PROTEST HELD IN YEREVAN UNDER SLOGAN “RUSSIA, GO AWAY FROM ARMENIA”

Argishti Kiviryan: “For years Russia has been taking such steps to
weaken Armenia”

Baku – APA. A protest against gas price rise has been held outside the
embassy of Russia in Yerevan, APA reports. The protestors held posters
such as “Russia, go away from Armenia!”, “Gazprom, go away from
Armenia!”.

The demonstrators handed a letter to the ambassador, which asks the
embassy to interfere in delaying the discussion of gas prices by the
Public Services Regulatory Commission.

Former presidential candidate Arkady Ghoukasian said that they
appealed to the ambassador, because Gazprom is the state-owned
enterprise.

Head of Armtoday news website Argishti Kiviryan said that the question
is not the struggle against rise in natural gas price: “The question
is about taking into account the attitude of the strategic partner to
Armenia in any issue. This is not the first case. For years Russia has
been taking such steps to weaken Armenia. Suffice it to mention the
“Compatriots” programme. Russia is constantly providing Azerbaijan
with weapons, with which Armenia is at the state of war. Allies don’t
treat to each other so.”

Soccer: Malta Arrive In Yerevan Ahead Of World Cup Qualifier

MALTA ARRIVE IN YEREVAN AHEAD OF WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

Times of Malta
June 5 2013

by Kevin Azzopardi

The Malta squad flew into Yerevan in the early hours of this morning
ahead of their 2014 World Cup Group B qualifier against Armenia
on Friday.

Malta usually travel with an 18-man squad for away games but with the
MFA chartering the flight to Armenia, coach Pietro Ghedin received
the go-ahead to take 22 players.

After checking in at the Marriott Hotel around 6 am, the Malta players
were given the morning off to rest and recover from the journey.

Three experienced players haven’t made the trip for different reasons.

Goalkeeper Andrew Hogg, who turned out for Cypriot club Neon Enosis
Paralimni last season, pulled out of the squad with a back problem
and defender Andrei Agius is unavailable as his Serie C1 club Latina
will face Pisa in the first leg of their promotion play- off final
on Sunday.

Valletta midfielder Ryan Fenech is also absent as he’s getting married
this weekend.

Malta are due to hold a training session at the FC Banants Stadium
this evening.

Malta lost 2-0 at home to Italy in their last qualifier in March,
their fifth defeat in as many matches.

Armenia have three points thanks to their 1-0 win over Malta in the
opening qualifier back in September.

Armenian Scholars At The Center Of Genocide Denial

ARMENIAN SCHOLARS AT THE CENTER OF GENOCIDE DENIAL

Absolut Denial of the Armenian Genocide

BY ARA KHACHATOURIAN

The Turkish Studies Project of the University of Utah convened its
fourth conference on on Wednesday in Tbilisi, Georgia. The conference
is entitled “The Caucasus at Imperial Twilight: Nationalism, Ethnicity,
and Nation-Building (1870s-1920s).”

The Turkish Studies Project at Utah, directed by Prof. M. Hakan Yavuz
of the Department of Political Science, is funded by the Turkish
Coalition of America (TCA), one of the most active U.S.-based groups
promoting denial of the Armenian Genocide (the TCA is also specified
as a sponsor of the conference). The Project was established in 2009
through the TCA’s financial support.

The Turkish Coalition of America has gained notoriety since
its establishment in 2007 for its aggressive promotion of “the
contra-genocide narrative” through funding scholarship that casts
doubt on the facts of the Genocide, pursuing aggressive legal measures
such as its lawsuit (which was dismissed) against the University
of Minnesota and its Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, and
working against U.S. recognition of the Genocide by the U.S. Congress
and Executive Branch.

In light of the TCA’s support of the conference, it is not surprising
to find such names as Norman Stone, Justin McCarthy, Michael Gunter,
and Kemal Cicek among the participants. Each is well known for writings
that attempt to undercut the veracity of the Armenian Genocide.

What is surprising, however, is the presence of a number of Armenian
scholars, both from the Republic of Armenia and from the United States,
including one member of the organizing committee.

[1. Gerard Libaridian (University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Retired)

2. Richard Antaramian (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor)

3. Asbed Kotchikian (Bentley University) 4. Garabet K Moumdjian
(Independent Historian) 5. Ruzanna Tsaturyan & Mkhitar Gabrielyan
(Yerevan State University)

6. Anush Hovhannisyan (Institute of Oriental Studies, NAS, Armenia)
7. Ara Papian (Head of Modus Vivendi Centre, Yerevan, Armenia) 8. Ruben
Melkonyan (Department of Oriental Studies, Yerevan State University)]

Lately, certain elements in Armenian academia have been advancing the
warped notion that by taking part in denialist or denialist-organized
conferences they can counter claims by Turkey and its mouthpieces
whose careers have hinged on historical revisionism. Yet we have seen
no proof of that.

As these Armenian academicians gallivant around the world from one
conference to another, the government of Turkey continues to invest
millions to infiltrate academic circles in the US and elsewhere.

The participation of some of the Armenian scholars on the roster of
the Tbilisi conference is not surprising as they “sold out” a long
time ago. What is more disturbing is the participation of a younger
generation of academicians who fervently argue that their presence at
such conferences bolsters the Armenian position when, in reality, it
goes a long way in advancing Turkey’s decades-long denialist policies.

The Armenian scholars’ participation in the conference does not
end with presenting papers and includes Armenians who are listed as
organizers on the program.

