Hundreds Gather In Advance Of 97th Armenian Genocide Anniversary

HUNDREDS GATHER IN ADVANCE OF 97TH ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ANNIVERSARY

ARMENPRESS
APRIL 16, 2012
YEREVAN

YEREVAN, APRIL 16, ARMENPRESS:Hundreds of people on Sunday commemorated
the 97th anniversary of the Armenian genocide through art, dance and
music outside St. Mary’s Apostolic Church, reports Armenpress citing
glendale News-Press. Verginie Touloumian, 19, said the event – hosted
by the Glendale chapter of the Armenian Youth Federation – was one of
the first in April to “pump up” the youth as the community prepares its
upcoming remembrances and rallies surrounding the April 24 anniversary.

“Even though we’ve mourned for 97 years, now it’s more of a fight to
get justice for all of them,” Touloumian said. “We have survived and
we’re going to live on and we’re going to get stronger and justice
is going to be served to us one day.”

April 24 marks the 97th anniversary of the genocide that lasted from
1915 to 1923 and saw the death of more than 1.5 million Armenians
killed by Ottoman Turks. The Turkish government refuses to recognize
the massacre as genocide.

Shoghak Kazandjian, 20, said that the group would join in upcoming
candlelight vigils, a protest, and a bicycle ride in the San Fernando
Valley called “Cycles of Denial.”

But Sunday’s performances were for “freedom of expression,” she said.

“It’s more than just commemoration, it’s a celebration of our culture,
to show that we survived all these years,” Kazandjian said.

Guitarist Raffi Semerdjian, who performed Sunday with the folk-rock
band Palm of Granite, grew up in Glendale as a member of the Armenian
Youth Federation, which he joined at age 9.

The singer and songwriter has spent months at a time in Armenia,
sometimes with other Glendale members of the federation, working
at youth camps during the summer. He said he has worked many of his
experiences into his songwriting for the band.

“The arts and music collaborating with social consciousness is the best
way to get things done,” Semerdjian said. “I don’t trust politics. I
think music and art are the truth and purest form of waking people
up to change.”

ISTANBUL: Istanbul hosts young talent Sergio Tiempo and Zurich Chamb

Today’s Zaman, Turkey
April 15 2012

İstanbul hosts young talent Sergio Tiempo and Zurich Chamber Orchestra

He’s quite young but already considered one of the most significant
talents of his time. Touching the ivories of the piano when he was
barely more than a baby, he later shared the stage with the masters of
classical music.

Sergio Tiempo, a pianist of Argentinean and Venezuelan origin, will
come to İstanbul for a concert with an international team along with
him. The Zurich Chamber Orchestra, founded after World War II, will
accompany Tiempo on April 19 at İÅ? Sanat Concert Hall. Armenian
conductor Ruben Gazarian will conduct the orchestra, which will
perform pieces by Chopin, Mozart and Dvo·k.

`My mother, Lyl Tiempo, is a remarkable piano teacher who devoted her
life to teaching children with her own wonderful method,’ says Tiempo,
who started playing the piano at the age of 2, in an interview with
Today’s Zaman. `Therefore the house was always filled with children
playing the piano. I suppose I didn’t want to feel left out, so I
asked my Mom to teach me as well and since I was so motivated she
conceded in spite of my age. I’m sure it must have been a lot of work
for her.’

`My sister, Karin Lechner, who is seven years older than me, started
making a professional career as a pianist before me,’ says Tiempo, who
started his professional career at quite an early age. `I would say
that my professional career officially started when I was 14 years old
and I played in a recital series at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
However, I had already been playing sporadically.’

