Another Violent Attack On Armenians In Samatya

ANOTHER VIOLENT ATTACK ON ARMENIANS IN SAMATYA

Sultan Aykar, a 83 year old Armenian woman, was severely attacked in
Istanbul’s Samatya district on Tuesday evening, raising the number of
violent attacks against elderly Armenian women to at least four in
recent months.

İstanbul – BIA News Desk 24 January 2013, Thursday

Sultan Aykar, a 83 year old Armenian woman, was severely attacked in
Istanbul’s Samatya district on Tuesday evening, leaving her lose
vision in one eye.

Recently, 3 other attacks were reported on elderly Armenian women in
Istanbul’s Samatya neighborhood, where Armenian women were either
killed, severely battered or attempted to be kidnapped.

“My mother was about to enter her ground-floor apartment. She then saw
an intruder who attacked her as she unlocked her apartment door. She
fell. Hearing her screams, neighbors came down, scaring off the masked
man,” Gulseren Aykar, victim’s daughter, told bianet.

The victim has been been hospitalized after the incident, with doctors
saying that she lost vision in one of her eyes due to a severe damage.

“The intruder was 35-40 year old slender man with grey hair who was
dressed in black and wearing a snow mask,” victim’s neighbors told
police.

The police is now investigating whether all four attacks are linked together.

“Attacks target Armenians”

Menzar Etik, victim’s daughter, said they were horrified by the
indident and decided to do security check on her mother on a daily
basis.

“She is just a quite and peaceful woman. The suspect did not try to
rob her. So the intention was not to steal her possessions. She only
had a broken TV in her apartment anyways.”

Gulseren Aykar, on the other hand, claimed that attacks exclusively
targeted Armenians in Istanbul.

“What are the gains of killing an elderly woman? It is said that we
[Armenians] are equal [with Turks]. But whenever a dispute takes
place, our origins are promptly mentioned. You can’t even argue with
your neighbors confidently if you are Armenian.”

Karin Etik, victim’s granddaughter said she believed recent attacks
exclusively targeted Armenians and demanded tightening of security
measures in Armenian populated neighborhoods.

Worries amid neighborhood residents

Neighborhood residents around Surp Kevrok Church also expressed their
concerns on the recent incidents.

Elderly man of Muslim and Christian origin sitting in coffee houses
together said the attacks raised fear in the neighborhood.

“We are so surprised. We don’t know if it is organized crime or just
work of a psychopath,” one man said.

Another man with Armenian origin said they are struggling to
understand whether someone was aiming to cause terror in the
neighborhood.

Locals generally believe that attacks did not aim burglary, as no
items were reported stolen in the incidents. They also tightened up
their personal security measures, locking up doors and gazing
strangers in the neighborhood.

“God protect us. What can we do other than locking up our doors?” said
an Armenian woman.

3 previous attacks on Armenians

On December 28, Maritsa Kucuk (84) was found stabbed to death in her
Samatya apartment where she was living alone for years.

In early December, another woman (87) with Armenian descendant was
found battered in her Samatya apartment. She was hospitalized for two
week and lost vision in one of her eyes.

On January 6, the Apostolic Christmas, another woman with Armenian
origin was saved from 3 individuals who attempted to kidnap her. While
the suspects have not be caught, locals said the suspects tried to
deceive the victim over a payment issues.

Police investigation on three cases yielded no concrete results. (NV)

Armenia And Usaid To Support Black Sea Silk Road Corridor Project

ARMENIA AND USAID TO SUPPORT BLACK SEA SILK ROAD CORRIDOR PROJECT

12:23, 24 January, 2013

YEREVAN, JANUARY 24, ARMENRPESS. On January 24, the USAID Enterprise
Development and Market Competitiveness Project (EDMC) signed a grant
agreement with “Armenian Monuments Awareness Project” non-governmental
organization to implement the Black Sea Silk Road Corridor project.

The European Union, AMAP, and USAID jointly finance the aforementioned
2-year program, which will foster cross-border cooperation and economic
development in 100 communities across four countries of the Black
Sea region – Armenia, Georgia, Greece and Turkey.

The USAID informed “Armenpress” that “Armenian Monuments Awareness
Project” non-governmental organization is the lead implementer in
Armenia. It will also help alleviate rural isolation and develop
local communities through eco-friendly tourism to enhance visitors’
experiences and protect cultural monuments and biodiversity. There
are three main components to the program in Armenia. Among them are
a nature trail of 43 cultural, historical and natural sites marked
by 148 directional signs, 114 information panels, 77 trail markers,
and 55 walking tour plaques; a virtual e-trail consisting of a
web-based portal and five smartphone applications with multi-media and
multi-language content with social network integration. As agreed on by
the consortium of participating countries, Armenian IT engineers will
service the project and design the online directory and smartphone
applications used in all four countries. The directory will allow
local hospitality service providers to list their services (lodging,
food, local crafts, souvenirs, guides, etc.) and market them to the
global community; a training seminar for local, regional, and national
hospitality service providers on the use of social networks to market
local hospitality services on the trail.

The European Union supports the project through its Black Sea Basin
Joint Operational Programme as part of the European Neighborhood
and Partnership Instrument and the Instrument for Pre-Accession
Assistance. The project’s activities in Armenia are supported by
the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of
Communication and Transport, the Ministry of Nature Protection,
the Holy See of Etchmiadzin, the International Council on Monuments
and Sites (ICOMOS), the Botanical Institute of Academy of Sciences,
and the Armenian Society for the Protection of Birds, as well as the
Archaeology and Ethnography Institute of the Academy of Sciences and
the Democracy Today NGO.

sang etait repandu partout.

a Istanbul. Lorsque le chauffeur apprit qu’elle etait Armenienne, il
l’a insultee puis frappee.

