Heritage site in Tripoli under threat

by Misbah al-Ali

The architecture in Tripoli’s dense old city tells of its past: Mamluk
and Ottoman structures sit next to each other, some on top of Roman
ruins.

TRIPOLI, Lebanon: The architecture in Tripoli’s dense old city tells
of its past: Mamluk and Ottoman structures sit next to each other,
some on top of Roman ruins. And inside one of these buildings is a
hidden, but no less significant historic gem: the now endangered
Traveler’s Library.

Taking up some 1,000 square meters of a building that is likely from
the Ottoman era, the Traveler’s Library holds tens of thousands of
books and archives, meticulously collected by one man. Father Ibrahim
Sarouj opened the library in 1972, and moved to his current location
10 years later. He is now the historic structure’s only tenant, and it
seems that developers are attempting to evict him and take over the
valuable space his collection occupies.

Sarouj, whose family once lived in Jerusalem but has been in Lebanon
for generations, said that he has at least 80,000 titles, including
rare tomes in languages such as Greek, Dutch, Turkish, Armenian and
Aramaic. His is one of the city’s largest libraries, and it is
meticulously organized.

The Traveler’s Library includes archives documenting Tripoli’s
history, among its treasures are the inaugural issues of the first
Tripoli-based magazine, “Trablous al-Sham,” (Tripoli of Syria).

To Sarouj, the importance of the library is in “a romantic idea of
Tripoli as a city of knowledge, culture, books, newspapers and
beautiful buildings … today this idea is being destroyed by
consumption and a loss of cultural identity, both the result of
materialism.”

He called the Traveler’s Library “a rare case in the city and country
… that people need to preserve,” noting he “doesn’t make a penny”
out of the place.

Although the building has been all but abandoned, it has no visible
cracks. There are reports that the property’s owner has inked a deal
with a real estate developer that would entail demolition, and Sarouj
said he has rejected a demand by the owner that he leave.

As it is listed as a heritage site with the Culture Ministry, severe
damage and desertion could help the case for eventually tearing it
down. Neighbors told The Daily Star that they witnessed a group of
workers enter the upper floors and begin on what they assumed was a
construction project. Instead, they found that the men were
deliberately damaging the building’s stone.

Tripoli’s mayor Nader Ghazal said that as part of old Tripoli, the
building is under threat from general negligence and acts of
vandalism. “We have informed Father Ibrahim Sarouj of the recent
damage to the building, and that it was done to force the complete
abandonment of the building to make way for its demolition,” he said.

Ghazal added that municipality has sent personnel to “carry out
necessary maintenance work, and refuses to give up on the building.”

It has been reported that the building was once the city’s Serail, and
that it sits on the site of an old American school. Clearly, it is
valuable in itself.

For Sarouj and those who love the library, the knowledge kept inside
the ground floor is equally important both for its cultural value and
the information it can offer future generations. But if the sabotage
continues, he may have no choice but to take his books elsewhere.

CIVILITAS STAFF MEMBERS TO MARCH TO ARMENIAN PROSECUTOR GENERAL’S OFFICE

YEREVAN. – Armenia’s The Civilitas Foundation employees will start
a march, on Friday at 12:30pm and from The Civilitas office to the
Prosecutor General’s Office, to submit a letter of petition and the
results of a signature campaign demanding an end to the political
persecutions against Civilitas and its founder, former FM, and
Prosperous Armenia Party MP Vartan Oskanian.

More than 13,000 people from 65 countries, including dozens of cities
and villages of Armenia, joined The Civilitas staff member’s signature
campaign that was held from October 7 to Wednesday. The signature
campaign has ended, the foundation’s press service informs.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am informed earlier, the National Security
Service (NSS) Department of Investigation brought formal charges
against Vartan Oskanian.

To note, on October 2 the National Assembly voted in favor of
Prosecutor General’s petition to include Vartan Oskanian as a defendant
in a criminal lawsuit.

On May 25 NSS Department of Investigation had filed a criminal
lawsuit on charges of money laundering with respect to The Civilitas
Foundation.

The NSS Press Center had informed that an investigation is underway
in connection with selling the 100-percent shares of the Huntsman
Building Products Company for around $2 million, but not informing
Armenia’s tax authorities about this business deal; not using for
charitable purposes $1,135,000 of that amount envisioned for charity;
transferring this amount to the bank accounts opened under the names
of The Civilitas Foundation’s founder Vartan Oskanian, and of the
Foundation’s Board of Trustees member Tigran Karapetyan; and using
some of this amount for private purposes.

In addition, and as per the NSS Press Center, The Civilitas Foundation
had not presented a report on the $2 million allocated for charitable
purposes. In his turn, Vartan Oskanian considers the charges to be
politically motivated.

The Civilitas Foundation was founded in 2008 by Vartan Oskanian. After
joining Prosperous Armenia Party ahead of the May 6 parliamentary
elections, however, Oskanian gave up his post as the Foundation
Chairman.

