Armenian community celebrates

Members of Atlantic Canada’s Armenian community will share and
celebrate their rich heritage and tragic history during the fifth
Moncton Armenian Festival next month, as they pay tribute to
world-renowned Armenian singer Charles Aznavour.

The Armenian Festival is held every two years and has grown to become
a beacon for persons of Armenian descent from Atlantic Canada and
elsewhere, says organizer Sylvia Kasparian, a native of Paris who now
lives in Moncton.

“We have a Maritime association because there are not that many in
Moncton; we’re only seven or 10 families. But since I started this
festival, it has become very strong in Moncton and brings people from
all over the Maritimes, from places like Fredericton and Moncton, and
so now the centre of it is here in Moncton.”

Kasparian held a news conference at Moncton City Hall yesterday
announcing details of the festival. This year’s theme will be a
tribute to Charles Aznavour, a French singer of Armenian descent who
has earned acclaim all over the world in a career that has spanned 70
years. The festival will include music, dance, poetry, films and a
concert paying tribute to Aznavour at the Capitol Theatre on Oct. 10.

Kasparian said the festival dates back to 2005, when local people of
Armenian descent wanted to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the
1915 genocide. “I realized that few people here knew about Armenia or
the genocide. We had about 80 people at the first event, and when it
was finished, people started asking about the next one, so we started
planning.”

Armenia is a small country located in the highlands near Mount Ararat,
where Noah’s Ark is said to have come to rest. The country traces its
history back more than 3,000 years and has some of the world’s oldest
churches and ancient architecture. But the dark chapter in history is
the Armenian genocide of 1915, where up to a million people were
killed by the Ottoman Empire (present-day Turkey).

She said the festival is a chance for anyone to learn about the unique
culture and history.

The festival will open on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. at the Aberdeen
Cultural Centre with an evening of performances. A series of films
featuring Charles Aznavour will be screened on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7
p.m. at the Jeanne-de-Valois amphitheatre at l’Université de Moncton.
A display of books, records and photos of Aznavour will be open to the
public at Champlain Library at UdeM from Sept. 30 to Oct. 14.

The highlight of the festival will be the tribute concert to Aznavour
at the Capitol Theatre on Thursday, Oct. 10. Performers at the concert
will include Mari-Jo Thério, Sandra Le Couter, Lina Boudreau, Michel
Carpentier and Serge Bédrossian, who performs in 10 languages.
Moncton’s Les Jeunes chanteurs d’Acadie, directed by Nadine Hébert,
and 16-year-old Maxime Robichaud of Dieppe will also be part of the
evening. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the
Capitol box office for $28 (adults) and $18 (students).

U.S. embassy in Yerevan demands punishment for people who beat up
civil activists

YEREVAN. Sept 13

The U.S. Embassy in Armenia issued a statement in Yerevan on Thursday
condemning the attacks on civil activists, including U.S. citizens,
which began on August 22, and calling on the Armenian authorities to
protect freedom of expression in the country.

The statement says that two activists were beaten during the most
recent attack, which took place on September 5. Activists are being
followed and threatened, the document says.

The U.S. embassy called on the Armenian government to condemn these
attacks, conduct investigations, and punish the culprits.

Second Annual `Walk Of Life’ sponsored by the
Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry Walk-A-Thon to Be Held Saturday September 28, 2013

Watertown, MA July 9, 2013 – On Saturday. September 28th, 2013 the New
England Chapter of the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR),
will host its second annual `Walk Of Life’ walk-a-thon, in Watertown,
Massachusetts. Funds raised as a result of the `Walk Of Life” will
support the instrumental work of the ABMDR, which helps Armenians
worldwide survive life-threatening blood-related illnesses by
recruiting and matching donors to those requiring bone marrow stem
cell transplants.
The walkathon will take participants on a 2.2-mile route that begins
at the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center on 47 Nichols Avenue
and concludes at the `Faire on the Square’ town celebration on Main
Street where participants can enjoy the festivities- including local
food, music, and dance.
`Every step taken during the walkathon, brings hope for a long-awaited
bone marrow match for a fellow Armenian struck with a life threatening
disease like leukemia or other blood-related illness — and since the
unique genetic make-up of Armenians, makes it extremely difficult to
find suitable bone marrow matches among the existing international
bone marrow donor registries, the ABMDR’s database serves as a vital
resource when crisis strikes.’ said Dr. Frieda Jordan, President of
ABMDR.
`Whether you choose to walk or sponsor a walker with a monetary
contribution, you can make a huge difference in someone’s life so we`d
like to urge the entire community to support this event.’ said
Mrs. Alvart Badalian, Chair of the New England chapter of ABMDR. To
register for the walkathon, sponsor a walker, or for more information,
interested individuals are encouraged to visit
or contact Tatoul Badalian at 617-331-0426.
About the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry: Established in 1999,
ABMDR, a nonprofit organization, helps Armenians worldwide survive
life-threatening blood-related illnesses by recruiting and matching

Thinking Aloud: The 2015 Centennial of the Armenian Genocide

Thinking Aloud: The 2015 Centennial of the Armenian Genocide

21:43, September 14, 2013

By Christina Najarian

In less than two years, the world will have an opportunity to prove
Adolf Hitler wrong. It was him who, prior to embarking upon a
genocidal campaign in Europe, said: `Who, after all, remembers the
annihilations of the Armenians?’

