Sports: Armenia’s "Raging Bull" Wants To Put Down The Boxing Gloves

ARMENIA’S “RAGING BULL” WANTS TO PUT DOWN THE BOXING GLOVES AND HEAD TO MMA: FAN’S LOOK

USA TODAY announced on December 1st that Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1) is
planning on switching over to MMA. Whether he is ready for this or
not is hard to say, but he will need to gain a few pounds. Currently
fighting at 125, he would have to gain a few pounds to be at the top
of MMA’s bantam weight class of 135. Not that this should be a problem,
plenty of other guys fight lighter and faster.

With a monstrous record like his, he shouldn’t have too much of a
problem switching to MMA. A few months to a year of ground work,
and he might be UFC’s next Junior “Cigano” dos Santos(14-1-0). Dos
Santos popped up on UFC’s scene back in 2008, and since then has been
wrecking peoples days in the octagon. With a UFC record of 9-0, all
but two of which have been wins by punches, other than two unanimous
decisions, it is fairly undeniable that boxers have a chance.

According to USA TODAY, Darchinyan is being managed by the same guy
who boosted Kimbo Slice’s image. Hopefully Darchinyan will stay in
longer than Kimbo did, which shouldn’t be hard with Dana White not
hating him. White made no mystery of his lack of desire to have Kimbo
in his cages.

Junior on the other hand has brought him a fair amount of money. And
Darchinyan is coming in with no lack of followers. Will this lead to a
boost in MMA viewings? Maybe a larger cross over of boxers and boxing
fans? The best thing that could come out of this would be Dana White
signing Darchinyan on and giving us a 125 weight class. Either way,
everyone needs to look out for the “Raging Bull”. With his horns
set on MMA, the punches are coming to the bantam weight division,
and they will be coming with a vengeance.

New York Has Its Own Kardashian, And She’s Selling $1k Fur Coats

NEW YORK HAS ITS OWN KARDASHIAN, AND SHE’S SELLING $1K FUR COATS

New York Observer

Dec 2 2011

The first thing you notice about Janetta Kardashian is that her name
does not begin with the letter K. And the fact that she calls New
York home-not in the way Kim Kardashian called the Gansevoort her
home for a short while-but actually her home-home, where she owns a
thrift shop in Midtown called NY Vintage Club.

What kind of Kardashian is she?

The answer is that she’s not…or not at least part of the West-Coast
reality TV family. Yet the second-hand mink dresses and evening gown
purveyor tells DNAInfo, “All Kardashians are related.” And she’s
not being metaphorical. Ms. Kardashian (of the Russian-Armenian
Kardashians, who migrated here as a young woman and “saw the lights,”
“never went back”) has family from the same region of Southern Armenia
that the reality show family descends from. She had even met Robert
Kardashian at the Mandarin Hotel during the days of Princess Diana’s
death, after a mix-up with the names had the famous lawyer calling
her room.

“They keep telling me my wife is here, and I know she’s not,” Ms.

Kardashian recalls for The New York Observer. “We ended up meeting
for lunch, and he told me that I remind him of his daughters.”

Ms. Kardashian also told us that sharing a name with the famous family
does have its benefits: “I’m always upgraded on planes, and when I
give my name for restaurant reservations, I’m always given a great
table in the back.” She’s even had television studios call her for
interviews, thinking she was related to Kim.

But Ms. Kardashian is famous in her own (New York) right: she caters
to the high-end celebrities that Khloe, Kim, and Kourtney rub arms
with on a daily basis. (She also bears an uncanny resemblance to an
older Kourtney.) She’s sold clothes to Yoko and the Olsen twins and
owns a jacket that was once worn by Cher.

“I wanted one-of-a-kind pieces. I wanted not to follow fashion. I
wanted to create style,” she told Mary Johnson.

When we asked her what she though of DASH, she told us “You know,
I’ve never been there. But I keep trying to make it downtown.”

Armenia

YEREVAN. – The main rehearsal of Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2011
will get underway, on Friday at 7 p.m. local time, at Karen Demirchyan
Sports and Concert Complex of Armenian capital Yerevan. Accredited
journalists will also be able to follow the rehearsal.

The stage, which is prepared with European quality and Armenian
traditions and spirit, is ready. Armenian cultural elements will also
be demonstrated throughout the show.

In the words of event organizers, the participants’ active and carefree
faces make this difficult and necessary work all the more pleasant.

“We had a lot of time to see Armenia. I am especially impressed by
the Mother Armenia statue and its history,” Macedonia’s representative
Dorijan Dlaka said, with great enthusiasm. And Belgium’s representative
Femke noted that she particularly liked the delicious Armenian cuisine
and the rich museums.

So, the technical equipment, which was tested numerous times, is
ready. The stage, which symbolizes the solid Armenian mountains,
is ready. It is ready to prove to small countries, like us, that
impossible is a mere opinion.

From Armenian History To Black-American History: Elizabeth Cann Kamb

FROM ARMENIAN HISTORY TO BLACK-AMERICAN HISTORY: ELIZABETH CANN KAMBOURIAN

Mirror-Spectator Staff

RICHMOND, Va. – Elizabeth Cann Kambourian was a student at Virginia
Commonwealth University in Richmond, majoring in history when she
decided to write her honors thesis on the first Republic of Armenia.

