Joe Manganiello unveils Armenian calligraphy tattoo

Amid the ongoing divorce with actress Sofia Vergara, Joe Manganiello, 46, revealed a fresh forearm tattoo this week.

The new ink, a tribute to his Armenian heritage, was showcased in an August 22 Instagram post by Ruben Malayan, a calligrapher who conceptualized and scripted the design rather than a tattoo artist.

The lengthy caption of the post read, “My latest work, so far largest in scale. Angel (Angel) for @joemanganiello, who I am sure will wear it with pride! Good luck. @rubenmalayan.

Manganiello positioned his forearm prominently in the photo, alongside Bubbles, the dog that Vergara allowed him to keep.

The calligraphy-style font, meticulously crafted by Malayan, showcased the Armenian word ‘Հրեշտակ’, translating to ‘angel’ in English, according to the calligrapher.

The image depicted Manganiello in a waist-up shot, clad in a short-sleeve black t-shirt.

Manganiello’s connection to his Armenian heritage runs deep through his maternal lineage, as his great-grandmother Terviz “Rose” Darakjian is a survivor of the Armenian genocide. His pride in his roots has been a recurring theme in his public statements over the years.

The Crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh: “A Creeping Genocide”

Aug 27 2023

A humanitarian catastrophe is looming in Nagorno-Karabakh. The government of Azerbaijan is blocking the region: food, medicine and hygiene items have not been allowed to be delivered to the area for a good two months. Not even the Red Cross is allowed into the region. Azerbaijan wants to bring the region under Baku control – the ethnic Armenians in the region want it

Belgium Urges Baku to ‘Publicly’ Recognize Armenia’s Territorial Integrity, End Artsakh Blockade

Belgium’s Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib speaks in Yerevan in Aug. 22

Hadja Lahbib, the Belgian Foreign Minister visiting Yerevan on Tuesday, called on Azerbaijan to publicly recognize Armenia’s territorial integrity and voiced her country’s official position that the eight-month-long blockade of Artsakh must end.

“Our stance is the same both in Yerevan and Baku,” Lahbib told reporters during a press conference Yerevan with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan, when asked about what her message will be when she visits Baku.

“Belgium is deeply concerned about the tension caused by the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The only way out of this conflict is the negotiations process and mutual concessions. During my upcoming visit to Azerbaijan, I will tell my Azerbaijani colleague that the agreements reached as part of the meetings in 2023 under the mediation of the President of the European Council Charles Michel have recorded positive progress,” said Lahbib.

“The leaders of the two countries have reciprocally recorded each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. I welcome the Armenian Prime Minister’s courageous statements pertaining to the path of peace. I also reiterate that the security and rights of the population must be guaranteed,” she added.

“We have welcomed the Armenian Prime Minister’s statement on publicly recognizing Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and we call on the Azerbaijani authorities to do the same,” she said.

“What matters most for us is to overcome this deadlock, in order for the humanitarian situation to improve and the living conditions for the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh to improve. This is part of the ceasefire agreement, and we call on Armenia and Azerbaijan to return to negotiations, be it in Washington or anywhere else,” said Lahbib.

“There are plenty of high-level negotiations. What’s lacking however, is the implementation [of agreements] on the ground,” the Belgian foreign minister said.

She added that during her meeting with Mirzoyan, the two emphasized the need for the presence of experts and commissions, who “will be able to end the animosity, will give the chance for real reconciliation and trust between the two peoples so that the two peoples living on both sides of the border get the opportunity to live in peace.”

The latest Armenia-Azerbaijan talks held in Brussels showed that a peace treaty is close and therefore the leaders of both countries must do everything in order for the Armenian and Azerbaijani people to live in peaceful conditions, Lahbib said, adding that her visit is aimed at supporting and encouraging more talks.

“Belgium is deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, and its deterioration. The restriction of movement along Lachin Corridor is having serious consequences, causing serious dangers of famine and disease. During our meeting, representatives of the ICRC also stated that the life of residents in Nagorno-Karabakh is in danger, which is naturally unacceptable. Belgium fully shares the EU’s stance that ensuring the security of the population of Karabakh and free movement in Lachin Corridor is Azerbaijan’s obligation. Belgium will continue to be guided by this approach in is diplomatic contacts,” Lahbib said.