Unfortunately, 98 years after the onset of the Armenian Genocide, many
countries worldwide still do not recognize the darkest moment of our
history. Perhaps more painfully, the Armenian nation is still
unprepared. With so little time left until the April 24, 2015
centennial, the nation needs a strategy to ensure the recognition of
the Genocide and to address its consequences in the foreseeable
future, both necessary pre-conditions for healing between the two
nations to begin.

The centennial can bifurcate in two directions: it can be a time of
healing or a time of further division. I suspect much will depend on
the state of Turkey’s civil and political societies themselves.
However, Armenians should not rely on the developments in Turkey to
move this agenda forward, as there is simply too much at stake. There
needs to be a new course of action to guarantee that the centennial is
a time of healing.

To date, the Armenian community is still unprepared to ensure
worldwide recognition. I always thought that Armenia’s struggle
towards genocide recognition was stifled by its weak stance in the
global economy and also by weak coordination between Armenia and the
Diaspora. I always wondered, however, if domestic politics too had any
role to play here.

There are currently separate centennial committees working in
isolation to promote genocide recognition before the 2015 memorial
service. These committees include the Pan-Armenian Centennial
Committee put together by official Yerevan and the Armenian Genocide
Centennial Committee set up in Los Angeles by major Armenian-American
organizations on the West Coast. These committees share similar
objectives, but they apparently rarely collaborate. It begs a question
if there is enough drive on both sides to join forces and create a
unified front, a formula that is guaranteed to be most efficient.

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST ‘FIX’ INVESTIGATION AFTER CLAIMS VOTES WERE TRADED FOR CASH

An executive who worked on this year’s final has alleged that they
were contacted by several delegations keen to do dodgy deals

Its scoring system has long been derided as a joke by UK viewers, but
now Eurovision bosses are probing claims some countries bought votes.

An anonymous executive who worked on this year’s final in Malmo,
Sweden, has this week alleged they were contacted by several
delegations keen to do dodgy deals.

Azerbaijan – awarded the maximum 12 points by Malta in 2010, 2011,
2012 and 2013 – stands accused of offering to bribe jury members with
“enough money to live off for a year” in order to get extra points.

The Azerbaijani delegation is also accused of handing out mobile
phone SIM cards to Lithuanian students and paying them to vote.

On the day of the final, Lithuanian website 15min published a
secretly-recorded film which showed youngsters being offered cash by
Russian-speaking men to back Azerbaijan – winner of the 2011 contest.

Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, who came 19th out of 26 finalists in May,
told a French newspaper she overheard Russians asking why they didn’t
get the votes they paid for.

Bonnie said: “The next day the Russians were complaining to Azerbaijan
– ‘why didn’t you give us the 10 points we paid for?’

“Excuse me? We paid for? Is this a competition?

“We haven’t won for 16 years so I didn’t expect to win. But it’s too
bad that politics come into it.

“It should be a songwriting competition not who lives next door to
you. Did you see the way they vote? Unbelievable.”

This week’s revelations in Swedish newspaper Skanska Dagbladet
quoted an executive from an unnamed country’s delegation who had been
contacted by several countries keen to do deals in which they would
trade high points regardless of the quality of the songs.

The insider says they were approached by a member of the Macedonian
delegation about a vote-swapping scheme in the week before the
semi-final.

Another incident took place over a coffee with a member of the
Azerbaijani contingent, who first admitted that the country they
worked for was buying votes from other countries and then offered
the source “enough money to live for a year” if they could arrange
high jury points.

The source added: “I know of at least three other countries that
are doing this kind of agreement backstage, even if they have not
contacted me personally.”

Yesterday Eurovision Song Contest Event Supervisor Sietse Bakker
confirmed that the corruption claims were being investigated by the
European Broadcasting Union.

He said: “Our investigation into the allegations towards Azerbaijan
is still ongoing.”

The Dutchman said that if wrongdoing was discovered, action would
be taken.

“We have a very clear policy on such speculations. First of all,
we always look into the story. If necessary, we investigate further.

“And if we would find actual proof that the rules have been breached,
we will impose firm sanctions and do everything we can to avoid it
in the future.”

But Eurovision experts are sceptical about anything being done about
corruption.

