`Yes We Have’: Stories of Armenian-American Discoveries

March 27, 2010 by Ani Nalbandian

Book Review By Ani Nalbandian

Stepan Partamian’s `Yes We Have’ is not a single story but a
compilation of various stories about the incredible Armenians who
changed American history through their inventions, discoveries and
talents. Partamian compiled over one hundred stories of influential
Armenian-Americans starting from the first Armenian colonists who
settled in Jamestown.

The multi-faceted Partamian is also the founder of the Armenian Arts
Fund, which encourages people to enhance their artistic ability in
various ways. He is perhaps best known as a flamboyant and
controversial daytime talk show host.

When opening to the first page of the book I was stunned to see a
picture of President Obama instead of a picture of the author or a
famous Armenian. Under the picture of 44th President of the United
States, Barrack Obama, was a section of his April 24th Armenian
Genocide commemoration speech. In his speech he states, `The United
States of America is a far richer country because of the many
Americans of Armenian descent who have contributed to our society¦’
This first page set a very nationalistic and enthusiastic tone to the
rest of the book.

`Yes We Have’ includes stories of inventors, musicians, actors and
actresses, businessmen and women, war heroes, politicians, scientists,
and authors. I found myself learning about countless amazing
contributions to American society made by Armenian-Americans.

This is an attention grabbing, page-turner that is very successful in
keeping the reader’s attention because it not only includes well known
Armenian-Americans’ stories, but also the lesser-known influential
Armenians such as Luther G. Simjian who invented the ATM machine.

I would have to say this book was a complete joy to read and I
guarantee everyone and anyone who reads it will be surprised and
gratified by the incredible things Armenians have contributed to
America, I know I was.

However, he said, technology provides excellent opportunities for

steal a TV set, " Ian Gillan said.

Children of Armavir District Benefit from
Free-of-Charge Dental Care
Children of Armenia Fund and Karakert Health Clinic Partner to Bring
Basic Dental Care to Communities in Need

March 26, 2010, Karakert, Armavir District * As part of the health care
component of its Comprehensive Rural Development Program, the Children
of Armenia Fund (COAF) has partnered with the Karakert Health Clinic in
providing free dental care to the children of Karakert and the
neighboring communities of the Baghramyan Region in the Armavir District
of Armenia. Dental care is not readily available to most rural Armenian
families due to shortages in both quality dental practices and resources
with which to pay the required fees for service. As a result, tooth
decay is widespread, affecting nearly 100% of the rural population,
often beginning during early childhood. This project is an excellent
example of community and individual investments in the development
activities implemented by COAF in Armenia’s rural communities and the
great impact that such partnerships have on child health.

This unique and unprecedented program began on February 1, 2010 and
lasted for 30 business days, providing free-of-charge dental care to
many needy children. Designed in accordance with the latest industry
standards and equipped with all the necessary medical supplies, the
recently opened dental unit in the Karakert Health Clinic hosted a total
of 312 children during the project period. Dr. Gevorg Ghazaryan, a
certified and qualified local dentist who operates the Dental Unit,
treated 163 teeth, extracted 110, took X-Rays of 19 children’s teeth and
gave consultations to 31 adolescents, providing specialized oral hygiene
– all completely free-of-charge. This initiative was possible in large
part due to Dr. Ghazaryan’s dedication and generosity. He and his staff
worked long hours to bring back bright smiles to rural children.
Patients were grateful for the dentist’s professionalism and moved by
his caring attitude; hardly anyone left the clinic unhappy.

Another significant component of the project was the education of the
young and the elderly in the basics of dental care and oral hygiene.
Prior to the dental screening and treatment, seminars in health
education were organized in cluster schools and kindergartens, aimed at
revealing the prevalence of existing dental problems and raising
children’s, parents’ and teachers’ awareness of the consequences of poor
dental health. Informational leaflets on oral hygiene were also
distributed to children, their parents and the general cluster
population.

The collaboration between the Karakert Health Clinic and the local
dentist in this charitable activity can serve as a model to be
replicated at health clinics and in communities throughout the region.
In the words of Dr. Ghazaryan, "It’s the duty of every village resident
to do his or her share to support the development of the community, by
participating in activities that are especially advantageous to children
and adolescents. It is COAF’s impressive work in our communities and its
remarkable achievements that have inspired me to become part of this
important philanthropy".

The only specialized dental office in the region, the Dental Unit in the
Karakert Health Clinic was established in December 2009 through the
initiative of COAF, with financial support from Newman’s Own Foundation.