Problems Still Exist In The Fields Of Mining And Agriculture, Serzh

PROBLEMS STILL EXIST IN THE FIELDS OF MINING AND AGRICULTURE, SERZH SARGSYAN SAYS IN SYUNIK
Karen Ghazaryan

“Radiolur”
16:22 23.01.2013

There are still problems to be solved in the fields of mining
and agriculture. The issue was discussed during President Serzh
Sargsyan’s previous meeting with the residents of Syunik marz. Some
of the issues raised during the previous meeting have been solved,
but there is still much to be done in the sphere.

During the meeting with voters in the city of Agarak, President Serzh
Sargsyan spoke about one of the steps leading to a more secure Armenia
– the social policy.

“Parallel to stable economic growth, we must do everything for every
citizen,” Serzh Sargsyan said.

According to him, people must be confident in the tomorrow. This is
what President Sargsyan’s platform is targeted at.

During the meeting with the residents of Meghri – the guards of the
southern gate of Armenia – Serzh Sargsyan spoke about two large-scale
programs – construction of the Armenia-Iran railway and the North-South
highway.

Also, the incumbent President touched upon pension reforms, where
the steps have sometimes been harsh, but effective.

Serzh Sargsyan said in Kajarn he does not suggest abstract things,
adding that he does not want to solve issues today endangering the
future. He said a good basis has been created during the first term
of presidency to direct the programs to build a more secure Armenia.

The presidential candidate urged the citizens to vote based on
conscience, as in that case people will have the authorities they
deserve. Serzh Sargsyan said he wants to be a President enjoying the
trust of the people.

“Mistakes were forgivable in the first years of independence, but
today they can be fatal,” President Sargsyan stated.

No Choice For Voters In Armenia

NO CHOICE FOR VOTERS IN ARMENIA

23/01 00:19 CET

Armenia goes to the polls to elect a new president in February with
incumbent Serzh Sargsyan already looking like the winner.

The reason being that none of the seven opposition candidates offer
any serious competition.

His two main rivals both announced they were unwilling to stand,
a decision that looks set to hand Sargsyan a second term at the helm.

Will Republicans Sue Uk Ambassador?

WILL REPUBLICANS SUE UK AMBASSADOR?
Naira Hayrumyan

Story from Lragir.am News:

15:27 23/01/2013

Yesterday the UK Ambassador Katherine Leach wrote in the UK Embassy
blog, “But after over a decade of elections badly marred by fraud,
perhaps the biggest challenge for the Armenian authorities in this
election is trying to rebuild and win the trust of its people and
partners. Will this happen? I very much hope so,” the ambassador wrote.

This statement would be a scandal in a legal state. They would at
least invite the ambassador to the Foreign Ministry and hand her a
note for interfering in internal affairs and insulting the state.

Moreover, they would sue the ambassador because she has actually
accused the Armenian government of usurpation. After all, when a
party comes to government through fraud, it is usurpation.

In the meantime, no sues and no notes followed. Partly because it is
the UK but mostly because the authorities admit the elections are
marred by fraud. They only say that breaches did not determine the
return of the election, which, however, does not justify falsification.

The ambassador has made several straightforward statements to which
the authorities have not responded not to draw the society’s attention
to them. For example, the ambassador hinted that three main parties –
the ANC, ARF and PAP – are not running in the election because they
backed the wrong person or are concerned about the future of their
businesses. “If they lack finance, is it because potential wealthy
backers are concerned about what will happen to their businesses if
they back the wrong horse – or because they have not found a way of
communicating their message in a way which would inspire donations
from the general public?”

The ambassador also calls the authorities to focus on three areas: the
voter list, the involvement of public servants, responding vigorously
to complaints.

Does this mean that the West will have a rigid attitude to the
Armenian election and will not recognize them? Does this mean that
Serzh Sargsyan is no longer backed by the West?

In any case, it is clear that during these elections, thanks to the
candidates and international diplomats, fraud will be disputed not
only politically but also legally.

Psychologist: Hunger Strike Is More Impressive Than Intelligent Spee

PSYCHOLOGIST: HUNGER STRIKE IS MORE IMPRESSIVE THAN INTELLIGENT SPEECH

Source: Panorama.am
15:34 23/01/2013

“Hunger strike is a new political format. Our society does not trust
too much the politicians who hold hunger strikes, and it cannot have
any prospective, especially when the demand is not clearly stated,”
said today ethnographer Hranush Kharatyan.

According to her Hunger strike is a method to concentrate the attention
of the society over his viewpoint. “Raffi Hovhannisyan’s hunger
strike, for example, was not clear. He concentrated the attention of
the society over himself but it remained unclear how it supported
his viewpoints,” the speaker said and added that she knows Andias
Ghukasyan personally.

“Many people are interested not in problems the hunger striker raises
but the hunger striker himself,” she said.

According to Armen Soghoyan, psychologist, the hunger striker is
perceived as a victim, it receives additional attention and emotions.

“This step seems more influential than the intelligent speech,”
he said.

Uruguay’s Fenix current striker Mauro Guevgeozian said he had received
an invitation from the Armenian national football squad and was going
to join the team.

“The only thing I asked the Football Federation of Armenia was a
first-class ticket, but the Federation refused to fulfill my request,”
he told NEWS.am Sport correspondent Vera Martirosyan.

“I have not joined the team. The flight lasts 20 hours, while I had
only a day to recover. That was my only demand, and I think it is fair,
taking into account the distance. However, I was refused. It turns
out that I was not so important for Armenia. I am maximum worth of
a trip in economy class. I wish Armenian team new victories,” he said.

On February 5, Vardan Minasyan’s team will play a friendly match
against Luxembourg in French Valance. The 27-year-old striker of FC
