Turkish Press: EU backs Türkiye-Armenia talks to reopen key rail link

Yeni Şafak, Turkey
April 30 2026

Brussels welcomes normalization momentum, saying the Kars-Gyumri line would bring ‘concrete gains’ for the South Caucasus region.

The European Union has voiced strong support for the latest round of talks between Türkiye and Armenia aimed at restoring rail connectivity, describing the process as a sign of broader positive change in the region.

EU praises normalization momentum

In a statement issued by the office of EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, Brussels said it “welcomes” the meeting of the Armenia-Türkiye bilateral working group held in Kars, a city in northeastern Türkiye. The group discussed progress toward re-establishing direct rail links. “The sustained momentum in the Armenia-Türkiye normalization process reflects the broader positive dynamics taking hold in the region – essential for lasting peace and stability,” the statement read. The EU encouraged both countries to pursue full normalization.

Kars-Gyumri line to boost regional connectivity

The bloc noted that once operational, the Kars-Gyumri railway would significantly enhance regional connectivity and deliver “concrete gains” for communities across the South Caucasus. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening transport links through its Cross Regional Connectivity Agenda, the Global Gateway strategy, and the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor. Both Armenia and Türkiye are described as key partners in these efforts.

Hands off Armenia: Europe must act now to protect Armenia’s democracy

Renew Europe

April 30, 2026

With Armenia’s parliamentary elections set for 7 June 2026, the European Parliament today adopted a resolution initiated by the Renew Europe Group, calling for urgent action to protect the integrity of the vote.

Armenia is the only democracy in its region. On 26 March 2025, its parliament adopted legislation formally expressing the country’s aspiration to join the European Union. That choice carries a price: Russia is already working to undermine it. Disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, illicit political financing and the mobilisation of oligarchic networks are being deployed to destabilise Armenia’s democratic process – mirroring tactics used in recent elections in Moldova and Georgia.

The interference goes to the highest level: on 1 April 2026, Vladimir Putin personally pressed Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to allow detained Russian-Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan to stand in the June elections. Vote-buying attempts have been documented, and Russia is applying direct economic pressure on Armenia to influence the outcome of the vote. Renew Europe condemns these actions in the strongest terms. Armenia’s sovereignty is non-negotiable.

“Armenian democracy is a miracle in a region where Armenia stands as an exception. Faced with all those seeking to pressure Armenian voters, the country is looking to the European Union to help it hold free and fair elections. Let us not let it down,”

Nathalie Loiseau
Renew Europe MEP, France, Horizons

said Nathalie Loiseau (Horizons, France), Renew shadow rapporteur for this resolution and Chair of the EUDS Committee.

The resolution calls for a robust international observation mission, enhanced cybersecurity for electoral infrastructure, full transparency of campaign financing, and strong safeguards against vote-buying and foreign-funded coercion. It also welcomes the establishment on 21 April 2026 of the EU Partnership Mission in Armenia (EUPM Armenia), which – following the model deployed in Moldova – will provide direct support to Armenian institutions in countering hybrid threats, disinformation and illicit financial flows ahead of the vote.

The upcoming European Political Community Summit on 4 May and the first-ever EU-Armenia Summit on 5 May in Yerevan must be more than symbolic. They are a historic opportunity to send an unambiguous signal of European solidarity and to politically anchor Armenia within Europe through concrete deliverables on connectivity, security and democratic resilience.

Sports: Georgia and Armenia to jointly host the 2029 FIFA Under-20 World Cup

April 30 2026

FIFA has selected Georgia and Armenia to jointly host the 2029 Under-20 World Cup. This will be the first time that these two countries from the South Caucasus region will host a FIFA tournament.

The decision was made during a FIFA Council meeting held in Vancouver, Canada, just before the 76th FIFA Congress. This tournament, held every two years, brings together 24 youth teams from around the world and is considered a platform for future stars. The Football Federation of Armenia described this as a ‘historic achievement’ and stated that it symbolizes the trust of the international football community.

The federation’s president, Armen Melikbekyan, mentioned that this tournament will provide local players and fans with a World Cup-like experience. Meanwhile, the president of the Georgian Football Federation, Levan Kobiashvili, expressed confidence that this event will give a new direction to the development of football in the region, calling it a ‘unique moment’ in Georgia’s independent football history. The competition began in 1977 in Tunisia, originally known as the FIFA World Youth Championship, and was renamed to its current form in 2007.

So far, 23 editions have been played, with Argentina Under-20 winning the most titles at six, while Brazil Under-20 follows with five titles. Recently, Morocco won the title in the tournament held in Chile in 2025.

The next edition in 2027 will be jointly hosted by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. FIFA’s decision is seen as a significant step for regional sports development, with hopes of revitalizing youth football in the coming years.