WB To Provide 35-40 Million USD Loan For Road Construction In Armeni

WB TO PROVIDE 35-40 MILLION USD LOAN FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN ARMENIA

812/lang/en
2010-03-24

YEREVAN, MARCH 24, ARMENPRESS: Armenian Transport and Communication
Minister Manuk Vardanyan received today director of the Armenian
Office of the World Bank Aristomene Varudakis, responsible for the
transport programs in the South Caucasus Olivier l’Berry and other
representatives of the bank.

Transport and Communication Ministry press secretary Susanna Tonoyan
told Armenpress that welcoming the guests the minister noted that the
"Renovation of Roads of Vital Importance" program implemented by the
World Bank has a crucial importance for the development of our country
and increase of the living level of the population. M. Vardanyan
highlighted also the the programs implemented collaboratively by
the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. The minister said the
implemented programs must fulfill each other to make the carried out
work more effective.

A. Varudakis presented in details the process of implementation of
the road construction programs by the WB. It was particularly noted
that last year the "Renovation of Roads of Vital Importance" program
launched and will be finished this year. Initially its financing
amounted to 25 million USD and then got an additional financing of
36,6 million USD. A. Varudakis informed that with that program overall
240 km-long road sectors are expected to be renovated in a number of
communities. With the assessment of the WB representative the program
is quite effective as it ties the road of the rural community with
the nearby main highways as well as ensures additional jobs for the
residents of the communities.

The WB representative referred to the implementation of new road
construction programs by the bank. It was noted that the WB intends
to provide about 35-40 million USD loan by the end of the year for
the construction and reconstruction of totally 171 km road sectors
suspended by the "Millennium Challenges Corporation" as well as the
sector of an inter-state road’s crossroad taking to Halidzor village.

The works on reconstruction of the latter are expected to be finished
by the end of October 2010.

At the end of the meeting A. Varudakis invited M. Vardanyan to
Tbilisi where May 12 a conference of the heads of international donor
organizations dedicated to the transport sphere will be conducted
organized by the World Bank. Delegations of transport ministers of
Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan will take part.

A.Aghayan: For Changing The Power The Opposition Should Be Changed

A.AGHAYAN: FOR CHANGING THE POWER THE OPPOSITION SHOULD BE CHANGED

Aysor, Armenia
March 25 2010

Armen Aghayan, member of the "Armenian elections" initiation group
thinks that the parliament and the opposition do not have enough
power to influence on the ratification process of the Armenian –
Turkish protocols.

"ANC has almost agreed, and the ARF wing of the opposition is moving
to that direction," Armen Aghayan noticed.

According to him the problem of the authorities has received
another formulation; it is getting connected with the "change of the
opposition" little by little. According to Aghayan our society has
the right to have an opposition which will have distinct positions
concerning the national issues.

However, Armen Aghayan doesn’t see any danger of out of turn elections,
even more, he is sure that the wing which has the power doesn’t even
think about it.

As for the conversations concerning Robert Qocharian’s returning
to policy A. Aghayan noticed that it is the authorities who own the
administrative resources and to "expect that R. Qocharyan will return
to the power by the national elections, is meaningless."

Formation Of Armenia-Turkey Historic Committee: Delayed-Action Bomb

FORMATION OF ARMENIA-TURKEY HISTORIC COMMITTEE: DELAYED-ACTION BOMB TO PROTOCOLS

PanARMENIAN.Net
25.03.2010 19:56 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The idea of Armenia-Turkey historic committee
formation can be compared with delayed-action bomb to Protocols,
according to former ambassador at large, ex member of TARC David
Hovhannesyan.

As he noted during Armenia-Turkey expert discussions in Yerevan,
"Creation of this structure will further delay Armenia-Turkey
rapprochement process. Turkey’s recognition of Armenian Genocide is
necessary for establishment of bilateral relations."

Ankara’s attempts to link Azerbaijan’s interests with Armenia-Turkey
normalization process suggest the process to be nothing but imitation,
the expert concluded.

The Protocols aimed at normalization of bilateral ties and opening of
the border between Armenia and Turkey were signed in Zurich by Armenian
Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and his Turkish counterpart Ahmet
Davutoglu on October 10, 2009, after a series of diplomatic talks
held through Swiss mediation. On January 12, 2010, the Constitutional
Court of the Republic of Armenia found the protocols conformable to
the country’s Organic Law.