For Tiempo, his entire music career has been a process of learning and
evolution. `The crucial points in my career were marked by musical
encounters which transformed me as a musician rather than particular
career-making events,’ he says. `So I would have to say that my
encounter with Martha Argerich, of course, was one of the most
fundamental, and later my musical connection with Mischa Maisky, and
my collaboration with Christoph Eschenbach, Gustavo Dudamel and
Claudio Abbado, my very few but very moving encounters with Nelson
Freire, just to mention a small handful. Each one of these events
marked a turning point in my musical development as well as in my
career.’ Tiempo particularly qualifies his encounter with Argerich,
one of the most prominent pianists today, as `one of the greatest
gifts’ in his life. `She continues to teach me without knowing it,’ he
says. `She is such an enormous source of inspiration that she doesn’t
even have to be there for her to continue teaching. It would take me
days to explain what it was like and what I was able to take with me.
But just imagine what it would be like if you admired Superman all
your life and one day he came to teach you how to fly.’

Seeing the colors

`There are too many elements involved to describe in a few words one’s
way of relating to music, since it is as vast as one’s relation to
life itself,’ says Tiempo, trying to define his own approach to music.
`But if there is one characteristic that I would underscore it would
be the fact that I always try to play any piece of music as if it was
the first time that I had ever heard it, as if I was writing it
myself.’

This is how Tiempo defines himself. Gramophone magazine describes
Tiempo as `a colourist in love with the infinite variety a piano can
produce.’ `I just see the colors that I imagine in my mind,’ says
Tiempo `and I do everything I can to bring them to life through the
piano. It’s not always easy but if you don’t let yourself see them in
the first place then it is simply impossible.’

For Tiempo, it is too early to decide whether today’s musicians are as
creative as the great masters of classical music like Beethoven,
Mozart and Chopin. `Most of these great composers weren’t considered
that great until later, and often until after their own deaths,’ notes
Tiempo. `There is so much music being written everywhere that only
time and luck can filter the true masterpieces from lesser ones. Also,
it is infinitely more difficult to compose at a time when so much has
already been done! When a masterpiece is created, it is often
something which breaks with what has been done before then and which
speaks to the future, so by definition we are not ready for it yet.’

Tiempo’s personal music preferences vary in a wide range of genres. `I
love jazz and Brazilian music,’ he says. `I also love tango. But I
also enjoy pop, rock, rap, soul, salsa, meringue and so on. I have no
limitations in taste as long as it’s authentically and beautifully
done.’

Despite coming to Turkey for the first time, Tiempo is already
familiar with Turkish musicians. `I love Fazıl Say. He is a wonderful
artist and a very warm and charming person,’ he says. `I am so excited
to go to Turkey. This will be my first time ever in this wonderful
country. I’m just really happy to be going there soon.’

It seems that Tiempo will be very busy in the near future. `I have
many exciting projects waiting for me,’ he says. `Among them, I will
be playing a Ginastera Concerto in Los Angeles with Gustavo [Dudamel]
and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Also, I’m expecting a new CD to come
out in September with tango music that I recorded with my sister, and
another recording project involving Chopin’s `Ã?tudes’ for next year.
Several tours are lined up for me in South America, Asia and Europe.’

Didn’t let them approach Serzh Sargsyan

Didn’t let them approach Serzh Sargsyan

While Serzh Sargsyan was making pledges during a meeting at Arabkir
district, mothers of soldiers killed in the army were standing with
photos of their sons and trying to make their voices heard.

“We don’t believe in you. We believed in you, and saw our sons killed
and the criminals unpunished,” they screamed.

It was then that Serzh Sargsyan’s bodyguards rushed toward the women
and didn’t let them approach Serzh Sargsyan.

Serzh Sargsyan came and left quickly

08:00 pm | April 14, 2012 | Politics

The rally of the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) held in the
Kanaker-Zeytun district, according to the party’s official press
release, was supposed to start at 18:00, but “A1+”‘s crew wasn’t able
to follow up on the rally, even though it had arrived at the venue at
the exact hour. Head of Kanaker-Zeytun district council Arayik
Kotanjyan told “A1+” that before the Republicans came to the district,
leader of the HHK Serzh Sargsyan had also been to the Arabkir district
where his meeting lasted only half an hour and that was why the rally
at Kanaker-Zeytun district started and ended earlier than expected.