Trade Fair within the framework of the USAID-funded “Entrepreneurial
and Civic Activism of Young People of Armenia” program.

The thirty best student companies from all regions of Armenia and

The Student Trade Fair is an annual educational activity which
allows the students to showcase their student company products and
to demonstrate the entrepreneurial skills which they have attained
during their studies.

HAYKAKAN ZHAMANAK: ARMENIAN GOVERNMENT REQUESTS TIME FROM EUROPEAN COURT

tert.am

The Armenian Government is said to have been unable to answer the
European Court of Human Rights’ (ECtHR) questions regarding the March
1, 2008 post-electoral turmoil.

According to the paper, the Court particularly asked the Government
to provide details on first President Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s house
arrest and the subsequent attempts to quell a demonstration. Citing
Ter-Petrosyan’s lawyer at the ECtHR, the paper says that the Court
sent the questions back in May, setting a deadline until September 11.

But the Government later asked for additional time. The Court
reportedly met the request half-way, extending the deadline until
November 5. The paper says further that Military Prosecutor Gevorg
Kostanyan, who represents the Armenian Government in the case, has
been engaged in finding answers to the above questions in the past
four months together with a group of lawyers assisting him. But there
seems to be no success so far, comments the paper.

Mkhitaryan E La Passione Per Zidane

solo allo Shakhtar e voglio andare avanti in Champions League”

MASSIMILIANO NEROZZI

INVIATO A YEREVAN

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, 23 anni, nuova stella dell’Armenia e dello Shakhtar

gol a Yerevan, dopo aver gia messo in difficolta proprio i bianconeri,
papa, Hamlet, andò a giocare in Francia”. Hamlet, a fine anni ’80,
quale vince 4 campionati armeni.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, com’è stato fare gol all’Italia?

partita. Peccato, mi dispiace. Però l’Italia è una grande squadra”.

Italia, la Juve, la Champions, ormai la conoscono in tutta Europa:
che effetto fa?

“Piano. Non sono una star”.

Le piacerebbe giocare in Italia?

(sorriso).

stagione”.

E nella Juve?

“Grande squadra, l’ho vista bene in Champions. Anche se noi abbiamo
fatto una gran partita”.

Ci giocherebbe?

“Mica male come paragone. Scherzi a parte, Kaka è un giocatore
fantastico.

“Pirlo. Ma anche Vidal e Vucinic. Molto bravi”.

Però li ha messi in crisi.

“Abbiamo giocato una bella partita a Torino: Lucescu ci aveva preparato
benissimo. E per poco non vincevamo”.

L’idolo quando era bambino?

“Zidane. Un grandissimo”.

Sa dove ha giocato?

“Sì, sì. Anche nella Juve”.

Armenia Facing Poultry Production Crisis

ARMENIA FACING POULTRY PRODUCTION CRISIS

WorldPoultry.net
Oct 18 2012

Poultry production in Armenia has steadily reduced in recent years
a local member of parliament warned during a special meeting of the
parliamentary committee.

“We have a serious need for increasing the production of local
(poultry) meat. Once we were an exporting country, but now we are
importing. Even with an unaided eye we could see that there is a
decline in the production numbers,” Vahram Baghdasaryan stated.

According to official statistics, over the past few years Armenia
managed to stabilise poultry production at the level of 37,000 tonnes
per year. Imports currently amount to 40,000 tonnes per year. Until
2009 the country was producing about 55,000 tonnes of poultry meat
per year, but in 2010 a serious crisis in production occurred. By that
time import supplies had a share of about 40% on the domestic market,
and now it has grown to 55%.

Baghdasaryan was supported by the Ministry of Agriculture Sego
Karapetan, who confirmed that the poultry production sector is
currently experiencing difficult times.

“Prior to 2010 we had a recession in the livestock industry, especially
in poultry production, and in 2010, birds were removed from the list
of animals to be vaccinated, and as a result we have lost about 30%
of the poultry stock in the farms of the country,” Karapetan said.

However, he also added that a special program for the development of
livestock and poultry production industries in the country has been
designed, which will be presented for approval by the government in
the coming months.

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 20, ARMENPRESS: Armenian Embassy in Lebanon confirmed
the news on the death of Armenian Georgette Sarkisian . Tigran
Balayan, Foreign Affair Ministry spokesman stated in the briefing with

Noy Dodelyan in the course of October 19 explosion orchestrated in
Lebanon capital Beirut .

A mined machine was shelled in Beirut Ashrafie Christian district
drawing panic among the population. 8 people were killed and 94 were
injured due to the explosion. Before this Secretary-General of the
United Nations Ban Ki-moon expressed his anxiety about the effects of
the Syrian crisis on Lebanon. According to him the situation in
Syrian-Lebanese border is very tense. Large numbers of Syrian
emigrants leave to Lebanon to avoid the clashes in their country. Ban
