Armenia’s Q1 Trade Gap Remains Stable Y/Y

According to the latest customs-based trade data from the Armenian
National Statistical Service, exports in March soared two-thirds
year-on-year (y/y), bringing total exports for the first quarter of
the year to USD347.6 million, up 32.4% y/y. Meanwhile, imports
increased by 7.2% y/y in March and by 9.8% y/y in the first quarter,
totalling USD956.1 million in the first three months of the year. The
resulting trade deficit of USD608.5 almost exactly matches the gap in
the same period a year ago. According to further details, exports of
vehicles soared, as did exports of precious and semi-precious stones
and items. On the import side, mining products increased most (by 40%)
and also formed by far the largest category. Meanwhile, imports of
machinery and equipment gained over 6%. Just over half of Armenia’s
exports were directed to EU countries, but it grew slower than total
exports.

Significance:Metal prices are still boosting export values. However,
while high prices are still benefiting Armenian terms of trade and
exports values, this impact is expected to start fading now, being
more muted especially in the second half of the year. This will
further be reflected in weakening industrial growth. As the Armenian
economy is very dependent on imports both for consumption and
investment goods, imports are expected to remain fairly high even as
the overall economic growth is now slowing, and thus, more muted
aggregate demand should be have some suppressing impact on imports as
well. The trade deficit thus remains wide enough to have a notable
deteriorating impact on Armenia’s current account gap. This external
deficit is a key source of financial risks for the country, especially
as remittance inflows, which provide for a non-debt-creating means for
financing the trade gap, are also subject to some risks given the
persisting instability in the external economic environment.

Exploding balloons injure scores at Armenian rally

There was a scary moment for people attending a concert at a political
rally in Armenia when several bunches of balloons exploded, sending
several dozen people to the hospital.

Over 140 people were injured on Friday when a large number of party
balloons simultaneously exploded at a political campaign concert in
the Armenian capital, Yerevan.

The concert was put on by President Serzh Sarkisian’s governing
Republican party and comes ahead of parliamentary elections on Sunday.

According to the emergencies ministry, 144 people suffered burns when
small bunches of the balloons were ignited, sending a fireball into
the air and concert-goers running in panic. Just over 100 went to the
hospital, but no one suffered serious injuries.
The balloons, which were filled with gas, may have been ignited by a cigarette.

Sunday’s poll is widely seen as a test of Armenia’s democracy.

Monsieur Charles Aznavour aura bientôt 88 ans

Shahnhour Varinag Aznavourian de son vrai nom, est né en France, de
parents Arméniens, en 1924. Il n’avait que 9 ans quand il prit son
nom de scène « Charles Aznavour » qui ne le quittera plus Jusqu’à
aujourd’hui. Le 22 mai il fêtera ses 88 ans et ses 79 ans de scène. En
1960 il sortit son premier grand succès, une autobiographie sur la vie
d’un artiste qui a du mal à percer dans le monde de la musique et
parle de son nom qu’il voit, affiché en grosses lettres, sur les
devantures des salles de spectacle. Aujourd’hui l’ex « petit Charles »
est une super star internationale. Le « Grand Charles », 50 ans après
la sortie de « Je me voyais déjà » a son nom affiché en « Grand » à
chacun de ses concerts et continue à remplir les salles de spectacle
du monde entier, dans son complet bleu qui ne le quitte jamais.

Charles Aznavour c’est aussi le comédien de talent qui débuta sa
carrière cinématographique en 1936 avec un film de Jacques Daroy (La
guerre des gosses) et offre une filmographie de 62 titres de 1936 à
2006. 70 ans de carrière de comédien ou il s’illustra sous la
direction de producteur de renom comme Claude Lelouch (Edith et
Marcel) – (Viva la vie), Jean Cocteau (Le testament d’Orphée), André
Cayatte (Le passage du Rhin), François Truffaut (Tirez sur le
pianiste), Denys de la Patellière (Un taxi pour Tobrouk) Claude
Chabrol (Le fantôme du chapelier). Une carrière qui se termine en
2006 par un film de Laurent Herbiet (Mon Colonel).