Second Turkish Film Festival To Open In Yerevan

SECOND TURKISH FILM FESTIVAL TO OPEN IN YEREVAN

24.03.2010

An Armenian non-governmental organization will open a second festival
of Turkish films in Yerevan on Thursday as part of its efforts to
promote Turkish-Armenian dialogue.

The three-day festival will feature over a dozen of motion pictures,
documentaries and even animations. They will compete for a single
prize to be awarded by an amateur Armenian jury.

According to the organizer of the event, the Yerevan-based Caucasus
Center for Peace Initiatives (CCPR), ordinary viewers’ opinion will
be the main criterion in the selection of the winner.

The CCPR already held such a festival a year ago. Its chairman,
Georgi Vanian, said on Wednesday that Turkish filmmakers’ interest
in the initiative has sharply increased since then.

"We had only one application from Turkey for the first festival,"
Vanian told RFE/RL. "We obtained all other films included in the
competition from the archives of local and international festivals
taking place in Turkey."

"This year, we received 77 film applications before the submission
deadline," he said. The purpose of the festival, sponsored by the
British Embassy in Armenian, is to give Armenian society a better
idea of modern-day Turkey, added Vanian.

The CCPR held a similar festival of Azerbaijani movies in the Armenian
capital last October. The civic group was also the organizer of
"days of Azerbaijan" at a Yerevan public school in December 2007.

Deputies Are Cautious

DEPUTIES ARE CAUTIOUS

During the last few days, the most discussed topics are the statements
of the Armenian former foreign minister Vardan Oskanyan on the change
of power and of the Armenian former president Robert Kocharyan on
the economic policy.

The Republican deputy Gagik Minasyan and Sukias Avetisyan evaded
commenting the possibilities for Robert Kocharyan’s return noting
that they would not like to make predictions.

According to Gagik Minasyan, the acting Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan
works very well and his anti-crisis program successes.

Sukias Avetisyan says the former president is well-aware of the
situation and can give assessments. Nevertheless, he did not rule
out Kocharyan’s return noting that such an attempt may be useful for
the country.

According to the ARF member Artyusha Shahbazyan, the Armenian economy
registered progress and developed despite its mistakes, examples
of which are the crystallization of the oligarchic system and the
strengthening of the shadow economy.

Shahbazyan thinks that Kocharyan’s actions contain some signs of
return. The example of which is his visits to Iran and France. He
thinks these are steps coordinated with Serge Sargsyan.

The Republican deputy Sukias Avetisyan nevertheless assessed the
statement by Vardan Oskanyan. According to him, Oskanyan is envious
because during his tenure the foreign political front was not so
active.

Artyusha Shahbazyan agreed with Vardan Oskanyan on the opinion that
is the power is not able to solve the problems of the country, it
will have to resign. "Though we do not have this opinion today",
added Shahbazyan securing himself.

Newly Released FBI Documents Support Explosive Claims by Former FBI
Translator Sibel Edmonds

Recently released FBI documents prove the existence of highly sensitive
National Security and criminal investigations of "Turkish Activities"
in Chicago prior to September 11, 2001. These documents add further
support to many of the allegations that former FBI translator Sibel
Edmonds has claimed, in public and in Congress, since 2002. The
documents were released under a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
request into an organization called the Turkish American Cultural
Alliance (TACA), an organization repeatedly named by Ms.

Edmonds as being complicit in the crimes that she became aware of
when she was a translator at the FBI.

The documents released under FOIA are almost completely redacted,
but they do support many of Edmonds’ claims, including:

There were a number of very serious FBI investigations into "Turkish
activity in Chicago" involving a number of targets, including TACA

These investigations were related to "National Security" among
other things.

These investigations were regarded as so sensitive that no files were
to be uploaded to FBI’s computer system.

Congressional corruption was involved.

The FBI repeatedly conducted actual "physical surveillance" against
Turkish and American targets.

Some of these investigations were shut down in 2001.

The documents comprise primarily of internal FBI ECs (Electronic
Communications) between FBI offices. Most of the ECs are titled
"Turkish American Cultural Association" although one from Feb 2000 is
titled "Turkish Investigations in Chicago" which indicates that there
were at least seven different pending investigations into Turkish
activity in Chicago, and another later document from July 2001
indicates that there were at least ten investigations into TACA alone.

