
the markes restaurant. What the ex-mayor did not manage to do, the
incumbent mayor manages. Based on the results of the election, it was
this little thing that creates a significant change in the orientation
of the voters. What escapes from the attention of journalists, does
not escape frim Gyumri residents’ quick eye.

Who invited Vardan Ghukasyan to the restaurant? What did the
invitation mean? The former mayor is respected by the President of
the country? What did Serzh Sargsyan want to make it clear for the
residents of Gyumri before the election, humiliating the incumbent
mayor and raising the ex-mayor, it is difficult to say. But the
fact that this operation was specifically organized and have had a
particular impact on the question of orientation of Gyumri residents,
making it clear that after the elections they will still not change,
as they depended on Vardan Ghukasyan, they would remain in tha same
way, is a fact which left his indelible mark on the election results.

Serzh Sargsyan-16 000, Raffi Hovannisyan-41 000.

Raffi Hovannisian: Armenian Cities Will Rise For Their Victory

RAFFI HOVANNISIAN: ARMENIAN CITIES WILL RISE FOR THEIR VICTORY

February 22, 2013 – 20:22 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Heritage party leader revealed the details of his
meeting with incumbent president Serzh Sargsyan.

As Raffi Hovannisian stated during a February 22 rally at Liberty
Square, Sargsyan has been offered 3 options: accept the people’s
victory, hold new polls or elect a new parliament. All of the
suggestions were declined.

Hovannisian gave the following reply, “If you’re not ready and
don’t have the strength or ability to accept the people’s victory,
being with people is the only thing I can do. The soldiers have to
protect the border, but if they’re ordered to stand in our way, the
commander, the policeman that would execute this illegal order will
have to answer to people. We’ll continue the struggle and we’ll be
persistent in our efforts.”

As Hovhannisian further noted other Armenian people will also join the
struggle. “Tomorrow we’ll travel to Ashtarak, Vanadzor, Gyumri. We’ll
return to Yerevan on Sunday and gather here. I suggest Yerevan Mayor
sanction the rally art Liberty Square, because here is where Armenian
people will gather,” he said.

Armenian teachers experience Pingree

Armenian teachers experience Pingree

by By Jennie Oemig

Hamilton-Wenham – In an exchange with an Armenian High School, two
teachers from the Republic were able to visit and experience what the
Pingree School has to offer; in turn, two Pingree teachers will be
traveling to Armenia next month.

Ruzanna Navasardyan and Eleanora Ananyan, teachers at School No. 114
in Yerevan, Armenia, spent 12 days in South Hamilton learning the ins
and outs of the Pingree School.

“High school is new for us,” Navasardyan said. “It’s been only 10
years that we’ve had high school.”

Navasardyan explained that before high schools came to be in Armenia,
students only attended secondary schools before going to university.

One thing Navasardyan said is different in Armenia is that students
start learning foreign languages in first grade, studying Armenian,
Russian and English.

In fourth grade, students begin studying an additional language –
either French, German or Italian – for a total of four.

In addition to language, grammar and literature, Navasardyan said
students study English history and traditions on a daily basis, which
will likely delight the Pingree teachers on their visit.

“They will find we know a lot about your history, traditions and
customs,” she said, adding that Armenians also celebrate American
holidays.

Navasardyan also noted that, unlike Pingree, there aren’t art and
engineering classes at School No. 114.

When they return to Armenia, Navasardyan and Ananyan will have a
meeting with authorities at their school to share their experiences
and observations.

“It was nice to come here,” Navasardyan said. “I’ve never been to an
English-speaking country before.”

Though the visit to Pingree was the first teacher exchange with a
private school, Navasardyan said there was a student exchange 15 years
ago with Watertown.

“They study for a year in America, then come back and study at
university,” she said, adding that she hopes there will be a similar
student exchange in the near future.

Navasardyan said she was extremely thankful for the accommodations
provided to her and Ananyan during their visit.

Ananyan said she had a wonderful time in the Commonwealth.

“The exchange program has taught us a lot,” she said. “Pingree is so
nice. There are many interesting people … they’re so educated and
intelligent.”

Ananyan also noted that Pingree is able to offer its students a great education.

“They have all the conveniences,” she said. “The rooms are
well-equipped, teachers have good qualifications … I think the
students are very satisfied.”

Overall, Ananyan said she thought the educational opportunities for
students were much better at Pingree.

The visit also cleared up a lot of predetermined notions Ananyan said
she had about the United States.

“I thought it was a very dangerous country,” she said. “But I have
changed my opinion. Even people here don’t lock their doors … I’d like
to come again.”
