SYRIAN ARMENIANS REQUEST STATUS AND CITIZENSHIP FROM PASSPORT AND VISA DEPARTMENT

YEREVAN

YEREVAN, JUNE 4, ARMENPRESS: As a consequence of the crisis of home
politics in Syria, no activeness of applications is registered in
Armenia’s migration agencies. Ruzanna Petrosyan, chief specialist
of the asylum affairs department of the State Migration Service told
Armenpress that the latest application from Syria was received in May.

“During 2012 we have received 4 applications, 3 of which belong to
members of the same family. Their applications have been answered,
and one of them has already received an asylum,” said Mrs Petrosyan.

Hovhannes Kocharyan, head of the Passport and Visa Department of the
Police, noted that they receive numerous applications from Syria on
getting a status and citizenship. But he found it difficult to point
out data, noting that in contrast to 2011, this year the number of
those wishing to obtain citizenship has grown.

Armenian Expert: Armed Incident Linked To Clinton’s Visit

ARMENIAN EXPERT: ARMED INCIDENT LINKED TO CLINTON’S VISIT

tert.am
04.06.12

The armed incident in Tavush region is directly linked to US Secretary
of State Hillary Clinton’s scheduled visit to Armenia, according to
Artsrun Hovhannisyan, a military expert.

Speaking to Tert.am, Hovhannisyan said that Azerbaijan wanted in
that manner to prove that it is ready to resort to armed operations
to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“Especially now that the west turned the spotlight on the Aliyev clan,
Azerbaijan is trying to distract attention by inciting incidents on the
borderline,” he said, adding that such efforts aim to counterbalance
BBC’s recent film about the country.

Hovhannisyan believes that Azerbaijan seeks to prove to the world
that it faces no hardships domestically, with the unresolved
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict being its only problem.

Asked what preference the US Secretary would give to the Karabakh
conflict in the course of her coming tour, he said: “The maintenance
of the status quo in Karabakh is more than ever a strategic issue
for Karabakh. The west is facing now so many problems, that a trivial
issue like Karabakh is not of primary importance for it, to say the
least. But through its control over the peace process, the West has
hinted numerously that it leaves the solution to Moscow.”

Vladimir Zakharov: In South Caucasus Hillary Clinton Is To Study Out

VLADIMIR ZAKHAROV: IN SOUTH CAUCASUS HILLARY CLINTON IS TO STUDY OUT SERIOUS ISSUES THAT EVEN CANNOT BE PUT IN CHARGE OF ENVOYS
by David Stepanyan

Interview with Director of the Institute of Political Studies of the
Black Sea and Caspian region Vladimir Zakharov

U.S. Secretary of Hillary Clinton is visiting Armenia on June 4.

Let’s talk of the goals of her visit in the context of the situation
in Syria and Iran.

The visit of the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the South
Caucasus is a significant event. She is not traveling to the region
just on a fact-finding visit. She is to study out serious issues that
cannot even be put in charge of envoys to avoid publicity. WikiLeaks
cables showed that there is noting in the world that remains in
secrecy forever. Secrets come to light ahead of time spoiling many
arrangements. That is why Madam Clinton’s talks will be vis-a-vis.

Even if one of the presidents is not good at English, the translator
will be from the USA. Afterwards mass media will be provided with
quite different information on the given negotiations. Fairy tales
will occur in the press while the topic of the negotiations will
remain a deep secret. One of the key topics on agenda of Clinton’s
meetings with the three countries’ presidents will be the stance of the
three countries in the region on the upcoming war of the USA against
Iran, though it was reported beforehand that the given issue may be
discussed slightly. There are many analysts in Russia and Armenia
who cast doubt on possibility of such war. However, they are either
incompetent people or those who work for foreign forces against Iran
and Russia, those who openly disseminate lie.

The USA has already set the approximate date of launching aggression.

The USA will probably use others, at least Israel, to do that.

Provocation with murder of civilians in Khula by Saudi onhangers
of America, the following breach of diplomatic relations with the
key countries in the West before studying out the actual situation,
all this shows that attack on Syria is finally decided. It will be
made by a coalition of Western countries like it happened in Lybia,
not just by one country. Liquidation Asad’s ‘regime’ is extremely
necessary for the West in order to avoid an adequate Iranian response
by means of Syria in case Israel launches war against Iran. Asad has
Russian and Iranian weapons, which will allow making a severe blow
on Israel and it is not a secret. Therefore, the USA that uses Israel
against Iran has suddenly began to worry. Chilton has already declared
in Oslo that she is concerned over reports on regular delivery of
Russian weapons to Syria. In this light, Clinton will, undoubtedly,
discuss Armenia’s attitude towards the Syrian problem with President
of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan. Cooperation of Russia and Armenia, and
first of all, in the military sphere, will be the key topic of the
meeting. Madam Clinton is very likely to demand liquidation of the
Russian military base in Gyumri.