Pashinyan threatened to fire officials who use administrative resources

The Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, has strongly condemned the use of administrative resources in order to involve citizens in the events with his participation.

The head of the government has promised to immediately dismiss the organizers of similar gatherings, as well as the bureaucrats who obey illegal instructions.

During the briefing following the government session, the Prime Minister referred to the rumors circulating among the public that people are forcibly taken to official meetings. Pashinyan emphasized the absolute inadmissibility of such a practice and outlined tough measures of response.

According to him, any public official, who will be seen using administrative levers in order to ensure presence at events with the participation of the Prime Minister, will be fired without prior discussion.

Officials who will participate in the event under the pressure of administrative resources will be punished in the same way. At the same time, Pashinyan reminded that every citizen has the legal right to participate in public events at his own will.

The head of the government also added that sanctions in the form of dismissal will also be applied in case of illegal prohibition of participation in events by abuse of official position.

Asbarez: IALA Announces 2026 Grants, Increases Awards

The International Armenian Literary Alliance is pleased to announce its four annual grants for creative writing and literary translation. Application opens on September 1st until September 30th, 2026, with awards of up to $3,500 per grant – an increase from $3,000 in previous years – made possible by a generous donation from Souren A. Israelyan.

The International Armenian Literary Alliance’s Creative Writing Grant will award $2,500 to one Armenian writer whose work-in-progress shows exceptional literary and creative ability. The grant genre rotates annually to support a diverse range of literary voices. Following previous years focused on fiction and nonfiction, the 2026 grant will be awarded for a collection of poetry, to be judged by Armen Davoudian.

IALA’s Creative Writing Grant is meant to foster the development of contemporary Armenian literature in English through an annual monetary award, and support Armenian writers who have historically lacked resources in the publishing world. Additionally, IALA will support grant recipients in promoting their publications through marketing on our website and social media channels, book reviews, readings and discussions.

“I’m honored to serve as a judge for this year’s poetry grant and look forward to spending time with the work emerging across the Armenian literary community,” says IALA Advisory Board Member and judge Armen Davoudian.

The Israelyan Eastern Armenian Translation Grant from the International Armenian Literary Alliance will award $3,500 to one translator working from an Eastern Armenian source text into English, whose work-in-progress shows exceptional literary and creative ability. In 2026, the grant will be awarded for a work of literature (in any literary genre) written in Eastern Armenian and published any time after 1915, including the Modernist and Contemporary periods. The grant will be judged by Dr. Shushan Avagyan and Dr. Myrna Douzjian.

Many in the Armenian diaspora and the English-speaking world are unable to read works in the original Armenian, and therefore, have centuries of literature inaccessible to them. Translators working with Armenian texts have traditionally lacked resources in the publishing world, as well as access to other funding, due to the overwhelming influence of so-called “majority languages.” IALA’s Israelyan Eastern Armenian Translation Grant, made possible by Souren A. Israelyan, supports translators working with Armenian literature through a monetary award. Additionally, IALA will support grant recipients in promoting their publications through marketing on our website and social media channels, book reviews, readings and discussions.

The Israelyan Western Armenian Translation Grant from the International Armenian Literary Alliance will award $3,500 to one translator working from a Western Armenian source text into English, whose work-in-progress shows exceptional literary and creative ability. In 2026, the grant will be awarded for a work of literature (in any literary genre) written in Western Armenian from any period. The grant will be judged by Dr. Tamar Marie Boyadjian and Dr. Talar Chahinian.

IALA’s Israelyan Western Armenian Grant, made possible by Souren A. Israelyan, supports translators working with Armenian literature through a monetary award. Additionally, IALA will support grant recipients in promoting their publications through marketing on our website and social media channels, book reviews, readings and discussions.

“Translation has the power to build bridges to the Armenian literary tradition and better acquaint us all with the beauty and wisdom held within it. We are very excited to be supporting the next generation of bridge builders and warmly encourage translators at all stages to submit their work,” says IALA Advisory Board Member and 2026 translation committee leader Dr. Jennifer Manoukian.

The Israelyan English Translation Grant from the International Armenian Literary Alliance will award $3,500 to one translator working from an English source text into Eastern Armenian, whose work-in-progress shows exceptional literary and creative ability. In 2026, the grant will be awarded for a work of contemporary literature written by an Armenian author in English, from a list selected by IALA. The complete list of texts which IALA would like to see translated feature authors who represent and support the Armenian literary community; their works were selected for their diversity in voices and subject matters. The grant will be judged by Tatevik Ayvazyan.

Despite the growing number of translated works from English to Eastern Armenian in recent years, translated literature remains an area that needs further attention and development. IALA’s Israelyan English Translation Grant, made possible by Souren A. Israelyan, supports translators working with literature written in the English language through a monetary award. Additionally, IALA will support grant recipients in promoting their publications through marketing on our website and social media channels, book reviews, readings, and discussions.

