Archbishop Barsamian Responds to Ricciardone’s `Deeply Offensive’ Statement

Primate Khajag Barsamian sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton responding to assertions made by Ambassador Francis
Ricciardone, President Barack Obama’s recess appointment to serve as
U.S. Ambassador to Turkey.

Primate Khajag Barsamian
Answering a question from New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez, Amb.
Ricciardone had said, `Most of the Christian churches functioning
prior to 1915 are still operating as churches. Some churches of
significance operate as museums. The remaining have fallen into
disrepair or were converted to mosques for lack of use.’

Barsamian said, `Ambassador Ricciardone deeply offended
Armenian-Americans with his remarks, opening sensitive wounds and
potentially setting back the gradual process of healing.’ He added,
`In all charity, perhaps the Ambassador is simply unaware of certain
facts. But mastery of the history of a country, its dark as well as
bright chapters, is essential to serving the United States effectively
and diplomatically in this important and complex region.’

The full text of Archbishop Barsamian’s letter to Clinton appears below.

Dear Madame Secretary:

My kind greetings and blessings you, as you continue your service to our nation.

As Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, I
write regarding the statements made by Ambassador Francis Ricciardone,
President Obama’s appointment as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of
Turkey, during his confirmation hearing.

Please know that we have been generally supportive of the efforts of
the U.S. government to promote a more normal relationship between the
republics of Turkey and Armenia. Likewise, we greatly respect and
appreciate the productive role you personally have played in such
initiatives.

With those efforts in mind, it is difficult to understand Ambassador
Ricciardone’s assertions about the status of historic Armenian
churches, and other Christian churches, in Turkey. The loss of these
many hundreds of churches, their neglect and outright destruction, and
the conversion of many of our sanctuaries into mosques, is a matter of
intense pain to Armenians: an ongoing reminder of the loss of life and
the destruction that we suffered as a result of the 1915 Genocide.

Ambassador Ricciardone deeply offended Armenian-Americans with his
remarks, opening sensitive wounds and potentially setting back the
gradual process of healing. In all charity, perhaps the Ambassador is
simply unaware of certain facts. But mastery of the history of a
country, its dark as well as bright chapters, is essential to serving
the United States effectively and diplomatically in this important and
complex region.

Again, it is our general support for your efforts, Madame Secretary,
as well as our desire to see genuine progress made to benefit the
entire region, that prompts this letter to you. I am confident that
you will give these thoughts all due consideration, as you make
decisions about the vital role America plays in Turkey, in Armenia,
and throughout the world.

Madame Secretary, you have our great respect and support in all your
undertakings. May our Lord strengthen and guide you in your service
to our beloved country.

With prayers,
Archbishop Khajag Barsamian
Primate

YEREVAN. – The Court of Appeals of Armenia released two young activists
of opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC), who were arrested
during the incident on August 9. The court upheld the detention of
the third activist Tigran Arakelyan, freeing Artak Karapetyan and
Sargis Gevorgyan.

Sargis Gevorgyan’s lawyer Stepan Voskanyan filed a motion for change of
measure of restraint on the travel ban. In case of Artak Karapetyan
lawyer Varduhi Elbakyan filed a motion for change of measure of
restraint on bail of AMD 3 million ($ 8200), which was also approved.

Preventive measure against Tigran Arakelyan, who is accused of using
violence against a law enforcement agent (1 and 2 parts of Article
316 of Armenian Criminal Code), remained the same, because the court
did not consider the application adequately justified. Arakelyan’s
lawyer Varduhi Elbakyan said she would challenge the decision in the
Court of Cassation.

Earlier Armenian News-NEWS.am informed that 7 ANC activists have
been detained on August 9, around 10:00 p.m. from Northern Avenue of
Yerevan downtown.