What about the visit to Georgia and Azerbaijan?

Clinton will probably express desire to meet with the opposition in
Georgia and Azerbaijan. It is not known yet if she will be allowed
to do that or not. They may organize meetings with a group of
oppositionists with certain pro-governmental persons among them. All
this is, however, a scenario behind the scenes. Such steps are taken
to keep USA’s image in the fight for false values which they call
‘democratic.’

War of the West against Iran is what the meetings with the leaders will
be focused on. Unlike Mikhail Sahakashvili and even Ilham Aliyev,
who has already taken the U.S. path and will soon declare that
Azerbaijan is ready to join NATO, USA has still certain problems
with Armenia. I do not even suppose what arguments Madam Clinton
will use to persuade or even demand Serzh Sargsyan to support the
USA in the aggression against Iran, but I think that she has prepared
quite tangible facts. Armenia’s neutral stance will not be in favor
of America. In the given situation the responsibility will fully lay
on your president. I will not answer on behalf of Mr. Sargsyan if he
will manage to insist on neutrality in the upcoming nightmare, this
is how I imagine the future war that will become a terrible disaster
for the entire world, and not only the South Caucasus. Anyway, the
upcoming meeting will be uneasy for him.

Do you think that the Karabakh conflict may turn into a serious
argument in the hands of the USA?

It has been reported already that Clinton will touch upon that issue.

She may persuade Serzh Sargsyan to go on some concessions. I hope
will not do that, however. Karabakh, specifically the territory of
Karabakh, is extremely necessary for the USA in the upcoming war
against Iran. After Ahmadinejad’s decisive statements addressed to
the leaderships of Georgia and Azerbaijan in 2010 and repeatedly made
afterwards, the USA has decided to set aside Azerbaijan. Ahmadinejad
warned Georgia and Azerbaijan that they will receive an adequate
blow if a single military aircraft flies over Iran. There is already
significant number of U.S. militaries in Azerbaijan and a huge quantity
of arms. I’d risk suppose the following scenario of developments:
if Baku unleashes large-scale war against Karabakh, it will mean that
war against Iran will start soon after. USA will deploy the so-called
‘peacemakers’ in Karabakh without any mandate, especially that they
have already been concentrated in Georgia and Azerbaijan. It will
take a couple of hours to deploy them in Karabakh.

It will be done under the pretext of stopping the war. However, the
USA needs the “peacemakers” to deploy its military contingents on the
territory of Nagorno Karabakh Republic, the closest neighbor to Iran.

That is, the negotiations of the U.S. Secretary of State will be
around Iran…

Yes, of course. I am surprised whether the USA does not understand
that the war will involve not only the neighbor states. In America
they think that they are too far from the place of future tragic
incidents, but Iran will get them, anyway. It is strange that the
neighbor states hope they will avoid war. Neither Azerbaijan nor
Georgia will avoid it. Internet is flooded with statements by Western
politicians who alarm of the necessity of punishing the obstinate
country Iran. Georgia does not conceal that it has opened a big number
of hospitals in its territory for future wounded soldiers of USA. The
runway under pretence of Tbilisi-Kutaisi autobahn with the necessary
infrastructures was put into service in late 2011. The situation is
getting out of control. Russia hardly manages to insist on peaceful
resolution of the Iranian conflict. A well-organized hysteria may
lead to a hasty attempt to attack Iran at any moment, which will
result in destabilization in a large region that will affect Armenia,
Russia and many other countries.

Syria, Iran, what is Russia’s place in the USA’s conception?

America has been recently creating discontent with the Russia, our
government, president, in the neighbor-countries. The situation around
Gabala station is the bright example of the USA’s “work”. How could
friendly Azerbaijan and Ilham Aliyev make such anti-Russian demands
for extension of the treaty on Gabala. If there is anyone who does
not remember how all the situation began, I will remind. First, a
graduated student from MGIMO, certain Leyla Aliyeva, declared boldly
that Gabala damages the environment in the region. It is evident that
without permit of her father, the prudent daughter would never made
such statement. This is how the Azerbaijani leadership works. They
no longer respect Russia. Our leadership should revise its relations
with Azerbaijan and will make sure that Azerbaijan is not a friend
but a snake in the grass.

