At a press conference earlier today, Nareg Hartounian noted that many
officials in Armenia are abusing their powers out of an insatiable
thirst for money.

Hartounian, released from detention yesterday, thanked all those who
came to his defense after he was arrested.

Nareg Hartounian said he and his family have invested in Armenia
out of sincere patriotism and confided in those who have now turned
against them, even to the point of offering false testimony.

He lamented the fact that the case has been dragging in the courts
for about a year with no end, or justice, in sight.

Hartounian, President of the Naregatsi Art Union, lambasted the courts
for their “despicable and unjust” decision to detain him.

Hartounian said that the family’s former legal proxy, Sevak Artzrouni,
had launched a case against them in the hope that his own crimes of
embezzlement wound be drowned out in the ensuing legal morass.

Nareg’s attorney, Lernik Hovhannisyan, told reporters that there are
two cases now facing his client – one brought by the State Revenue
Committee and the other by Sevak Artzrouni.

Hovhannisyan states that Nareg Hartounian had nothing to do with GH
Storage Enterprises while Artzrouni was its director.

Despite it all, Nareg Hartounian told reporters that he hasn’t given
up hope in Armenia and that he will continue the fight for justice.

Georgia Selects Wrong Teacher On Behalf Of Turkey

Turkey’s military assistance to Georgia is being implemented within
the framework of NATO but it gives additional sources to Turkey in
Georgia, military expert Artsrun Hovhannissyan told press conference
today. He said the 1.7 million USD assistance is not of essential
significance but with such private steps Turkey is penetrating deeper
into the Georgian Armed Forces.

“Within the framework of NATO’s membership, Georgia has selected Turkey
as its teacher. The role of our historic neighbor in Georgia is not
only assistance in getting arms but teaching of the armed forces
as well,” Hovhannissyan said, adding that Turkish specialists are
participating in training and upgrading of Georgian military.

“Unfortunately, Georgia forgets that even within the framework of NATO
Turkey cannot be the best teacher. In NATO Turkey is not a “locomotive”
state and it cannot guide a new-comer,” the military expert stressed.

Story from Lragir.am News:

After the appointment of the chief of police Vladimir Gasparyan the
Police set to reveal “old crimes”. Scandalous murders were revealed,
relatives of celebrities were arrested, new sensational revelations
are promised.

Does this have a political context? Judging by the detainees who
are either relatives of oppositionists or members of the Bargavach
Hayastan Party, the revelation of old crimes is a way of settling
personal problems.

Evidence that the “insiders” are not affected is Surik Khachatryan’s
case whose case was dismissed because he hit the women once and not
three times, so it is not beating. Let alone prosecution, but the
Republican Party did not condemn its fellow member. So, not everyone
is equal before the law.

Another obscure case is Narek Hartunyan’s arrest that stirred the
society both in Armenia and Karabakh. He was allegedly arrested
for tax avoidance but apparently someone disliked Narek’s views. He
worked with the opposition and let the hall of Narekatsi Union for
different events.

The revelation of “old” crimes is important, of course, but if Vladimir
Gasparyan considers it to be a police reform he is mistaken.

The goal of reforms must be equality before the law. For the time
being, it is perceived in a distorted manner.

For instance, the church worshipped by Vladimir Gasparyan, speaking
about the equality and man and woman, claims that man is the master,
and woman must be obedient. The church preaches obedience to the
government, entitling it to unanimous decisions, including on the
equality before the law. The Church has replaced the equality preached
by Christ with an interpretation that favors it.

It is nothing that you go to church every day and donate a lot of
money. It is important not to break the rules of coexistence set by
God, the most important of them being equality.

President Sargsyan Hosted At The Mkhitarian Congregation

PRESIDENT SARGSYAN HOSTED AT THE MKHITARIAN CONGREGATION

President Serzh Sargsyan visited the Mkhitarian Congregation at the
St. Lazarus Island in Venice, met with members of the Congregation
and representatives of spiritual and cultural Armenian organizations
of Italy.

At the Church of the Congregation, the President of Armenia lit a
candle for the Republic of Armenia, Armenian Diaspora and Nagorno
Karabakh. According to President Sargsyan, it is a source of pride and
a great honor to announce to the members of Mkhitarian Congregation in
Venice the commencing of the events dedicated to the 500th anniversary
of Armenian book-printing.