In the absence of efforts by Armenia to produce a new generation
of multi-lingual Armenian scholars, coupled with the laissez-faire
attitude of those who make it a point to be at the forefront of
denialist scholarship, the academic pursuit of the Armenian Cause is
taking a step backward.

Therefore, these Armenian scholars who are participating in these
conferences should be accountable to the public and through the
Armenian press must report on their efforts to “counter” Genocide
denial in these forums. After all, the same scholars took great
advantage of the arena presented by the Armenian press during their
nascent days as burgeoning scholars.

40 Representatives Of "Georgian Mafia" Are Arrested In France

40 REPRESENTATIVES OF “GEORGIAN MAFIA” ARE ARRESTED IN FRANCE

Wed, 06/05/2013 – 15:54
International news

On Tuesday, the French police arrested 40 representatives of the
so-called “Georgian mafia”.

“Ewsru.com” – said the police action was carried out in the cities
of Marseille and Nice, and, at the same time, a number of arrests
have been made in Bordeaux, Lyon and Paris.

Money, gold, weapons, false documents and cigarettes were confiscated
from the arrestees.

Arrestees are suspected in credit card fraud, armed attacks,
robberies, beatings of people, engagement in the trade of counterfeit
goods. Besides that, they controlled Georgian emigrant organization,
being their “protector”.

The investigation began in early 2011. A criminal named Arthur,
who is also arrested, is considered the head of the Georgian criminals.

The criminal case was conducted by the Organized Crime Bureau, in
the structure of which has been set up and now operates a specialized
study of the Georgian criminal activity, “Interfax” informs.

According to the French police, “Georgian mafia” appeared in Western
Europe after the collapse of USSR. It is the most active in France.

Georgian criminal groups are characterized by good organization and
strict ranking.

Staying true to Soviet traditions, Georgian criminal groups are headed
by “thieves in law”, while the bulk of the income is delivered to
Georgia, where their “Godfathers” are.

Post also notes that the French police had already implemented a
large-scale operation to hinder the activities of criminal groups
that came out of the CIS. At that time in Paris and Lyon, 20 citizens
of Georgia and Armenia were arrested, and hundreds of robberies in
cities of France were committed by them, “ITAR-TASS” reports.

Syrian Forces Seize Control Of Strategic Town Of Qusair

SYRIAN FORCES SEIZE CONTROL OF STRATEGIC TOWN OF QUSAIR

June 5, 2013 – 16:52 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Syrian forces and their Lebanese Hezbollah allies
seized control of the border town of Qusair on Wednesday, June 5
dealing a strategic defeat to rebel fighters battling for two years
to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, Reuters said.

Outgunned rebels said they had retreated from Qusair, which lies
on a vital cross-border supply route with Lebanon, after two weeks
of fierce battles that marked the Shi’ite Hezbollah group’s deepest
involvement yet in Syria’s civil war.

A Hezbollah fighter told Reuters the town had fallen in a rapid
overnight offensive, allowing tanks and troops to roll into the
rubble-strewn streets after dawn, with many buildings in the city
center reduced to mounds of twisted concrete.

Bolstered by his Iranian and Russian backers, Assad’s forces have
launched a series of counter-offensives in recent weeks against mainly
Sunni Muslim rebels battling to overthrow him and end his minority
Alawite family’s four-decade grip on power.

A member of a pro-Assad Syrian militia said the military focus may
now move to the northern province of Aleppo, which has been largely
in rebel hands for the last year.

ARG Should Be Nationalized

ARG SHOULD BE NATIONALIZED

Interview with Silva Adamyan, coordinator of Civil Ecological Alliance,
member of Let’s Prevent Gas Price Increase civil initiative

What steps have you made in regard to the gas price increase and what
steps are you planning now?

Since the society is the last to learn this kind of news, it is more
complicated to react. Our first step was to demand a public hearing
but our voice was not heard. We decided to attend parliamentary
discussions. Five representatives of our group were invited to the
parliament but their seats were behind the glass wall so they could
listen but not speak. So they left.

On May 29, a discussion was held at the Public Services Regulatory
Commission. It was necessary to apply to the commission beforehand
to have the permission to attend it. We didn’t know about it so we
missed it. Our goal is to have the voice of the public audible, to
demand a justification for the gas price increase because there is
no agreement that defines the gas price increase.

How long have you worked at ARG?

I have worked there since 2005. I worked with the public and saw the
difficulty with which they pay for gas.

ARG had a serious internal issue of gas losses. We knew where gas
was lost: in the houses of the rich people who don’t want to pay
or pay partially. The rich own different facilities where they use
gas illegally and the money they paid for it goes to the pockets of
several people not to the budget of the company. In order to fill
the budget gaps the company decided to cut salaries of inspectors.

ARG is unable to pay salaries, it is unable to pay taxes. Where does
the money go? Who gets rich on the company’s expense? Who builds
restaurants and runs businesses abroad?

Is the Let’s prevent gas price increase initiative going to put forth
the issue of nationalization of ARG?

All strategic facilities should be nationalized, this is my personal
opinion, ArmenTel, ARG, Electric Networks, mines etc. The state should
have profit from such organizations. Russia has even privatized the
gas pipes. We are going to put forth the issue of nationalization,
at beginning of the ARG, then with the other strategic facilities.

Levon Hayrapetyan

Hetq has finally been able to ascertain what government official is
responsible for ordering two “Bio-Toilets” at a cost of $340,000.

(That’s for the two of them).

The toilets were the brainchild of former Minister of the Economy
Nerses Yeritsyan, an official known for similar flights of fancy at
the taxpayers’ expense.

Yeritsyan now serves as the Deputy Director of Armenia’s Central Bank.

Let’s see what new follies the minister has in store.