Young Assyrians Leading The Way In Sydney

YOUNG ASSYRIANS LEADING THE WAY IN SYDNEY

Assyrian International News Agency (AINA)

Aug 19 2011

For the second time in one month, the newly established Young
Assyrians, a subsidiary of the Assyrian Universal Alliance-Australian
Chapter, managed to successfully officiate a major youth function. Mr.
Shahen, the Regional Secretary of the Assyrian Universal Alliance
in Australia and New Zealand, said the first youth conference was
held on July 3, 2011, marking Assyria Day. The conference addressed
a number of issues, including the problems facing Assyrian youth in
the homeland and in the Diaspora. Also discussed was the challenge of
creating a sustainable and duplicable platform for the next generation
to get involved in matters pertaining to the future of the Assyrian
Nation. Additionally, the need to develop a strategy to create
awareness of Assyrian history and culture among the young generation
were discussed, and finally a method to build durable and lasting
communication between the youth in the Diaspora and the homeland.

On August 11 Young Assyrians organized a seminar on the Assyrian
genocide. The keynote speaker was Dr Anahit Khosroeva, an Assyrian born
in Armenia. Dr Khosroeva is a member of the prestigious International
Association of Genocide Scholars and was cordially invited by the AUA
to speak at genocide conferences in Sydney and Melbourne. Mr. Shahen
said that audiences were inspired by the great presentation made
by Dr. Anahit at the Parliament House of New South Wales on Friday,
August 5, as well ad her address at the local genocide seminar held
in Fairfield, organized by The Young Assyrians.

“She touched the hearts and minds of all attendees with her eloquent
and impassioned presentation,” said Mr Shahen. Dr Khosroeva presented
expansive evidence showing the act of genocide perpetrated against the
Assyrian nation by the Young Turks was committed with the intention
of exterminating and expunging the Christian nations living in the
Ottoman Empire, the Assyrians, Armenians and the Greeks.

The seminar organized by The Young Assyrians on the August 11 was
attended by a large number of Assyrian youth, who expressed a desire
to participate in future events and a willingness in working for the
Assyrian cause.

VICTIMS IN SEROP DER-BOGHOSSIAN SEXUAL ABUSE CASE CONFIRM EARLIER TESTIMONIES IN COURT

epress.am
08.19.2011

Aram Amirzadyan, one of the plaintiffs in the criminal case against
former adviser to the RA prime minister, owner of Metal Prince Ltd.

Corporation and Akhtala Ore Processing Plant CJSC Serop Der-Boghossian,
arrested in February on sex abuse charges, shared with local daily
Aravot the details of the four court sessions closed to the public
that have taken place thus far.

The interview is presented below in part.

How many victims and witnesses are named in this case?

10 victims and 13 witnesses.

How many have been examined thus far?

5 of the victims have been examined.

Has the accused made a motion connected to his health or judicial
rights during the trial?

No. The period of motions has not begun. He is quite a proper
participant in court, subject to the court~Rs legal requirements and
procedures defined by investigating the evidence.

A mother of one of the victims (who are minors) during the trial
didn’t want to watch the video or contribute to her son’s testimony. A
representative (a teacher) participated and watched the video in
her place.

That is the parent’s right.

During the investigation, what position did this parent have? Perhaps
what was said is as a result of a certain influence, or why did a
contradiction arise between you and the victim’s parent; that is,
between plaintiffs?

There is no substantial contradiction between the plaintiffs or in
the position of the plaintiffs and the victims. Till now the evidence
examined was substantiating the charges against the accused. None
of the victims have refuted the testimonies they made earlier. And
then, also attached to the case is the physical evidence, the videos
supporting the charges, which are also investigated in court, and no
one has yet disputed these. As for the incident you are referring to,
in this case the victim himself didn’t want his mother to be present
during the viewing of the video, to which she agreed.

And does he [i.e. the accused] show any reaction during the screening
of the videos that he shot and kept and which make up the physical
evidence in the case?

We watch the videos. In some cases, he himself points out which video
refers to whom [i.e. which victim].

Is it possible that the trial will be open to the public at any point?

The trial being in camera is due to this being an exceptional case;
that is, in terms of the sexual immunity of the person. In any case,
according to Article 16 of the RA Criminal Procedure Code, the court’s
verdict will be announced publicly.
