Obituary: Art Bedian (1922-2013)

OBITUARY: ART BEDIAN (1922-2013)

Posted on April 10, 2013

On March 4, members of the Granite City, Ill., Armenian community
came together to bid farewell to Arthur (Kegham) Bedian at funeral
services held in St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Apostolic
Church. The services were followed by a military funeral ceremony
performed by members of the U.S. Air Force in front of the Armenian
Genocide Memorial. Mourners then gathered at the Community Center
for a memorial dinner and to celebrate Arthur Bedian’s life.

Art Bedian A life-long member of the Granite City community, Arthur
was born to Asadour and Elizabeth (nee Yeghiazarian) Bedian on Aug. 28,
1922, and spent his childhood in the Lincoln Place neighborhood. As a
youth, he played in the “Daron” band and was a member of the Granite
City High School’s 1940 State Champion basketball team He was a charter
member of the Granite City “Antranig” Chapter of the ARF Tzeghagrons
(later Armenian Youth Federation), joining along with dozens of other
youth in 1933 during a visit by famed Armenian General Karekin Njdeh.

It was through the AYF that he met the love of his life, Mary T.

Knekleian, whom he married on Oct. 18, 1942, in Detroit, Mich., and
who passed away on Nov. 6, 2004. Shortly after his marriage to Mary,
Arthur was called up to serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War
II, where he fought in New Guinea and the Philippines and achieved
the rank of Technical Sergeant. Upon returning home from the war,
he joined his wife in Detroit for a brief period of time before
returning to Granite City.

In 1954, the Armenian community acquired a church sanctuary in
Lincoln Place and Arthur began a relationship with St. Gregory’s that
continued throughout the rest of his life. He served many years as a
member of the Board of Trustees, often as chairman, and as delegate
to the National Representative Assembly of the Armenian Prelacy. He
remained a faithful parishioner of the church throughout his life,
attending nearly every Sunday until his health declined.

Arthur Bedian was a long-time leader of the “Hriar” Gomideh of the
Armenian Revolutionary Federation and also taught in the Armenian
school. Frustrated by the lack of a modern English-Armenian dictionary
for non-native Armenian speakers, Arthur spent over a decade creating
a simplified English-Armenian dictionary.

Arthur Bedian was also a family man, and took much joy in being a
part of the lives of his children, Lisa Bedian Kurtz and her husband
Robert, of St. Charles, Mo., and Greg Bedian and his wife Silva, and
his grandchildren Knar, Garin, and Daron Bedian, of Arlington Heights,
Ill. He was predeceased by his sister Sue (Surpouhi) Neman, and is
survived by his sister Carolyn (Keghouhi) Chalmers and her husband
George of Middletown, N.J., and his extended family and many friends.

The 40-day requiem (karasounk) service will be held on Sun., April
14, 2013 at St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Apostolic Church
in Granite City. Memorials may be given to St. Gregory’s Armenian
Apostolic Church of Granite City, the Hairenik Association, or Meridian
Village Benevolent Care, and will be accepted by Irwin Chapel, 3960
Maryville Road, Granite City, IL 62040 ().

President and Congress to support NKR’s “constructive involvement
with the international community’s efforts to reach a just and lasting
solution to security issues in that strategically important region.”

reaffirmed today in Maine’s principled stand for the independence of
the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh,” said Michelle Hagopian, ANCA Eastern

grow American support for Artsakh’s independence in cities and states
across our great nation.”

HOVANNISIAN TO POLICE: YOU CAN COME TO LIBERTY SQUARE AND ARREST ME

April 9, 2013 – 11:23 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Heritage party leader, former presidential candidate
Raffi Hovannisian issued a statement, urging for the resignation of
the police chief and the head of National Security Service.

“Armenian police have issued a statement, believing themselves
authorized to slam my actions, based on unfounded and absurd judgments.

I urge Serzh Sargsyan, police chief Vladimir Gasparyan and National
Security Service head Gorik Hakobyan to stop representing the Armenian
people. If you consider my rallies “illegal, with their peaceful
nature depending on the current developments”, come to the Liberty
Square and arrest me. I am going to assume the responsibilities
Armenian people entrusted to me on February 18.

Let me make it clear that it’s neither Raffi Hovannisian’s victory,
nor Serzh Sargsyan’s defeat,” the statement reads.

Turkey Sees Genocide Issue Stalling Trade

TURKEY SEES GENOCIDE ISSUE STALLING TRADE

The Toronto Star, Canada
April 8, 2013 Monday

Turkey’s ambassador to Canada says the Harper government’s decision
to brand the killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide may
be hindering a potentially lucrative trading relationship.

Ambassador Tuncay Babali made clear in an interview with The Canadian
Press that Canada’s position on the First World War-era slaughter of an
estimated 1.5 million Armenians still carries a sting for his country.

But that doesn’t mean Turkey doesn’t want to press on with forging
a deeper economic relationship with Canada, ideally a free trade
agreement to complement the current Canada-EU free trade talks once
they are completed, he said.

Babali said the $2.5 billion in two-way trade “is far from the
potential” of what Turkey predicts would result from deeper economic
ties: $10 billion to $15 billion within five years. He said Turkey
would like to open free trade talks with Canada but would like a
gesture from Canada on the genocide issue.

‘Who Elected Serzh Sargsyan?’ Opposition Rep Asks

‘WHO ELECTED SERZH SARGSYAN?’ OPPOSITION REP ASKS

21:02 ~U 09.04.13

Nikol Pashinyan, an MP from the opposition bloc Armenian National
Congress (ANC), informed Azatutyun Radio that the police are preventing
demonstrators from going up the Memorial to Armenian Genocide victims.

Mr Pashinyan participated in the rally with his wife and children.

“If Baghramyan Avenue does not belong to people, the question is:
who elected Serzh Sargsyan?”

“The political elite must leave their posts. Serzh Sargsyan must
realize that Armenia’s people do not accept him as the country’s
president,” he said.

Chief of the Yerevan Police Department Nerses Nazaryan told
journalists that the demonstrators could approach the Memorial to
Armenian Genocide victims (Tsisternakaberd) via Saryan Str and Victory
Bridge. In response to a demonstrator’s remark, Mr Nazaryan said,
“You are bloodthirsty.” However, the man objected, saying the people
are only seeking democracy.

Raffi Hovannisian was later reported to be marching toward
Tsitsernakaberd, accompanied by his supporters.