The earliest document is a November 1999 EC from the FBI’s National
Security Division (NS-2D) to FBI field offices in Chicago, Washington
DC, Los Angeles and New York (although there is a referenceto
a September 1999 EC from NSD.) The timing is significant. In an
article in The American Conservative by Phil Giraldi, Ms. Edmonds
notes that although there were investigations into Turkish activity
dating back to 1996, most of that activity was being monitored by
Counter-Intelligence based on FISA warrants because the main targets
were foreigners, however in 1999 investigations were opened into
‘US Persons’ and "they wiretapped the congressmen directly."

The FBI was obviously concerned about ‘campaign donations’ being
paid to Congressional Representatives by these groups. Ms. Edmonds
has repeatedly referred to certain groups making "different kinds of
campaign contributions – legal and illegal, declared and undeclared" to
various congressional members. Two days after an EC from the National
Security Division, Chicago reviewed the Federal Electoral Commission
(FEC) database which contains details of donations to congressional
campaigns. Chicago was apparently interested in donations made by
"three individuals who attended the meeting at TACA."

The FBI was also interested in the leadership of TACA. One EC notes
that TACA held elections in 2000 and provides a list of all the
newly elected officials. The EC states "Most pertinent to the above
investigations was the fact that REDACTED had been REDACTED." We know
that Mehmet Celebi was elected President of TACA at that meeting. Ms.

Edmonds has previously referred to Celebi as a key player in the
Turkish mafia in the US, noting that the Celebi family is involved
in arms and heroin trafficking. Celebi was also Vice-President of the
Assembly of Turkish-American Associations (ATAA), another organization
named by Ms. Edmonds and others as being involved in various criminal
activities.

In 2008, Celebi briefly received some attention when he was key
fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, and was nominated as one of Clinton’s
Chicago delegates to the 2008 Democratic National Convention. He was
eventually kicked out of the Clinton campaign because of the scrutiny.

At the time, Ms. Edmonds said:

"In 2005, Vanity Fair reported that Dennis Hastert had been bribed
by Turkish interests. If people want to investigate this further they
should FOIA the FBI’s Chicago Field Office for information regarding
Mehmet Celebi going back to 1997. If the FBI is honest, there will
be boxes and boxes of files responsive to these FOIA requests."

Famed whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg once said that "Sibel says that
suitcases of cash have been delivered to the Speaker of the House,
Dennis Hastert, at his home, near Chicago, from Turkish sources,
knowing that a lot of that is drug money."

The aforementioned Vanity Fair article, apparently trying to dodge
some potential legal liability, suggested that "the reported content
of the Chicago wiretaps may well have been sheer bravado, and there
is no evidence that any payment was ever made to Hastert," however
a July 2001 EC regarding the "Statistical Accomplishments" of the
TACA case notes that there were thirteen separate instances of actual
‘Physical Surveillance’ in the TACA case alone, suggesting that the
FBI may very well have first-hand evidence of some of these crimes.

One fascinating feature of many of these documents is that many of
them ominously warn about the sensitivity of the investigation. A
typical warning reads:

"Extreme caution must be exercised in the handling of sensitive
information contained within. No material pertaining to this
investigation is to be computer uploaded. Information concerning
this REDACTED investigation is not to be shared with CID (Criminal
Investigation Division) absent FBIHQ/DOJ concurrence."

Ms. Edmonds has often stated that these investigations into illegal
Turkish activity were shut down by the White House and State Department
in 2001 and 2002, but that the FBI Chicago Office fought to keep them
open. Two of the ten cases related to TACA were officially closed by
Chicago in July 2001, however even the documents relating to these
‘closed’ cases still warned that the information required ‘extreme
caution’ and were not to be uploaded or shared with CID.

Asked to comment on these new documents, Ms. Edmonds replied:

"Finally! I’ve been saying this for years, and now we finally have
documented proof from the FBI of this Turkish criminal activity based
in Chicago.

This is fantastic, but even this is only the tip of the iceberg. The
main question is this: Why has the White House and the State Dept
been so determined to shut these investigations down? They shut down
these investigations at the FBI, they shut me down with the State
Secrets Privilege.

What are they hiding? Chicago was the center of it all, Chicago was
the center of the foreign espionage activity, and the center for money
laundering, and also a major heroin distribution center. Celebi was a
key player, but Dennis Hastert, Mayor Daley, Robert Creamer and other
US officials also helped facilitate these activities. When will we
see some accountability?"

That is the ultimate question. We now have even more evidence of these
crimes – but there is still no sign of any accountability. What will
it take?
