Germany to withdraw Bundeswehr deployment from Turkish Incirlik airbase

17:55, 05.06.2017

The last attempt to settle the conflict between Berlin and Ankara around the right of the lawmakers to visit the strategic Incirlik air base failed, DW reported.

Berlin has no choice but to withdraw the Bundeswehr deployment from the strategic base, said Germany’s foreign minister, Sigmar Gabriel.

Authorities have considered several countries for the relocation of the troops, including Jordan.

“I regret that, but Turkey must understand that for domestic political reasons, we must transfer German soldiers out of Incirlik … In this situation, the Bundestag will ask the government to find another location for the German soldiers in Incirlik,” German FM said following the meeting with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on Monday.

Armenia launches new program to provide better access to treatment of mental disorders

Armenia launches new program to provide better access to treatment of
mental disorders
Yerevan May 30
Ani Mshetsyan. The French Sanofi Group of Companies, the Ministry of
Health of Armenia and the World Association of Social Psychiatry have
united to provide the citizens of the country with better access to
the treatment of mental disorders. The program, with a duration of
three years, aims to provide medical care to people suffering from
schizophrenia and deep depression, is designed to significantly reduce
the level of these diseases. The program is based on the principles of
public-private partnership. According to Jean-Francois Charpentier,
the Ambassador of France to Armenia, who was present at the launch of
the program, noted that the Armenian-French partnership in the field
of healthcare is one of the priorities. He informed that this year,
with the assistance of Business France and the Ministry of Health of
Armenia, the days of France will be held in Armenia, where further
issues of cooperation in this sphere will be discussed and new
horizons for cooperation will open.
As the General Psychiatrist of Armenia Samvel Torosyan informed
previously, the new program is based on successful pilot project,
which is implemented during last 2 years in Yerevan. The basic program
is to be implemented in 6 regions of Armenia and is for treatment of
not only mental abnormalities. The program includes training of 600
specialists for first aid and 180 specialists on mental health.
As Francois Bompart, vice president of access to medicines for Sanofi,
said, "Armenia has a very developed healthcare system, much more
developed than in many other countries with which we cooperate." In
the opinion of the president of the International Association of
Psychiatry, Professor Tom Craig, depression has become a very common
disease and it suffers from 10 to 15% of the population, but more than
80% of them are not considered sick. He noted that depression is not
just a bad mood, it is a problem that makes a person indifferent to
everything. It is most often observed in people suffering from such
diseases as oncology, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, as well as
among women in labor. Therefore, the implementation of the program in
Armenia will have an important social significance.
To note, Sanofi Group of Companies is one of the global leaders in
healthcare and develops, manufactures and markets various medications.
The company according to own estimates by the volume of sales of
medicines takes the 4th place in the world and the 2nd place in
Europe.

ANCA’s Aram Hamparian to testify at hearings on Erdogan-ordered beatings of US protesters
12:10, 25.05.2017

Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Executive Director Aram Hamparian is set to offer testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe as part of a hearing investigating the May 16th brutal beatings of peaceful American protesters by Turkish President Recep Tayip Erodogan’s bodyguards.

Also testifying at the May 25 hearing are Ms. Lusik Usoyan, Founder and President of the Ezidi Relief Fund and Mr. Murat Yusa, a local businessman and protest organizer. Usoyan and Yusa were victims of the brutal assault on May 16th by President Erdogan’s bodyguards.

On the eve of the hearing, Subcommittee Chairman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) commented that “The attack by members of President Erdogan’s security detail on peaceful protesters earlier this month was offensive and showed a deep disrespect for the United States and the value we cherish. Those responsible should be punished as the law allows and I call on our own authorities to make sure such a situation is never again allowed to occur.”

The Subcommittee hearing will follow the full Committee’s consideration of the resolution condemning the attacks and “calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and measures to be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.”

“The ANCA commends Chairman Royce and Ranking Member Engel for introducing H.Res.354, condemning the May 16th beatings of peaceful American protesters by Turkish President Erdogan’s bodyguards,” said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. “Even more than a brutal attack on protesters, this is a fundamental attack on the very principles underlying our American democracy – free speech and freedom of assembly. Sadly, Erdogan is able to get away with this brutality in Turkey – but he should never be allowed to export this repression to America or anywhere else in the world.”

ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian was videotaping live at the scene of the May 16th attack, which took place in front of the Turkish Ambassador’s residence where President Erdogan was scheduled to have a closed-door meeting with representatives of The Atlantic Council, a leading think tank in Washington, DC which receives funding from Turkey. Hamparian’s video showed pro-Erdogan forces crossing a police line and beating peaceful protesters – elderly men and several women – who were on the ground bleeding during most of the attack.

Nagorno Karabakh is a country, not a conflict – Vigen Sargsyan

There is no military solution to the conflicts that exist in our region and the world, at large, Armenia’s Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan has said.

“We proceed from the fact that there is simply no military solution to the Karabakh conflict. We do hope that this is very well understood in Azerbaijan. We do hope that decision-makers in Baku realize that it’s very easy to open the doors to chaos, large-scale military actions and escalation in the whole region, which will be very difficult to stop. This will definitely strengthen the role of terrorist groups in the region and will boost the role of non-regional players, which will try to make use of the situation,” Minister Sargsyan said in an interview with Russian agency.

“Nagorno Karabakh is a country (although unrecognized), not a conflict,” the Defense Minister stated. He stressed that “there will be no settlement unless there is full understanding of this fact.”

“Real people have been living there for over a quarter a century under the conditions of de facto independence. They are responsible for making decisions, forming their government based on democratic principles through free elections,” Vigen Sargsyan stated.

Speaking about the measures taken after the April escalation last year, Minister Sargsayn said “Retooling of the Army is a constant process. We analyze the results and change priorities after any event, even planned military exercises, it’s a natural process.”

“Of course, such analysis is always of a deeper nature after military actions and is based on the assessment of effectiveness of the equipment used by the rival.  We’ve implemented a number of changes in the control system at the line of contact, in the types of weaponry needed to keep the balance and prevent the possibility of such escalation in the future,” he added.

The Armenian Defense Minister stressed that “any violation of the ceasefire regime is a violation of international commitments of the parties – in this case Azerbaijan and Nagorno Karabakh, the signatories of these agreements, and Armenia. Any divergence from the agreements is fraud with threats of escalation.”

“We stand for introduction of mechanisms of monitoring and control over the line of contact. Such agreements were reached at meetings held in Vienna and St. Petersburg under the aegis of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the Russian President respectively,” he noted.

“Unfortunately, yet again Azerbaijan is refusing from commitments, which leaves a negative imprint on the whole process of search for ways of settlement. Every party is making its own choice. But we consider that the situation that exists today (with regular violations of the ceasefire regime) does not provide for perspectives of conflict settlement,” Vigen Sargsyan stated.

President Sargsyan meets Inidia VP

President Serzh Sargsyan received today the delegation led by the Vice-President of India, Chairperson of the Upper House of the Indian Parliament Mohammad Hamid Ansari.

The President welcomed the guests and expressed hope that the official visit of the Vice-President of India will give a new impetus to the centuries-long Armenian-Indian friendship. Speaking about the Armenian-Indian historical relations, President Sargsyan noted that Armenian communities existed in India back in 17-19 centuries and played an active role in India’s social, political, economic, and cultural life, including in Calcutta where Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari was born.

The parties concurred that the millennia-long Armenian-Indian relations constitute a solid base for the strengthening of the interstate ties and expansion of the cooperation agenda in different areas. President Serzh Sargsyan and Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari stressed the importance of high-level visits and active contacts on different levels, including between the legislative bodies of the two countries.

At the meeting, the Vice-President of India conveyed to President Sargsyan the message of the President of India Pranab Mukherjee with the invitation to conduct an official visit to India to discuss the agenda of the Armenian-Indian cooperation, opportunities and prospects for the deepening of the bilateral relations.

Besides the bilateral relations, the parties discussed also the situation in the region, existing challenges, the NK peace process, as well as pressing international issues.

Sinatra songwriter and cigar legend Avo Uvezian dead at 91

– Pianist and songwriter Avo Uvezian passed away on Friday at 91, leaving behind over seven decades of musical history, and a legacy of cigars.

He built a name for himself late in life as a jazz pianist who traveled the world playing with many of the greats, writing for one of them. Avo Uvezian had traveled the world already by the time he hit it big. He played for the Shah of Iran and before that spent a year in Baghdad. His band, the Lebanon boys, toured the middle east until Uvezian found his way to America to attend Juilliard in the 1960s.