Le Grand Charles est aussi un homme de c`ur qui ne craint pas d’offrir
sa participation à des `uvres humanitaires comme en 1989 ou avec un
groupe d’artiste et amis, il vient en aide aux sinistrés d’Arménie qui
viennent de subir un gigantesque tremblement de terre et auxquels il
offre les bénéfices de sa chanson « Pour toi Arménie » Mais avant
tout, Charles Aznavour est surtout un auteur, compositeur, interprète
qui compte 57 albums dont le dernier « Moments » est paru le 26
janvier 2012. Parolier reconnu, il est l’auteur de nombreuses chansons
dont les plus connues : Mes emmerdes – la Bohème – Les plaisirs
démodés – Désormais et Je M’voyais déjà pour ne citer qu’eux. En 1960
il écrit « Je M’voyais déjà » ou il se voit comme il est aujourd’hui,
70 ans plus tard : « chez le tailleur le plus chic j’ai fait faire Ce
complet bleu qu’était du dernier cri » – « Je M’voyais déjà en haut de
l’affiche en dix fois plus gros que n’importe qui » – « Je M’voyais
déjà adulé et riche signant mes photos aux admirateurs » – « mes
traits ont vieilli, sous mon maquillage mais la voix est là, le geste
est précis et j’ai du ressort » ces paroles d’un autre ge ont été
écrites par un jeune auteur compositeur de 18 ans qui ne savait pas
encore qu’il deviendrait commandeur de l’ordre de la légion d’honneur
– chevalier de l’ordre de la couronne en Belgique – Nommé Héros
National en Arménie – grande médaille de la chanson Française par
l’académie Française – Premier prix de la chanson Française au Japon
avec « La Mamma » – Ambassadeur itinérant d’Arménie auprès de l’Unesco
– Citoyen d’honneur de la ville de Montréal – Nommé citoyen d’honneur
de la ville de cannes (palmes d’or) – Officier honorifique de l’ordre
du Canada » – officier de l’ordre national du Québec » et tant
d’autres honneurs et distinction qui ne l’empêche pas de rester «
lui-même ».

Biberyan en concert pour ‘La rencontre’ au Fil du vin demain

Le rythme d’un concert tous les 15 jours au Fil du vin a bien repris.
Ce vendredi 4 mai, ce seront Murat Biberyan (guitare, chant), Thierry
Girardot (basse) et Didier Bettoli (batterie) qui présenteront le
premier album de Biberyan, sorti en janvier 2012 et intitulé La
rencontre . Ce concert sera, pour ainsi dire, la répétition générale
avant le grand concert à Villeneuvette le 25 mai de 19 h 30 à 1
h.Musique à la fois pop et rock ayant des accents affirmés de chanson
française, le parti pris de Murat Biberyan est de faire la place belle
à des textes simples.Ceux-ci dépeignent des moments de vie, des
réflexions sur des thèmes aussi divers que le temps, les interactions
humaines, les actualités, la paternité? tout ce qui touche à la vie
d’un homme et qui ne peut le laisser indifférent.Né à Istanbul en 1967
au sein d’une famille arménienne, Murat passe les premières années de
sa vie sur les bords du Bosphore en Turquie.

Sa grand-mère, joueuse de poker professionnelle, l’emmène avec elle au
gré des tournois d’un point à l’autre de la Turquie. Jusqu’à l’ge de
9 ans, il grandira avec insouciance dans un contraste de traditions et
de modernité. A 9 ans, on l’envoie rejoindre ses parents en banlieue
parisienne. Le déracinement est total. Murat doit faire face à une
nouvelle vie : apprentissage du français alors qu’il ne connaît que le
turc et l’arménien, « nouvelle » famille, nouvelle école, nouveaux
copains, nouvelle culture?Il ne verra plus ses grands-parents qu’une
fois par an, à l’issue d’un périple en voiture à travers l’Europe. De
ces voyages, il gardera le souvenir des clivages entre les pays
traversés, l’image des enfants qui faisaient les routes de la
Yougoslavie de Tito?Murat commence la guitare en autodidacte à 20 ans.
Son univers musical est éclectique : musique orientale, hard rock,
chanson française, rock français. Après avoir joué au sein d’un groupe
de rock pendant plusieurs années, il commence à mettre en musique les
textes de Karine Leblevec et à exploiter ses propres chansons écrites
au fil des années. La formation instrumentale est simple et le son
résolument acoustique : une chanteuse, une guitare, une basse, une
batterie.Puis Murat rencontre Titi et, en 2005, en intégrant Les
étranges musiciens de Mister Jack , il fait la connaissance de Didier,
qui vient du jazz, bossa, blues, rock. Dès cet instant, les trois
musiciens ne se quitteront plus.Mais La rencontre , c’est Maud Gerlier
en 2009. Elle marquera un tournant dans la vie de Murat. En 2010 naît

Ballot carousel was organized in polling station in Armenia

YEREVAN. – There was a ballot carousel at Yerevan’s polling station
11/02, Armenian Revolutionary Federation member Ara Nranyan told
Armenian News-NEWS.am.