The United States actively create Russia’s negative image by means of
the biased NGOs, mass Media and certain public and political figures.

USA has already led Georgia out of Russia’s influence. Azerbaijan is
getting out of it. It is Armenia’s turn. Washington is doing all this
to implement its project “Big Caucasus” as soon as possible. Although
it is an old idea that originated yet under George Bush-junior, its
major goal is to strengthen the positions in the region and promote
USA’s interests, which is being successfully enforced now.

Hillary Clinton Visits Armenia On South Caucusus Tour

HILLARY CLINTON VISITS ARMENIA ON SOUTH CAUCUSUS TOUR

BBC
4 June 2012

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is visiting Armenia at the
start of a tour of the South Caucusus.

Her trip comes as a ceasefire between Armenia and Azerbaijan is
looking increasingly fragile.

The two former Soviet republics fought a bloody war over the disputed
region of Nagorno-Karabakh in the 1990s.

The BBC’s Damien McGuinness, in neighbouring Georgia, says it is
hoped Mrs Clinton will ease tensions between the two countries.

The region is dependent on US aid so Washington has much influence
there, he says.

The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan erupted as the Soviet
Union collapsed and at least 30,000 people were killed by the time
a ceasefire was declared in 1994.

Since then, a simmering stalemate has prevailed and both sides have
reported sporadic breaches of the truce.

Human rights

Both sides have been building up arms in recent months and refusing
to compromise.

It is hoped Mrs Clinton will at least call on both governments to
tone down the rhetoric and hold peace talks.

Human rights groups also want Mrs Clinton to address alleged abuses
in the region.

Azerbaijan’s harsh treatment of government critics has been in the
spotlight since it hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in May.

Authorities have dismissed criticism in the international press as
Armenian propaganda.

However, condemnation from the US Secretary of State will carry more
weight, our correspondent adds.

Mrs Clinton travels on to Georgia on Tuesday and Azerbaijan on
Wednesday.

West Uses Iran Nuke Issue To Cover Up Own Problems – Khamenei

WEST USES IRAN NUKE ISSUE TO COVER UP OWN PROBLEMS – KHAMENEI

PanARMENIAN.Net
June 3, 2012 – 15:50 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on
Sunday, June 3 accused the United States and its allies of lying about
the threat of a nuclear Iran to cover up their own economic problems,
state television reported, according to Reuters.

In a fiery address marking the 23rd anniversary of the death of
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic,
Khamenei also warned Israel against any attack on Iran, saying it
would receive a “thunderous blow”.

Khamenei – who has total command over Iran’s nuclear policy – has
publicly forbidden the development of nuclear weapons, but Western
nations suspect that Tehran is developing in isolation each of the
components required for an atomic bomb capability.

“What Americans and Westerners do is idiotic. They magnify the nuclear
issue to cover up their own problems,” Khamenei said, referring to
the economic gloom in the U.S. and Europe. “They are deceitfully
using the term nuclear weapons,” he added.

Iran’s supreme leader said Israeli talk of military strikes showed it
felt vulnerable after the fall of former Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak, a U.S. and Western ally, last year. “If they take any
miscalculated action, they will receive a thunderous blow.”

During his address, Khamenei said that sanctions were not hampering
Iran and were “deepening Iran’s hatred towards the West”.

Iran maintains it will not give up what it says is its right to
establish a peaceful nuclear program but has at times appeared
flexible to curbing high-grade uranium enrichment that is the West’s
most pressing concern.

Another round of talks has been scheduled for June 18-19 in Moscow.

Last week U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton indicated
the meeting would be crucial because of Washington’s need to see
“concrete actions”.

Javakhk Armenians Urge Clinton To Raise Vahagn Chakhalyan’s Release

JAVAKHK ARMENIANS URGE CLINTON TO RAISE VAHAGN CHAKHALYAN’S RELEASE ISSUE

PanARMENIAN.Net
June 4, 2012 – 12:15 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will visit
Georgia on June 5 as part of her regional trip to South Caucasus
countries. On this occasion a petition addressed to the U.S. Secretary
of State was passed to the “Yerkir” Union of NGOs with a request to
be published.