By then the accomplished pianist, who had been born in Lebanon in 1926, spoke a dozen languages, including Farsi, French, Turkish, and English. He once told Cigar Journal, “I usually count in Armenian in my head,” in 2015. “I find the best language to swear in is Turkish, and when dreaming of pretty women, French is the best language.”

But in it was the 1960s, and in English, that he finally got to write some melodies of his own. It was probably tough, trying to make the transition from performer to songwriter in his late 30s, but he had some good material. The first song to make it big was an enchanting melody, called “Broken Guitar.” And boy did it make it big.

Uvezian was living in New York, but a friend knew a singer from New Jersey that was looking for new standards. The man’s name was Frank Sinatra. In 1966 Uvezian played “Broken Guitars” for Sinatra, who fell in love with the melody, but convinced Avo to throw out the title and the lyrics. He wrote new ones, and gave it a new title. He called it “Strangers in the Night.”

Uvezian won’t be remembered as the composer. Bert Kaempfert is credited with the melody while many argue the documentation supports Uvezian.

Following “Strangers in the Night” making it big, Uvezian started over in Puerto Rico, filling the hot nights’ air with music. In the ‘80s, he went to Switzerland to have his daughter Christened, and enjoyed his first cigar.

Uvezian was immediately smitten with the smoke, but balked at the price and vowed to make his own brand of quality products. He went in search of someone to make them, and found Davidoff legend Hendrik Kelner in the Dominican Republic. Many of the first cigars sold out of a box atop Avo’s piano, but their popularity exploded. 100,000 in the first year, 750,000 in the first three. Davidoff ended up buying the distribution rights outright in 1995 for $10 million.

He continued to represent the brand though, going on multi-city, international tours to celebrate every year when a limited edition “birthday” cigar came out.

Uvezian’s health had deteriorated in recent years. A car accident added to a growing list of reasons not to travel. Still, he’d managed a few appearances, each with at least a few minutes reserved to play for his guests. He turned 91 just three days ago, and the last “birthday” cigar was released this month.

He’s survived by his wife Nivia, daughter Karyn, sons Jeffrey, Robert and Ronny, and a legacy of rooms where smoke and music filled the air.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan receives Armenia’s Footballer of the Year award

Henrikh Mkhitaryan received today the Footballer of the Year Award at a ceremony held at the Football Academy of Armenia.

“I’m glad to be named best footballer and I believe this will be an additional motivation for me to try my best to be honored with the price once again,” Mkhitaryan told reporters after the award ceremony.

“But I’m not playing for the sake of being named the best player, I’m playing for my nation and doing my best to make Armenia better known to the world. The best footballer’s title is a great honor for me, but it’s not a goal in itself,” he said.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan initially struggled to have much of an impact at Old Trafford, but has earned plenty of praise for his displays for Jose Mourinho’s men in the second half of the campaign.

“It’s impossible to achieve anything without overcoming difficulties. It was not very difficult for me, because I was confident I would have a chance and use it. I just worked hard and waited for my chance,” he said.

“Whether I’m considered an important and influential player for Manchester United is not that essential to me. I’m just doing my best to help the team and to be part of it,” Mkhitaryan added.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is often seen as Armenia’s Ambassador to the world, but the player says it’s not a pressure on him. “I’m trying to think about the game, because if I start thinking what I can and should do for my country, I’ll forget about football. That’s why I focus more on my training, on my performance. Only through my good performance can I show the world what it means to be an Armenian and to present Armenia to the world,” he said.

Mkhitarayn missed Manchester United’s clash against Middlesbrough last Sunday. “I had a small injury that’s why I didn’t play a part in the match although I was on the bench.”

The Armenia captain said, however, he feels good and is fully ready for the upcoming clash against Kazakhstan.

This is the 7th time the Armenia captain wins Player of the Year award and the sixth in a row.

The Manchester United forward was named Armenia’s 2016 Footballer of the Year, collecting 245 points out of 250 possible.

Gevorg Ghazaryan, who plays for Portuguese Maritimo, came second with 56 points. Marcos Pizelli  was placed third.

FC Shirak head coach Vardan Bichakhchyan was named Coach of the Year.
