Lachin Residents Are In A Panic

LACHIN RESIDENTS ARE IN A PANIC
28 September, 2006
Today Armen Eghyan, Gevorg Mirzoyan and Gagik Petrosyan, members of the
initiating group «Protection of the Occupied Territories», announced
that Hamlet Khachatryan, head of the Kashatagh administration hinders
the resettlement of the territories and must resign from his post.
«It turns out that this high-rank official is used to bribe taking and
hasn’t got the slightest notion of his post. He realises neither its
meaning nor its military significance», claims Armen Eghyan and adds,
«He treats the local residents as criminals caught red-handed. He
demands bribes from all the citizens who turn to him with any request.
And in case any of the citizens dares to complain of Mr. Mirzoyan, he
merely advises them to leave Kashatagh».
Jirayr Sefilyan, commander of special regiment of Shoushi, and a member
of the above-mentioned group, informed the participants of today’s press
conference about the current state of Kashatagh. He claims that the
number of inhabitants has significantly decreased in the past two years
reaching 7.5 thousand.
52 villages of Katashagh are deprived of electricity and water. The
roads are in an awful state. The villages counter certain problems
connected with education, health care and realization of agricultural
goods. Recently, the authorities of Katashagh have fined a 12-year-old
girl for picking up wood to heat their hearth.
Mr.Sefilyan maintains that administrative obstacles and fining bodies
have greatly increased in Kashatagh. As a result of this, residents
began to abandon the territory and the villages became deserted. All is
done on purpose, claim the members of the group.

Amsterdam: Turkish politicians trapped

Turkish politicians trapped
By FRANS BOSMAN and ANNA RIJKSBARON
Het Parool (Dutch national newspaper)
28-09-2006, 11:56
AMSTERDAM – Almost all Amsterdam politicians of Turkish descent refuse to
recognize the genocide that Turkey committed against the Armenians in 1915.
Therefore, half of the councilors that this newspaper approached have no
understanding for CDA (Christian Democratic Appeal) and PvdA’s (Dutch Labor
Party) decision to withdraw members from the national elections’ draftlist,
because they refuse to recognize the genocide.
Most claim to know too little about the issue to give an opinion and ask for
“more research.” Others admit that terrible things happened, in which
hundreds of thousands of people perished, but they do not want to call it a
genocide.
Except for one, most did not let this newspaper know what they were really
thinking. The one who did let us know said that he would be honored if the
PvdA should request a recognition of the genocide. A few were simply afraid
to voice their views. One took back his comments later.
The Turkish politicians struggle with double loyality. If they recognize the
genocide, they will betray their supporters. If they keep the views of their
homeland, they will get in trouble with their parties.

Georgia Aims To Resolve "Frozen" Conflicts By Force – Bordyuzha

GEORGIA AIMS TO RESOLVE “FROZEN” CONFLICTS BY FORCE – BORDYUZHA
ITAR-TASS, Russia
Sept 27 2006
DAGOMYS, September 27 (Itar-Tass) – The Georgian leadership aims at
“resolving so-called frozen conflicts by force,” Secretary General
of the Collective Security Treaty Organization Nikolai Bordyuzha said.
“I have no doubts whatsoever on this account,” Bordyuzha said at the
11th “All Russia-2006” forum on Wednesday, “the Georgian leadership’s
actions, especially its Defense Ministry’s, are aimed at aggravating
the situation.”
“Georgia is seeking to join NATO, but cannot realize this wish until
the “frozen conflicts” have been settled. Its leadership therefore is
counting to achieve the solution of the South Ossetian and Abkhazian
problems at all costs, including by using force,” he underlined.
Tbilisi should understand that the use of force will expand the
conflict, “which will affect not only Georgia but also Armenia and
Russia. How can it be quenched afterwards?” Bordyuzha went on to say.
In his view, the main thing now is not to rush things, in order to
prevent the worsening of the conflict situation.
“One should understand that Georgia will never change its geographic
position and will remain Russia’s neighbor. Rulers come and go,
while peoples and neighboring states remain. One should think not
about his wishes of the present moment, but extrapolate his actions
for a long-term perspective. It appears the Georgian leadership lacks
such an understanding,” the CSTO secretary general underlined.

BAKU: Bilgehan: Turkish People Will Never Accept False "Armenian Gen

BILGEHAN: TURKISH PEOPLE WILL NEVER ACCEPT FALSE “ARMENIAN GENOCIDE” CLAIMS
Azeri Press Agency, Azerbaijan
Sept 27 2006
“Turkey will face pressures for the false “Armenian genocide”
till Armenia gives up its groundless claims. The main thing here
is Turkey’s demonstrating decisiveness and rejecting the baseless
claims once and for all,” member of Turkish parliamentary delegation
to PACE, CHP parliamentarian Gulsun Bilgehan told the APA’s Turkey
bureau exclusively.
The parliamentarian said there some shortfalls in the work to prove
groundlessness of the false claims of “Armenian genocide”.
“Despite certain measures, the report of the European Parliament
showed there still some shortfalls in this field. This is due to the
unstable activity of the authorities. The French experience showed
that pretenders go back when they encounter a severe reaction. For
instance, France rejected its bill on recognition of the false
“Armenian genocide”. We’ll continue our struggle if the similar bill
is on the agenda. I think the authorities make some mistakes and do
not work efficiently regarding this matter,” she said.
Ms.Bilgehan stressed that the Turkish people will never accept the
false “genocide” claims.
“The Turkish people will never accept these claims. All must know
this. We are not going to enter the European Union by accepting a
false claim,” she stressed.
Gulsun Bilgehan is Turkey’s second President Ismet Inonu’s
granddaughter.

EU Chamber Censures Turkey On Rights

EU CHAMBER CENSURES TURKEY ON RIGHTS
United Press International
Sept 27 2006
STRASBOURG, France, Sept. 27 (UPI) — The European Parliament,
meeting in France, approved a report Wednesday criticizing Turkey
for not doing enough to meet European Union membership criteria.
The chamber voted 429-71 in favor of the report, with 125 delegates
abstaining.
The report criticizes Turkey’s human rights shortcomings, but does
not call on Turkey to officially recognize as genocide the forced mass
evacuation and related deaths of Armenians by Ottoman Turks from 1915
to 1917.
Armenians have pushed for such recognition, claiming more than 1.5
million died in what some call the Armenian Holocaust.
Turkey vehemently denies the deaths were genocide.
The report calls on Turkey to increase reforms around freedom of
expression, religious rights, women’s rights, labor unions, minority
rights, cultural rights and judicial independence, the EU Observer
reports.
The report also expresses hope Pope Benedict XVI’s upcoming visit
to Turkey will “contribute to strengthening inter-religious and
intercultural dialogue between the Christian and Muslim world.”