According to him, while entering the polling station voters were being
given filled out ballots and were ordered to put them in the ballot
box.

ARF promised to publish further details.

Eight political parties and one block participated in the parliament
elections in Armenia: Republican Party of Armenian, Prosperous Armenia
Party, Orinats Yerkir, Armenian National Congress, Heritage Party, ARF
Dashnaktsutyun, the Communist Party of Armenia, Democratic Party of
Armenia and United Armenians Party. For entering a 131-seat National
Assembly (Parliament), parties must poll over 5% of votes, while
blocks – over 7%.

Voter turnout at Armenia’s parliamentary election reaches 51.53%

The voter turnout at parliamentary elections as of 5 p.m. on Sunday
reached 51.53% or 1,300,117, News.am cites the Armenia’s Central
Electoral Commission as saying.

Eight political parties and one block have presented their nominations
– Republican Party of Armenian, Prosperous Armenia Party, Orinats
Yerkir, opposition Armenian National Congress, opposition Heritage
Party, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, the Communist Party of Armenia, Democratic
Party of Armenia and United Armenians Party.

For entering the National Assembly, parties must poll over 5% of
votes, while blocks – over 7%.

Armenians Vote in Calm Parliamentary Poll

Armenians are voting for a new parliament Sunday, four years after the
former Soviet state’s presidential election ended in deadly clashes
between police and opposition supporters.

Opinion polls indicate President Serzh Sarkisian’s Republican Party
and its ally, Prosperous Armenia, are expected to win a majority of
the 131 seats. Unemployment, poverty and Armenia’s long-running
disputes with neighbors Turkey and Azerbaijan are among the top
campaign issues.

So far, this election has been largely calm unlike the 2008 disputed
presidential race. However on Friday, some 150 people were injured
when gas-filled balloons exploded at an election campaign concert in
the capital Yerevan.

Mr. Sarkisian’s political party was holding the event, and the
president promised a full investigation. It was not immediately clear
what caused the explosions, but some reports said it could have been
caused by a cigarette lit too closely to the balloons.

Yerevan, Moscow discuss satellite launch

Officials from Russia’s national space agency recently paid a visit to
Yerevan to meet Armenian President Tigran Sarkisian. The topic at the
talks was the possibility of launching a first-ever commercial
satellite owned by Armenia that would operate in the area of
telecommunication, Armenia Liberty.org reported. To this effect the
parties are willing to take necessary measures to put that project
into practice. In presence of Russian ambassador in Yerevan Vyacheslav
Kovalenko, Sarkisian and two deputy directors of the Russian Central
Research Institute of Machine Building (TsNIIMash) discussed prospects
for co-operation between the two countries in the area of space.
TsNIIMash also known as Roscosmos is part of Russia’s Federal Space
Agency, which specialises in designing ballistic missiles and
spaceships. During the meeting, both sides agreed that first step in
the launch of satellite in Armenia would be to start the process of
registration with the International Telecommunication Union.

Exit poll: Republican Party of Armenia wins the parliamentary
elections with 44.4% of the votes

The Republican Party of Armenia is leading in the parliamentary
elections, according to the preliminary results of the exit polls.

The Gallup International Association conducted an exit poll among 25
thousand voters all over Armenia.

According to the preliminary results reported by Armenia TV, the votes
were distributed as follows:

Republican Party of Armenia – 44.4%

Prosperous Armenia Party – 28.8%

Armenian National Congress – 6.33%

Orinats Yerkir Party -6.14%

Heritage – 5.92%

Dashnaktutsyun – 5.18 %

Armenian Communist Party – 2.2%

Armenian Democratic Party – 0.51%

United Armenian Party – 0.45%

Levon Ter-Petrosyan: `PAP should be punished if it is guilty’

`Those who violate the law should be punished, I am for it, but you
also should keep watching the Republicans to be punished as well,’
said the ANC leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan at the joint election
monitoring headquarters session touching upon the criminal cases filed
at the RA Prosecutor General’s Office.

At the Prosecutor General’s Office criminal cases were filed over N12
and N4 poll stations for distributing electoral bribes in favor of
PAP. Gohar Viziryan from N12 poll station had applied to law
enforcers. In the same poll station the ANC has got a candidate in the
person of Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s nephew, Tigran Ter-Petrosyan.

L.Ter-Petrosyan repeated that those who are guilty should be punished.

Vardan Oskanyan who was present at the session agreed, saying, `Yes,
the guilty should be punished.’