In his remarks, President Serzh Sargsyan hailed the activities of the
devotees of the Congregation who carry on their patriotic mission
at the St. Lazarus Island, underscored that thanks to their work
for many years “light has been radiating” from the Island, and that
light should be disseminated and employed. “We cannot be isolated
from the global processes, cannot live isolated from other nations,
we have to preserve in this swiftly changing world our identity,
using opportunities provided by the rapidly changing world and
glorifying our ancestors we should keep strong the Armenian roots of
our youngsters. This is our primary task and, I believe, now, when
the entire Armenian nation has historical motherland, has statehood,
these issues can be solved much easier,” the President of Armenia said.

Speaking about the events dedicated to the 500th anniversary of
Armenian book-printing, President Sargsyan noted that celebrations
are not only tribute to our ancestors but also present a great and
nice opportunity to show others our values and our commitment to
these values. “We, as a state, as representatives of our nation stand
ready to help the Mkhitarian Congregation, all Armenian structures and
those who bring their contribution to Armenia and the Armenian-Italian
friendship,” President Sargsyan stressed. In his words, many would
ask what the Armenian phenomenon is. Is it the world-spread Armenian
Diaspora? The President noted that he is convinced that the Armenian
phenomenon is our ability through the centuries to recognize and employ
everything that is progressive. That very ability stipulated that the
Armenians were the first nation in the world to adopt Christianity as
state religion, invented alphabet, writing and literature long-long
before any other nation and short after the invention of book-printing
had been printing books in the Armenian. Serzh Sargsyan stressed the
importance of the drive and guts which are coming from the ancestors,
to be transferred to our young and to be carried on from generation
to generation.

President Serzh Sargsyan responded also to the questions raised by the
attendees. He noted that he was well aware of the problems faced by the
Congregation, including the issue of digitalization. Serzh Sargsyan
assured that the Government of Armenia will allot necessary funding
to the Congregation to solve that issue. He said that the best way
to preserve that valuable library is to digitalize it, as it is done
in the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts – Matenadaran.

At the Correr museum in Venice President Serzh Sargsyan participated
at the opening of the “Armenia: Impressions of a Civilization”
exhibition dedicated to the 500th anniversary of book-printing in
Armenia. The President of Armenia thanked all those who have brought
their participation to the organization of the exhibition, including
the authorities of the Italian Republic, local administration of
Venice, all state officials and diplomatic staff, those who have
sacredly preserved the relics and, certainly, to the Correr Museum –
one of the best museums in the world – for the implementation of this
great and important project.

Later, President Sargsyan visited San Marco Cathedral of Venice and
listened to the Armenian spiritual music concert.

Afterwards, at the Napoleon Hall of the Correr Museum, President Serzh
Sargsyan will host an official dinner which will be attended by the
specialists of the Armenian studies, who have arrived to Venice from
different countries of the world to participate at the “Armenia:
Impressions of a Civilization” exhibition.

Reconciling The Irreconcilable: Turkish-Armenians Face The Challenge

RECONCILING THE IRRECONCILABLE: TURKISH-ARMENIANS FACE THE CHALLENGES OF STATUS AND IDENTITY

“You are happy, you have Ararat,” says Istanbul-based Armenian Janet
Petrosoglu

After visiting Armenia, Istanbul-Armenian Janet Petrosoglu felt the
controversy of her national identity issues even stronger than before,
against her prior expectation of finding some relief.

“In Armenia I felt that I would keep on living with an internal split.

Turkish-Armenians are identified with Turks here; and we are still
confined to living between three fires: in Turkey we are not treated as
full-right citizens, because we are Armenians; in Armenia we are not
treated as full-right Armenians because we are citizens of Turkey;
and we are chastised by the Diaspora, because we do not voice the
issue of the Armenian Genocide,” she says.

“Nobody understands us,” says 28-year-old Janet, with a choked
feeling of anger and looks at Mount Ararat. “You are happy, you have
Ararat,” she says bluntly, and then smiles, as the contradiction in
the statement she just made dawns at her (as, in fact, the biblical
mountain is on Turkish soil).

Many Turkish-Armenians live with the pain caused by their peculiar
identity and the lack of understanding of their motives and lifestyle.

Keeping silence has very often been a means of survival, and Hrant
Dink (editor-in-chief of Istanbul-based Agos daily, assassinated in
front of his office in 2007) who broke that silence paid with his
life. And the same Dink suffered from the dual attitude: called a
traitor by Turkey, and a spy by Diaspora.