Over 1650 residents of the Armenian populated Javakheti region of
Georgia signed under the appeal, where they call Mrs. Clinton to
raise the issue of Armenian political figure and political prisoner
Vahagn Chakhalyan’s acquittal and release during her visit to Georgia
and meetings with the Georgian authorities, according to the press
service of “Yerkir” Union.

The petition with the attached signatures and the accompanying letter
was submitted to the U.S. Embassy on June 2, 2012.

It runs as follows, “During his activities, the Javakheti Armenian
social, political and national figure Vahagn Chakhalyan is fighting
not only for the improvement of the socio-economic conditions of the
Javakheti population and for the maintenance of the ethnic, cultural,
linguistic, religious and educational values of the Armenian population
living in Georgia but also tries to stop the process that forces
Armenians to leave the region.

Because of the above mentioned activities and for having taken over
31% of the votes from the ruling party, when being presented in the
composition of the opposition party during the local self government
elections in Akhalkalaki region of October 2006 with the organization
“United Javakhk” headed by Vahagn Chakhalyan became subject to
political persecutions. The “Javakhk-Info” agency, the “Youth”
radio, the sport-cultural and educational sections were closed by
the Georgian authorities and the edition of “Kajatun” newspaper was
banned. Vahagn Chakhalyan was arrested illegally and sentenced to
10 years of imprisonment with false accusations. The same fate was
reserved for his relatives and for many party members.

Therefore, we urge You to raise the issue of Vahagn Chakhalyan’s
acquittal and release during your visit to Georgia and the meetings
with President Saakashvili.”

KAYSERI. – The Cappadocian city of Caesarea-today’s Kayseri,
Turkey-still is one of the key pilgrimage sites for Istanbul Armenians,
because the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church-which was
built in 1191-is located there (PHOTOS).

And a group of Armenian and Turkish journalists taking part in the
“Support to Armenia-Turkey Rapprochement” Project of the Eurasia
Partnership Foundation visited this church, which is Kayseri’s oldest
Apostolic Armenian church.

The journalists were welcomed by Istanbul Armenian Garabet Stepanyan,
who voluntarily takes care of the Church, Armenian News-NEWS.am
reporter informed from Kayseri.

Stepanyan noted that Istanbul-Armenian pilgrims visit the Church
twice a year and attend the Holy Mass.

“Four Armenians have remained in Kayseri. Foreigners and heirs of
those Armenians who had left Kayseri also visit the Church,” he said.

To note, the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church of Kayseri
was last restored between 2008 and 2009; it was consecrated on November
7, 2009, and the first mass was celebrated on the next day.

Georgia’s Population 4.497 million – Geostat

Georgia’s Population 4.497 million – Geostat

Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 1 Jun.’12 / 12:38

Georgia’s population increased 0.6% in a year period and stood at
4,497,600 as of January 2012, not counting residents of breakaway
Abkhazia and South Ossetia, according to figures released by the state
statistics agency, Geostat, on May 31.

Increase in population by 28,400 came from positive natural change
(about 8,200) combined with positive net migration (20,200), Geostat
said.

Georgia’s birth rate remained more or less the same in 2000-2007 with
number of newborns varying from about 47,000 to 49,000 annually. The
birth rate increased in 2008 to 56,565 and to 63,377 in 2009,
declining to 62,585 in 2010 and further to 58,014 in 2011.

1,172,700 people live in the capital city of Tbilisi, according to
Geostat figures.

Breakdown of population per region is as follows: Imereti – 707,500;
Kvemo Kartli – 511,300; Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti – 479,500; Kakheti –
407,100; Adjara – 393,700; Shida Kartli – 314,600; Samtskhe-Javakheti
– 214,200; Guria – 140,300; Mtskheta-Mtianeti – 109,700;
Racha-Lechkhumi and lower Svaneti – 47,000.

52.3% of population is female and 47.7% – male, with 53.2% living in
cities and 46.8% – in rural areas.

13.7% of population is of age 65 and older. Geostat said share of
children up to age of four increased slightly in 2011 now making 6.35%
of the population.

The last time Georgia held census was in 2001 with population standing
at 4,4 million, a million less than in a census held in 1989.

In late April government established a special commission in charge of
preparing for a new census. It is not yet clear when the census will
be held; Geostat said earlier in May that the commission would require
at least one year to prepare.