Many years later she became an expert in an important American slave
rebellion in Richmond. In both cases, curiosity about people and
things around her stimulated her research.

Kambourian was 28 when she went to college, having already gotten
married and formed a family. She was working in a jewelry store
run by her husband’s family, the Kambourians, and would walk to
classes from work. Kambourian explained that her husband’s family
history was interesting. The Kambourians were a prosperous family
in Erzerum. As a result of a quarrel there, one young son, Manuel,
was sent abroad in the early 1880s, initially to France. He then
came to New York and became a jeweler like his father. After some
business disagreements, he immigrated to Richmond and started a rug
business. He had three sons, two of whom took over the rug business –
which still is flourishing today in the hands of a fourth generation
Kambourian, and the youngest of whom went into the jewelry field.

One relative, Dikran Najarian, married to a Kambourian, was a Tashnag,
or member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation. He went back
to the Ottoman Empire in the beginning of the 20th century and got
arrested and was executed. His final writing from jail is preserved
by the family.

As Kambourian took an interest in the family’s history, one of
her husband’s uncles gave her various family documents, including
photographs, Ottoman travel papers and a work permit for the
aforementioned Najarian.

Kambourian wrote her undergraduate thesis on the first Republic of
Armenia but gave background dating back to 1870. Her professor was
able to give her good guidance and she used contemporary French and
English newspapers among her sources.

Ironically, as Kambourian pointed out, while in college “I skipped
American history altogether, but ended up getting involved in it in
the end.” It turned out that the house that she and her family bought
in 1974 played a key role in this. The old lady who sold the house
gave her a title search done in 1918, which traced the plot of land
back to 1745, when it was part of a much larger tract. Eventually,
in the late 1980s, out of curiosity Kambourian went to the Henrico
County records and found a plan of a plantation, Quincy Plantation,
which included her own plot.

She said, “I knew already that a slave rebellion had taken place in
this neighborhood. I thought that surely my house would have had
participants since it was adjacent to two other plantations where
slaves participated. And I did find a slave, George Smith, who was
involved. He was a conjurer. It was fascinating.”

The slave rebellion, called the Gabriel rebellion after its leader,
a blacksmith, was planned for the summer of 1800. Kambourian said,
“The rebels were well educated and belonged to lax owners – that
is, they were allowed to roam about. They did not have it that bad
[compared to other slaves]. They could, however, see during their
trips for business into Richmond how deprived they really were. Death
or liberty was their banner.” They had wide-ranging contacts with
other slaves and hoped their act would spark a broader rebellion.

The rebellion failed, due to betrayal by fellow slaves, as well as
torrential rains. Virginia’s governor was then James Monroe, the future
fifth president of the United States. After he suppressed the rebellion
by force, he attempted to cover it up, fearing it could cause political
trouble. It was a presidential election year with another Virginian,
Thomas Jefferson, vying for the highest position in the American
government. However, Monroe was unsuccessful and newspapers in the
North did write about the event. The longterm consequences included the
strengthening of restrictions on the rights and activities of slaves.

Kambourian’s research led her to locate the gallows where Gabriel
was hung, along with his fellow conspirators. They were immediately
buried nearby in a site which had been turned into a parking lot on
Broad Street. This is the African-American or Negro Burial Ground.

Kambourian tried to get people to listen to the results of her research
in the 1990s, but she found that nobody was interested until around
2000. She gave a key presentation then in the Black History Museum
and Cultural

Center of Virginia in Richmond, and an organization called the
Defenders for Freedom, Justice and Equality soon began to cite her
discoveries. A struggle was waged to memorialize the burial ground,
and it no longer is used as a parking site.

In 2002, Gabriel’s death was commemorated by a resolution of the City
of Richmond, and in 2006 Gov. Tim Kaine informally pardoned Gabriel
and his collaborators in recognition of his struggle to end slavery
and promote equality for all people.

While Kambourian was reading in the State Library in the 1980s and
1990s, she noticed that African-Americans were always coming in to
ask about how to start work on their family genealogies, and the
librarians would tell them to look at the Freedmen’s Bureau records.

She eventually decided to write a book making this raw information
more accessible, and in 1997 published The Freedmen’s Bureau in
Virginia. This volume provides a list of former slaves and freedmen who
received food and medical aid from the Virginia Freedmen’s Bureau, with
maps and whatever personal information was available in the records.

At present Kambourian is preparing a book on the Gabriel rebellion.

She has found interesting personal motivations for Gabriel and a
number of the chief conspirators which may have led them to rebel
despite the relatively good circumstances of their lives as slaves.

For example, Gabriel, a handsome young man, may have had his front
teeth knocked out and have been humiliated and disfigured by his
master, though they were of the same age and friends of sorts.