Etchmiadzin Calls Destruction of Churches ‘Cultural Genocide’ by Azerbaijan

The before and after of Stepanakert’s Holy Mother of God Cathedral

The Holy See of Etchmiadzin called the destruction of Armenian churches in Artsakh by Azerbaijan “cultural genocide,” and condemned the Caucasus Muslim Board for justifying the recent demolition of the Holy Mother of God Church in occupied Stepenakert.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Etchmiadzin directly responded to a statement issued by the Caucasus Muslim Board, which last week said that the recent demolition of the Stepanakert Cathedral and another, smaller, church was justified, claiming that they were built during the period of what they called “Armenian occupation of Karabakh.”

“The desecration, appropriation or destruction of holy places cannot be justified by any political, administrative or pseudo-legal wording. We reject the statement that churches built during the period of Artsakh’s independence were ‘illegally constructed.’ The destruction of holy places, razing them to the ground on this basis is a clear violation of international principles for the protection of religious and cultural heritage and a cultural genocide,” Etchmiadzin said in its statement.

“The accusation by the Caucasus Muslims Board against the Armenian Church of hindering the establishment of peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan is clearly unfounded and false. Peace is hindered by the falsification of historical facts, the violation of the rights of the forcibly displaced Armenians of Artsakh, the appropriation of the Armenian heritage of Artsakh, and the systematic effort to eliminate any trace of Armenian,” the Holy See emphasized.

“The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin calls on international religious and human rights organizations, all responsible organizations for the protection of cultural heritage, to take effective steps to stop Azerbaijan’s deliberate policy of destroying Armenian culture,” the statement added.

168: Pashinyan “relinquished” his service in the border guard forces of the NSS

April 30, 2026

On April 29, with the article “Is Anna Vardapetyan saving the director of the NSS or did she resort to “innocent manipulation”?” article: have published, which you don’t know why, caused “commotion” in the General Prosecutor’s Office, when it is based on dry facts, and we only tried to show that mentioning the cases recorded in the border guard troops under the National Security Service among the number of deaths recorded in the RA Armed Forces or in the context is misleading and manipulative.

And today, on April 30, during the briefing organized after the Government session, Nikol Pashinyan, referring to the service of the border guards, said the following wording did

“I am the prime minister of the Republic of Armenia, but I may not know if there is a question about how the border guard of the Republic of Armenia performs his service, with what logic, because it is a matter of my agenda. no”.

Let’s remind that the Border Guard troops are under the National Security Service, and the Security Service is directly subordinated to Nikol Pashinyan.

  • MAYBE YOU WOULD TELL THE PEOPLE THAT IT IS THE ARTSACH AND NOT THE ASPHALT? MHER MKRTCHYAN

In particular, attached to Nikol Pashinyan’s decision of June 28, 2018 on approving the RA NSS statute and structure հավելվածի՝ In the section related to NSS administration and management, it is stated that “The National Security Service is managed by the Prime Minister.” And the director of the National Security Service “manages the organizations and institutions assigned to the national security service”.

In other words, how the border guard will serve, what will happen in the border guard troops, both Nikol Pashinyan and NSS director Andranik Simonyan, and of course the NSS border guard troops commander, are responsible here. Now, when Nikol Pashinyan, who a few days ago, again with pride declared that in the demarcated part of Tavush Marz, the border guard troops of Armenia and Azerbaijan carry out their service without helmets, without body armor, and with rifle magazines not on rifles, but in bags.

Can we say that Nikol Pashinyan puts all the responsibility in this case on the director of the NSS? And in the event that, during the question-and-answer session with journalists, he stated that Armenian border guards will be stationed in the border areas with Iran and Turkey step by step, along with the strengthening of the state’s capabilities.

“According to the agreement signed with Russia in the early 1990s, it is envisaged that along with the capacity of the RA border guard troops, we should take the border under the control of our border guard troops. We also make payments to the Russian border guards for guarding the border. It happened in the past when the Russian partners raised the issue of increasing these amounts, because these amounts are not enough to provide that service.

We also calculate that there is a topic of increasing these funds, we can spend them on developing our border guard capabilities, and little by little, as much as we have the opportunity, the Russian partners will fit in the amount, which is not too difficult for us to pay, and we will take over the control of the remaining parts of the border. This is provided for in the contract,” Pashinyan elaborated.

It should be noted that the Armenian border guards have already replaced the Russian border guards on the border with Turkey At the “Akhurik” checkpoint. The same practice also applies to those on the border with Iran At the “Agarak” checkpoint.

Armenia-Turkey state border from February this year “Prophet” the border service at the crossing point is also carried out exclusively by the forces of the RA border guard troops.