The Belgian foreign minister reiterated that position during a meeting with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan later on Tuesday.

Earlier that day, she also visited Dzidzernagapert Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex.

Azeri military targets only wheat field in Sarushen to prevent Nagorno-Karabakh from producing bread, warns official

 13:50,

YEREVAN, AUGUST 19, ARMENPRESS. The Azerbaijani military has been keeping the only wheat field in the Sarushen village under gunfire for a long time to deprive the residents of the opportunity of producing bread, the Nagorno-Karabakh State Minister Gurgen Nersisyan warned Saturday.

Farmers and agricultural equipment are targeted by Azerbaijani forces from nearby outpost whenever they try to approach the wheat field for harvesting.

On August 15, the Nagorno-Karabakh authorities reported that a man has died of starvation in Nagorno-Karabakh as a result of the ongoing Azeri blockade which has led to a humanitarian disaster.

“Although every time the date and time of the planned harvest is coordinated by the Russian peacekeepers with the Azerbaijani side, and the harvest is organized at the presence of the peacekeepers on the ground, as soon as the work starts a constant shooting from various small arms starts taking place, and the agricultural work gets suspended while the civilians are taken to a safe location by the peacekeepers,” Nersisyan added.

“The residents of Sarushen are deprived of their only source of bread, the chance of collecting grain,” Nersisyan said.

Farmers in Sarushen have come under Azeri gunfire many times throughout the week.

The Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia and the rest of the world, has been blocked by Azerbaijan since late 2022. The Azerbaijani blockade constitutes a gross violation of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh ceasefire agreement, which established that the 5km-wide Lachin Corridor shall be under the control of Russian peacekeepers. Furthermore, on February 22, 2023 the United Nations’ highest court – the International Court of Justice (ICJ) – ordered Azerbaijan to “take all steps at its disposal” to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions.  Azerbaijan has been ignoring the order ever since. The ICJ reaffirmed its order on 6 July 2023.

Azerbaijan then illegally installed a checkpoint on Lachin Corridor. The blockade has led to shortages of essential products such as food and medication. Azerbaijan has also cut off gas and power supply into Nagorno Karabakh, with officials warning that Baku seeks to commit ethnic cleansing against Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. Hospitals have suspended normal operations.

Azerbaijan says Armenian detained in failed border incursion

Al-Arabiya, UAE
Aug 16 2023
AFP: Azerbaijan said Wednesday that it detained a member of an Armenian sabotage group trying to infiltrate its border, an allegation denied by Yerevan as tensions between the neighboring countries grow.

The incident comes one day after an EU border patrol unit in the region said it came under gunfire, which Armenia blamed on Azerbaijan.

“On August 16 at about 11:15 am, (0715 GMT) a reconnaissance and sabotage group of the Armenian army tried to infiltrate the territory of Azerbaijan,” Baku’s defense ministry said.

“Thanks to the vigilance of our units, supported by firepower, the Armenian soldiers’ provocation was foiled,” it said, adding that a wounded member of the Armenian group was captured.

The incident took place around the Istisu settlement in the Kyalbajar area, near the Armenian border, the ministry said.

“The other members of the reconnaissance and sabotage group were forced to retreat,” it added.

Armenia’s defense ministry said Baku’s version of events was “an absolute lie,” and that an Armenian reservist had strayed from a combat position on their own accord.

“A possible scenario and the circumstances of how a reservist could end up on the Azerbaijani side is being studied,” it said.

Tensions between Baku and Yerevan have escalated sharply in recent days, as both sides accuse the other of cross-border gunfire and violating agreements.

Most disagreement between the two centers around Nagorno-Karabakh — a small mountainous region recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan but populated primarily by Armenians.

Baku and Yerevan have fought two wars over the region and have been unable to reach a lasting peace settlement, despite mediation efforts by the European Union, United States and Russia.

Cyprus calls on Azerbaijan to lift blockade of Lachin Corridor

 20:16,

YEREVAN, AUGUST 11, ARMENPRESS. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus Constantinos Kombos has expressed full support to Armenia and has called on Azerbaijan to lift the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Phone conversation with Armenian FM Ararat Mirzoyan on dire humanitarian crisis following the blockage of Lachin Corridor by Azerbaijan,” Kombos posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Reiterated Cyprus’ full support to Armenia and called Azerbaijan to lift the blockage in line with 2020 ceasefire statement & ICJ decision.”

The Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting Nagorno Karabakh with Armenia and the rest of the world, has been blocked by Azerbaijan since late 2022. The Azerbaijani blockade constitutes a gross violation of the 2020 Nagorno Karabakh ceasefire agreement, which established that the 5km-wide Lachin Corridor shall be under the control of Russian peacekeepers. Moreover, Azerbaijan then illegally installed a checkpoint on Lachin Corridor. The blockade has led to shortages of essential products such as food and medication. Azerbaijan has also cut off gas and power supplies Nagorno Karabakh, with officials warning that Baku seeks to commit ethnic cleansing against Armenians in Nagorno Karabakh. Hospitals have suspended normal operations.

On July 26, Armenia sent a humanitarian convoy carrying emergency food and medication for Nagorno-Karabakh, but Azerbaijan blocked the trucks at the entrance of Lachin Corridor.

Asbarez: Artsakh Farmers Again Targeted by Azerbaijani Gunfire

An Artsakh farmer’s truck was damaged as a result of Azerbaijani attack

Azerbaijani forces continued to target civilian farmers in Artsakh by opening fire at the Sarushen village on Wednesday.

As a result of the shooting a farmer’s vehicle was severely damaged.

“On August 9, the Shosh Precinct of the Askeran Regional Police Department received a report that around 10:50 a.m. (local time), civilians working in the wheat fields in Sarushen, Askeran came under various caliber small arms fire from Azerbaijani military outposts deployed in the administrative territory of the Sargsashen village, Martuni region. Fortunately no one was hurt,” the Artsakh police said in a statement.

All work on the field was suspended and the incident was reported to the Russian peacekeeping command, the statement adde.

In addition to blockading Artsakh through the eight-month-long closure of the Lachin Corridor, Azerbaijani forces, on a regular basis, continue to open fire at civilian targets in Artsakh.

Pashinyan calls on Azerbaijan not to block humanitarian aid for Nagorno-Karabakh as step of commitment to peace agenda

 11:35, 3 August 2023

YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has urged Azerbaijan not to block the Armenian humanitarian aid convoy’s access to Nagorno-Karabakh as a step showing commitment to the peace agenda.

Speaking at the August 3 Cabinet meeting, PM Pashinyan said that the humanitarian convoy carrying 361 tons of emergency food and medication remains blocked at the entrance of Lachin Corridor. He said that Azerbaijan is grossly violating the terms of the 9 November 2020 trilateral statement and the blocking is illegal.

“I call for not obstructing the access of the humanitarian goods sent by Armenia through the Lachin Corridor, as a step of commitment to the peace agenda, moreover because obstructing the passage of the goods is a gross violation of the 9 November 2020 trilateral statement and the decisions of the International Court of Justice,” Pashinyan said.

The Armenian Prime Minister pointed out Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s recent statement in an interview with Euronews, where the latter again falsely claimed that the Lachin Corridor is open. Pashinyan said that the Russian peacekeepers deployed in Nagorno-Karabakh ought to comment on this statement, as to why the Russian peacekeepers are failing to ensure the humanitarian convoy’s access to Nagorno-Karabakh if Azerbaijan insists the corridor to be open.

“I believe that an explanation of this issue is important and our relevant bodies must work in the direction of receiving explanations over this matter,” the PM added.

Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia and the rest of the world, has been blocked by Azerbaijan since late 2022. The Azerbaijani blockade constitutes a gross violation of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh ceasefire agreement, which established that the 5km-wide Lachin Corridor shall be under the control of Russian peacekeepers. Azerbaijan has also cut off gas and power supply into Nagorno-Karabakh, with officials warning that Baku seeks to commit ethnic cleansing against Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. Hospitals have suspended normal operations.

On July 25, the Government of Armenia said that it will try to send over 360 tons of flour, cooking oil, sugar, and other foodstuffs and medication to Nagorno-Karabakh to mitigate the humanitarian crisis resulting from the blockade of Lachin Corridor. Armenia requested the Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh to escort the aid but Azerbaijan has blocked the convoy.