The majority of about 50,000 Turkish-Armenians currently lives in
Istanbul; there are also Islamized Armenians (estimated 200,000)
residing in various parts of the country. Armenia-based specialists
in Turkish Studies presented these figures based on archives data,
according to which some 100,000 women and children were forced
to convert to Islam in 1915, and the approximate number of their
offspring is 200,000.

“Armenians are the biggest yet the most ignored Christian ethnic
minority in Turkey,” says Ozge Genc, Program Officer at the Turkish
Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV), regretting that the
great potential of Armenians is being wasted.

“The main problem of Armenians remains to be the fact that they are
not perceived as true citizens of Turkey. Armenians are treated with
distrust much more than the other Christian minorities here,” Genc
told ArmeniaNow.

Many of the fearful and cautious Armenian community members still
have Turkish surnames and even now, as they confess, often refrain
from speaking Armenian in public and have, traditionally, never voiced
their issues.

“Recently, my ear caught some Armenian words at an Istanbul underground
station. Surprised, I turned around and saw that it was Armenia-based
Armenians speaking. Only then it hit me full-strength the extent of
fear we had been living in for many years, afraid to speak Armenian
in public, afraid to speak Armenian even at church. I am not sure if
we can ever fully overcome this fear,” says Janet.

Fear eventually turned into a habit, and as Arus Yumul, renowned
Istanbul-Armenian sociologist from Istanbul Bilgi University, says
“the language has become important only symbolically; it is not used
but is preserved as a value.”

Even the sermon that follows the liturgy in about 36 churches
functioning in Istanbul is preached in Turkish, so that it is fully
comprehensible to everybody. Many do not even hide that they pray in
Turkish, justifying it by the fact that it’s their ‘everyday language’.

This is an almost impossible-to-overcome controversy for
Turkish-Armenians: they pray in a language the carriers of which
massacred them for praying to that very God they are praying to today;
indeed, an irony of fate.

Controversies are plentiful, but the biggest criticism against
Turkish-Armenians is related to their silent and in some cases even
denialist posture when it comes to the Armenian Genocide.

“The Turkish-Armenians’ silence is often unacceptable to Armenia-based
Armenians, but for years it has been our survival strategy,” Yumul told
ArmeniaNow. “But this status is hard for us too: to the Diaspora we are
like a lost sheep, an outsider; strangers both at home and outside.”

Silence stopped being a survival strategy in the 1990s and Hrant
Dink’s assassination became the biggest breakthrough.

“It’s like Hrant’s death woke everyone up and made them remember their
identity again and drop their fear of being Armenian,” says Yumul.

However many Istanbul-Armenians stress that there is still a long way
to go before they can reconcile the irreconcilable concept of being
an Armenian citizen of Turkey.

“When a year ago, during one of his meetings with the Diaspora,
Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan said ‘a good Armenian is a good
citizen of the country of his/her residence’, it was a real riddle to
us: we can never meet that criteria,” says Janet, half-jokingly, and
pattering like a tongue twister: “If we are good citizens of Turkey,
we will look bad to the Diaspora, and if we try to be good Armenians,
we cannot be good citizens of Turkey”.

quel village visiter ensuite.

Armenia And The Dangers Of Adult Online Content

ARMENIA AND THE DANGERS OF ADULT ONLINE CONTENT

Armenia may boast one of the world’s strongest fatal attractions to
dangerous online locations, according to one recent Russian assessment.

Kaspersky Lab, a Russia-based anti-virus software producer, ranked
Armenia third in terms of visits to malware-containing sites,
after the United States and Oman. The company, which boasts some 300
million self-reported users for its software, claimed that that most
of its users wander into unsafe online quarters after following links
suggested by websites with adult content.

In its Worldwide Threat Assessment report, Microsoft, though, did
not echo that finding. Armenia did not fall into its top-ten list,
although Armenia’s rival, Turkey, ranked in the number-ten spot. The
US led the list.

But, earlier on, Armenia also appeared as an outstanding achiever on a
related ranking compiled by AVG Technologies, an American anti-virus
software manufacturer. The company named Armenia as the third most
dangerous place to log onto the Internet, after Turkey and Russia. On
this list, Armenia is followed by neighbor and sworn enemy Azerbaijan.