One said: “There is no doubt that this vote-rigging is going on and
the EBU – whose members are the public broadcasters in the countries
taking part – claims it is conducting a fair investigation.

“Now everyone’s waiting to see what they end up unearthing.

“There are worries that they don’t want to rock the boat and are
as toothless as Fifa when it comes to deciding where the World Cup
should be held.”

If this is true it’s a travesty: By Cheryl Baker of Bucks Fizz

You’ll always get people voting for their neighbour, but taking money,
I think that’s shocking, a travesty.

It’s turning a really joyous occasion into something really sordid
and nasty.

Some nations take it more seriously than we do but we shouldn’t come
in the bottom three as we have done so frequently (although whoever
came up with the idea of Engelbert Humperdinck needs shooting).

The ones who have won in the last few years have been good, but if
it’s down to vote-rigging then something needs to be done.

If there is video evidence of people trying to vote-rig, then that
country needs to be banned.

If they sit back and let it happen, it isn’t a competition at all.

The actual show is fantastic, it’s the voting that makes us groan
and lets it down.

HRANT DINK THOUGHT ARMENIAN ISSUE CAN BE SOLVED ONLY IN DEMOCRATIC TURKEY

September 14, 2013 | 12:51

YEREVAN. – The editor of Armenian-Turkish Agos daily Hrant Dink must be
considered not within the scope of his personality and professional
skills, but in the context of Armenian cause and problems of the
Armenian nation, political analyst said.

“A number of events must be organized by the 60th anniversary of
Hrant Dink in order to help understand a man of great thinking,”
political analyst Haykazun Alvrtsyan said.

Turkey, a country trying to look democratic in the eyes of Europe,
always tried to cheat the west, the east and their own people by giving
false promises on equality of nations, speech and religious freedom.

Hrant Dink was confident that the Armenian issue can be settled only
in democratic Turkey, he added.

Hrant Dink, chief editor of the bilingual Armenian-Turkish Agos
newspaper, was killed near his office in Istanbul on January 19,
2007 by Turkish ultranationalist Ogun Samast.

Is Russia Disarming Armenia?

IS RUSSIA DISARMING ARMENIA?

The Armenian government made an interesting decision on September
13 which was published by the minister of energy Armen Movsisyan. He
said that there are nuclear fuel assemblies at the NPP imported from
Russia in 1979 and 1987 which were not usable due to some faults.

According to Armen Movsisyan, further storage of the assemblies at
the NPP causes “certain difficulties”. Hence, an agreement has been
signed with TVEL to export them to Russia. However, this transaction
requires the NPP to have a special license which the government
eventually issued. By the way, the assemblies were sold to Russia
cheaply, at USD 5000 per KG.

Unfortunately, the total weight of the fuel is not published.

Fortunately, it is sold cheaply, not free of charge or in return
for something.

However, the problem is not the price but the transaction itself. In
fact, the assemblies were stored at the NPP for over two decades but
“certain difficulties” arise now. Interestingly, those are certain,
not concrete difficulties. This is at least strange when the government
of Armenia makes a decision based on certain, not concrete reasons.

It is interesting to know when “certain difficulties” arose. Why does
it suddenly become known after several decades that they cannot be
kept in Armenia? How were they kept in Armenia so far?

Interesting developments are taking place around the Armenian NPP.

Earlier in October 2011 the French president Nicolas Sarkozy visited
Armenia and announced that France is ready to help Armenia build a
nuclear plant and is ready to send a working group to Armenia. Nobody
knows whether the working group came or not. A high-ranking French
diplomat dealing with the issues of Armenia and the Caucasus mentioned
in a private conversation that France can help Armenia build a nuclear
plant and helps about waste management but there is no need to expect
essential help in another aspect.

Later a memorandum was signed on American assistance to prolong the
NPP operation by ten years, which means that the prospect of the new
nuclear plant is postponed for at least ten years.

And on September 3 it was stated that Rosatom will help prolong the
operation of the Armenian NPP up to 2026.

And here is the first step: the NPP disposes the unused nuclear
fuel assemblies.

Experts could say whether these assemblies are a threat to or guarantee
of security that might underlie nuclear technology.

Certainly, one first needs to have such technology but the stored
fuel could be half the job done.

It would be interesting to hear specialists discuss whether by means
of removal of assemblies Russia deprives Armenia of something, i.e.

disarms Armenia who is forced to think about nuclear technology after
the Smerch missile deal or eliminated the nuclear risk that Armenia
is exposed to due to the lack of storage facility.

Or did France and the United States happen to make proposals to Armenia
which Russia thwarts by altogether removing the fuel from Armenia?

The decision of the government aroused a lot of questions indeed,
and their answer may be helpful to the public perception of the
current level of security of Armenia.
