January 15, 2013

BELMONT, Mass.-On Thurs., Feb. 7, Prof. Levon Chookaszian will give an
illustrated lecture entitled, “The Life and Art of Arshag Fetvajian:
Master Armenian Artist,” at the National Association for Armenian
Studies and Research (NAASR) in Belmont. The lecture is co-sponsored
by the Armenian Library and Museum of America (ALMA) and NAASR.

NAASR to Host Talk on Master Artist Arshag Fetvajian Arshag
Fetvajian (1866-1947) was one of the most international of Armenian
artists. Although his sophisticated views of late-19th-century
European and Armenian scenery and manners have made him the subject
of some important exhibitions and studies, there remains a need to
take a closer look at Fetvajian, who was born in Trebizond, trained in
Ottoman Turkey and Italy, lived in Austria, Russia, Armenia, Georgia,
England, and the United States, and traveled widely. Unfortunately,
his works are scattered across the world and many are seldom seen
and little known.

Chookaszian’s recent work on Fetvajian is the most comprehensive to
date in presenting a large number of his artworks, accompanied by a
detailed narrative of his life and works in Armenian, Russian, and
English. Chookaszian is the UNESCO Professor of Armenian Art History
at Yerevan State University and one of the leading authorities in the
world on Armenian art. He has taught at Yerevan State University since
1978 and is one of the founders of the department of art history. He
is the author of many scholarly books and articles on a wide variety
of subjects.

This lecture is being given in memory of Arshag Merguerian (1926-2005),
an architect and active member and friend of NAASR for nearly 50 years.

An exhibition of Fetvajian’s work is currently on display at ALMA’s
3rd floor gallery, at 65 Main St. in Watertown.

The lecture begins at 8 p.m. at NAASR, 395 Concord Ave. in Belmont.

For more information, call (617) 489-1610, fax (617) 484-1759, e-mail

Chief Managers Should Sign Contract About Fighting Against Doping

CHIEF MANAGERS SHOULD SIGN CONTRACT ABOUT FIGHTING AGAINST DOPING
By Lusine Shahbazyan

18:42 AMT, January 15

YEREVAN. – The four-year preparation plan for Rio Olympics, and
this year’s program in particular, are ready, spokesperson for the
Weightlifting Federation of Armenia Pashik Alaverdyan told NEWS.am
Sport.

“The last year was very tough. We had participated in the London
Olympics. I would assess our performance as satisfactory. We also
participated in the world and the European championships afterwards.

In total, we got 52 gold, silver and bronze medals,” Alaverdyan said.

Asked what he thinks on the fact that the Ministry of Sport and Youth
Affairs Hratchya Rostomyan commented on the last year Olympics saying
the athletes were trained according to a wrong system, Pashikyan said
he agrees with the Minister, if the latter claimed so.

In addition, they have already prepared the four-year training plan
for the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio and the 2013 program.

Anti-doping program is one of those projects. The chief managers should
sign a contract on taking the obligation to fight against the doping.

Serzh Sargsyan: Armenian-Russian Strategic Partnership To Remain Key

SERZH SARGSYAN: ARMENIAN-RUSSIAN STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP TO REMAIN KEY FACTOR OF ARMENIA’S SECURITY

arminfo
Tuesday, January 15, 18:21

The Armenian-Russian strategic partnership will remain the key factor
of Armenia’s security, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said at
the Jan 15 enlarged meeting at the Defense Ministry. The heads of
legislative, executive and judicial powers, governors and heads of
law-enforcement structures attended the meeting.

“Armenia gives high priority to membership in the CSTO, as it
considerably contributed to establishment of this organization and
trusts a certain niche in ensuring our national security to the CSTO.

We are sure that it is the CSTO that is a real guarantee of our
republic’s security”, he said.

In the meantime, Armenia will continue its close and transparent
cooperation with the North Atlantic Alliance, trying to borrow its
experience in development of the country’s armed forces. The president
pointed out the activity of Armenian peacekeepers in Afghanistan and
Kosovo as a vivid example of close interaction.

Armenia’s Former Pm And Fm Will Create Difficulties For Authorities

ARMENIA’S FORMER PM AND FM WILL CREATE DIFFICULTIES FOR AUTHORITIES – OPPOSITION MEMBER

January 14, 2013 | 14:43

YEREVAN. – Opposition bloc Armenian National Congress (ANC) member
Armenian National Movement Party Board member Hovhannes Igityan is not
of the view that, by running in the forthcoming presidential
elections, opposition Freedom Party Chairman-and former PM-Hrant
Bagratyan and opposition Heritage Party Chairman-and former FM-Raffi
Hovannisian are helping the authorities and are playing into their
hands. Igityan stated this during a press conference on Monday.

He stressed that just the opposite is the case, as Bagratyan and
Hovannisian will create difficulties for the authorities. He added
that boycotting an election is much harder than running in it with a
candidate.

Also, he argued that even though ANC leader and First President Levon
Ter-Petrosyan decided not to run in the upcoming elections, he did not
leave politics at all. Hovhannes Igityan stressed that, owing to
Ter-Petrosyan, Armenia’s body politic is now able to speak more boldly
on a number of matters.

Opposition Candidates May Joint Efforts In Presidential Run-Off – Ar

OPPOSITION CANDIDATES MAY JOINT EFFORTS IN PRESIDENTIAL RUN-OFF – ARMENIA-BASED HERITAGE PARTY REP

14.01.13

Armen Martirosyan, authorized representative of Chairman of the
Heritage party Raffi Hovannisian, one of the candidates in the
upcoming presidential election in Armenia, believes that the opposition
candidates may join their efforts in a presidential run-off.

“I understand the desire for a joint opposition candidate, but I
think it is possible in case a presidential run-off takes place,”
Mr Martirosyan told Tert.am.

He also responded to Aram Harutyunyan, leader of the National Concord
party and one of the presidential candidates, who claimed Raffi
Hovannisian is a government-sponsored candidate.

“I am sure that society understands this is nothing but a process of
discrediting a rival,” he said.

The Heritage party and its leader has been blackmailed several times.

The real government-sponsored candidate was identified later, and
the reasons for his nomination were found out, Mr Martirosyan said.

Pointless is also the proposal by one of the presidential candidates
Andrias Ghukasyan, who called on the other candidates to withdraw
from the presidential race and leave Armenia’s incumbent President
Serzh Sargsyan.

“We could have spoken of boycotting when, after the parliamentary
elections, the political forces would have refused to take their
seats because those elections were not better that other elections. So
boycott should have been set up after the elections,” Mr Martirosyan
said.

“However, we are now witnessing a process of nonparticipation rather
than a boycott. Under the circumstances, the incumbent president
would be re-elected without any problems,” he said.

Mr Martirosyan has no comments on the Free Democrats party’s decision
against supporting Raffi Hovannisian.

“This does not in any way affect Raffi Hovannisian’s election
campaign. He is a really leading candidate from the opposition,”
Mr Martirosyan said.

He refused to say anything about the election campaign. “The election
campaign has not begun. Some tactical steps will be clear as soon as
it begins.”