According to the HHK’s official press release, the leader of the
ruling party presented a report on the activities implemented in
different spheres in the past couple of years during the rally.

Serzh Sargsyan said he pictured a political party to be a team of
people supporting common values without extra advertising and scandals
and mentioned that the Republican Party of Armenia was exactly that
kind of a party.

During the rally, Serzh Sargsyan spoke about the issue of injustice
that concerns people in the country. According to him, people are
ready to resist any hardship, but are never ready to resist injustice.
“Injustice is the only thing that disappoints people, breaks their
hearts and makes them lose hope and faith. I would like for us to
combine our efforts and reinforce justice in our country. We have to
detain those who misuse office and bring them to justice for their
crimes. You all can see that we are on that road.

I would like for us to combine our efforts and believe more in the
future. That faith can move mountains,” said the leader of the HHK,
adding that it’s possible to change everything and make it better, if
we believe in our efforts, strengths and unity. “Let’s believe to
change,” said the HHK leader.

Chaos at the Casino to feature over dozen Armenian fighters

Chaos at the Casino to feature over dozen Armenian fighters

April 15, 2012 – 19:49 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Chaos at the Casino will feature over a dozen
Armenian fighters with local connections across three different
fighting disciplines – boxing, mixed martial arts and Muay Thai,
Glendale News-Press reports.

In the meantime, most of the principle figures set to compete on the
May 5 card at Hollywood Park Casino can be found under one roof on
Saturday mornings at the Glendale Fighting Club on Brand Boulevard.

An open workout at the GFC on Saturday, April 14 featured several of
the fighters associated with the Hye Fighters community who will ply
their trade at Chaos at the Casino, including GFC proprietor Edmond
Tarverdyan, a former Muay Thai champion, who will use the venue to
make his MMA debut.

“I’m getting in there and the guys I train are fighting on the same
card, so hopefully I can get my fight done with quick so I can go
corner them,” said Tarverdyan, whose pupils Art “Lionheart”
Hovhannisyan (boxing) and Roman Mitichyan (MMA) will have high-profile
fights on the card.

Hovhannisyan and Mitichyan were both present Saturday, along with
fellow Chaos at the Casino combatants mixed martial artists Ara
Muradyan and Sako Chivitchian, boxers Azat Hovhannesyan and Georgi
Karakhanyan and Alfred Keshishyan, Sevak Ohanjanian and Ando Janoyan
competing in Muay Thai.

“Having all my friends that I’ve trained with and fought on the same
cards with, putting them all on the same card, I’ve always wanted to
do that,” said George Bastrmajyan, Tarverdyan’s partner in Lights Out
Promotions, which is putting on the card. “My last card I put on, I
had 5 Armenians, now I have 14. I feel blessed that everybody can be
and will be fighting on the card.”

While many of the fighters at the GFC on Saturday have roots in
various other camps across the region, from Gokor Chivichyan’s Team
Hayastan MMA Academy to SK Golden Boys Wrestling Club and Main Event
gym, among others, the GFC remains a major epicenter of the Hye
Fighters movement and a natural gathering place for training and
sparring among its members.

In an odd role reversal, World Boxing Council light middleweight
contender Vanes Martirosyan, Tarverdyan’s most high-profile boxing
trainee, donned the pads to help Tarverdyan work on his striking.

Tarverdyan then sparred several rounds with Karakhanyan, a veteran of
MMA, who will make his boxing debut on May 5.

Next up in the ring, a spirited sparring session between Keshishyan
and mixed martial artist Jared Papazian that had both men spent in the
center of the ring after several intense rounds.

Hovhannisyan, who has just returned from his first trip home to
Armenia in five years and looks forward to ending an eight-month span
without a fight, also has a lot at stake in his fight.

“I’m hungry for a fight,” Hovhannisyan said. “I’m ready for any fight.
There are a lot of Armenians fighting [May 5], so you have to win.”