Some Coffee Producers In Armenia Fined For Unconscientious Competiti

SOME COFFEE PRODUCERS IN ARMENIA FINED FOR UNCONSCIENTIOUS COMPETITION

arminfo
Friday, December 2, 18:17

Some coffee producers in Armenia mislead consumers and sell suspicious
products, says the conclusion of the Armenian Commission for the
Protection of Economic Competition, which carried out laboratory
analysis of a number well-known coffee brands in the republic.

The Commission says that the following brands were analyzed: “Fero”
(Fero), “Valletta” (Premier), “Byurakn” (Pyramid Elite), “Vans Group”
(Star), “Askolio” (Marsel). These companies deceive the consumers
and sell coffee, which does not comply with the content indicated
on the package. These products contain starch-containing substances,
for instance, grain, barley or acorn.

The companies had a serious advantage as compared to the conscientious
competitors, as thanks to cheap additives, they can sell the coffee at
incomparably low prices. The Commission has qualified the producers
actions as an unconscientious competition and has imposed 5 mln AMD
penalty on each of them.

The Commission also says that low quality coffee with low content of
caffeine is sold in the republic. In Russia and European countries this
problem is resolved, and the producers are to indicate the caffeine
content on the package. In Armenia this problem is still unresolved,
and some producers demonstrate unconscientious competition, misleading
the consumers.

“Positive developments were registered in country’s economy this year,”
Armenian Minister of Economy Tigran Davtyan said today.

“We can say that it was a successful year from the economic point of
view,” the Minister said, noting that 5% GDP growth is expected by
the end of the year.

“We provide growth thanks to the real sector, first of all the
industry,” the Minister said. “I think 12-13 percent industrial
growth will be registered this year. Besides, 20-27 percent growth
is expected in the sphere of export. The volume of investments has
also grown, and the growth of tourism reached 13%,” the Minister said.

The Armenian Minister of Economy Tigran Davtyan and UN Resident
Coordinator in Armenia Dafina Gercheva signed a memorandum of
understanding today.

Under the document the UNDP will provide assistance in the training
of the staff of the Economy Ministry.

The employees of the Ministry will be trained in European structures
Tigran Davtyan said stressing that the Ministry needs skilled employees
to be engaged in talks and cooperation with international agencies.

UN Resident Coordinator Dafina Gercheva said “capacity development is
a process that never ends. To implement proper reforms, it’s necessary
to have strong resources and we’ll start the implementation of the
program after the signing of this memorandum. I hope this will be
exemplary for the other Ministries,” she underscored.

Buildings Constructed In Armenia Are ‘Deadly’: Seismologists, Archit

BUILDINGS CONSTRUCTED IN ARMENIA ARE ‘DEADLY’: SEISMOLOGISTS, ARCHITECTS RAISE ALARM ON SEISMIC SAFETY

epress.am
12.02.2011

An earthquake is a natural disaster which is impossible to predict,
but to try to predict and to take precautionary measures to avoid human
and material loses is possible. Speaking about seismic safety in the
region at a press conference in Yerevan today were deputy chair of the
National Survey of Seismic Protection of the RA Ministry of Emergency
Situations Ashkhen Tovmasyan, seismologist Vladimir Balasanyan and
Union of Architects of Armenia chair Mkrtich Minasyan.

“One of the main goals of ‘seismic zoning’ (a branch of earthquake
studies) is to give reliable assessments of the maximum possible
seismic hazard before starting construction work on any site, but
regretfully, I have to say that the density of buildings in the capital
has reached such monstrous heights that no rules are being considered,”
said seismologist Vladimir Balasanyan.

Ashkhen Tovmasyan, in turn, believes that being protected against
earthquake has to become a nationwide issue.

“Videos taken during the earthquake in Japan clearly show that even in
those cases when the building is rocking, instead of people running
outside, they try to stay calm and they even manage to gather the
items that have fallen on the floor. But here, we don’t yet have
this rule of conduct – we still have much to do. Considering the
consequences of and incurred losses from the 1988 earthquake, as a
result of observing international practice since 1991, we’ve been able
to teach people to protect themselves from earthquakes. Unfortunately,
the efficiency and effectiveness of education become clear only after
strong earthquakes. Only then do omissions emerge,” she said.

Mkrtich Minasyan is convinced that being in the most seismically
active zone in the region requires much attention to be paid to
observing urban development norms.

Unlike in Japan, the buildings in Armenia are deadly, and to come
out of a building in time doesn’t suppose that a person can consider
himself saved.

“Yerevan is located within two seismic corridors – Garni and Ararat.

Realizing the level of danger, we continue to construct buildings
in excessive density, where there are no safeguards set aside for
evacuating people in different emergency situations. Hence, in
comparing [Armenia] with Japan we have to consider the fact that
their buildings, when they collapse, maintain their construction,
but in the case of our buildings, the picture is different – even
if the building doesn’t collapse, the sections of the building that
fall from the building might cause greater damage to people than the
earthquake itself,” said Minasyan.

The speakers were convinced that since building practices still don’t
observe the conditions defined by law, there will be huge losses in
any earthquake that strikes Armenia.

by government on Prosperous Armenia coalition party given recent
arrests of several party members.

“These arrests have no political background,” Zohrabyan said adding
