World Cup qualifying: Armenia 1 Italy 3

12 October 2012

Italy have claimed a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Armenia during their
World Cup qualifier at the Hrazdan Stadium on Friday night.
The scoreline may have flattered the Azzurri, however, as they were
given a serious run for their money by Armenia who were level at the
break after Henrick Mkhitaryam cancelled out Andrea Pirlo’s opener.

But second-half goals from Daniele De Rossi and Pablo Osvaldo ensured
Italy took maximum points as they remain unbeaten in World Cup
qualifying so far, topping the Group B table.

Italy found themselves ahead after only 11 minutes, as Hrayr Mkoyan’s
handball in the box was spotted, giving Pirlo the chance to step up
and send Roman Berezovskiy the wrong way from the spot.

But what threatened to be a walk in the park for the visitors never
materialised as Armenia fought their way back creating chances through
Aras Ozbiliz and Artak Yedigaryan.

Armenia’s endeavour was rewarded in the 27th minute as they drew level
following an Italian defensive mix-up.

As Christian Maggio failed to clear effectively, Shakhtar midfielder
Mkhitaryam pounced on the ball and beat Andrea Barzagli’s challenge
before firing home past Gianluigi Buffon.

Armenia pressed for a second but Italy gradually regained their poise
and finished the half the stronger side.

But the hosts refused to bow down and stepped up their attack once
again following the restart as Yedigaryan saw his goal-bound effort
cleared off the line Domonico Criscito.

Buffon was then forced into a quality save as he denied Davit Manoyan
before having to block a powerful strike from Yura Movsisyan as the
Armenians seriously took the game to their opponents.

But just when it looked like Armenia’s pressure would tell once again,
De Rossi stepped up to send the Azzurri back in front, completely
against the run of play.

Pirlo was the architect, bending a glorious cross right onto the head
of the Roma vice-captain, who could hardly miss from six yards out,
crashing his header in off the crossbar.

Not long after Yura Movsisyan found himself in a good position to
level the scores once again, but some good Italian defensive work
prevented him having his chance, with the missed opportunity proving
costly for Armenia as Italy doubled their advantage eight minutes from
time.

This time De Rossi’s free kick was met by Osvaldo, who guided a header
expertly into the far corner to give Italy the breathing space they so
desperately needed.

The result leaves Armenia with just one win in the qualifying campaign so far.

Obama vs Romney: Part 2

Friday 12 October 2012 14:07

The U.S. Embassy gave the opportunity to Mediamax’s correspondent Aram
Araratyan to watch the U.S. presidential election campaign. A special
project was born as a result of his trip to the U.S. and we present
you the second part of it now. You can read the first part here.

Debate

October 3. State University of Denver. The whole America’s attention
is focused on this university – this is where the first and perhaps
the crucial debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney will take
place.

Morning newspapers carried screaming headlines like “Duel in Denver”
and apart from forecasts, they recall the deeds of the past – previous
debates between the U.S. presidential contenders which proved crucial
or exerted significant impact on the outcome of the election campaign.

1960 – the first TV debates, young and charming John Kennedy wins
Richard Nixon. 1976- Gerald Ford yields his positions to Jimmy Carter
stating in the very swing of the Cold War that “there is no Soviet
domination” in the Eastern Europe. 1984 – Ronald Reagan demonstrates
how to win with a single phrase stating in reply to the remark
concerning his elderly age that he doesn’t “exploit, for political
purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience”. 1992- George Bush the
Elder takes a false step demonstratively looking at his watch at the
critical moment of his debates with Bill Clinton. 2000- Albert Gore
conspicuously winks and heavily sighs during the speech of his
opponent George W. Bush. The audience doesn’t accept such an
extravagant conduct…

The above mentioned is meant for highlighting the importance of the
debates. Supposedly, only twice in the history did the debate
dramatically change the process of the election campaign but its
significance and weight are undoubtedly considerable. Not only should
one appear prepared excellently in various aspects at the debate but
also not forget about the humor, appearance and body language. The
candidates have 90 minutes exactly to try to convince millions of
Americans.

Romney stayed in Denver since October 1 while Obama arrived only on
the day of the debates. Romney prepared for the debates for all the
recent months whereas Obama spent much less time on it. Each of them
had his own sparring, a partner for practicing. For Obama, it was
former presidential candidate in 2004 John Kerry.

For several hours preceding the debates, the university campus was
already crowded – the so-called DebateFest is in the full swing here.
People, the majority of them being students, sing, dance, play games
and just have fun. Right here you can also see tables with various
symbolic and “advertisement”, not necessarily calling on voting for
either of the candidates. For instance, you can see a table devoted to
safe sex or autistic people next to the table with Obama or Romney
symbols.

There is a huge media center called Spin Alley specially for
journalists. About 3500 journalists from all over the world and
numerous experts, lecturers and professors work here. Looking closely,
one can see familiar faces, for example, New York City Mayor Rudy
Giuliani.

The start of the debates turned out to be romantic. Barack Obama
turned to his wife Michele seated in the hall noting that he became
the happiest man in the world 20 years ago as Michele agreed to marry
him. In his remark, Mitt Romney ironically noted that celebrate the
20th anniversary with him “is the most romantic option”. After that,
the candidates focused on the debates. The agenda included serious
items – unemployment and workplaces, budget deficit, taxes and
healthcare and public administration. Obama’s and Romney’s views
dramatically differ in almost all the range of issues.

Everybody knows the results of the debates. Mitt Romney won them- he
was more decisive, aggressive, energetic and confident. No doubt, his
speech was much more impressive than the one with supporters at the
rally a few days ago. Vice versa, Barack Obama looked tired and
indifferent. The President who is usually very energetic seemed to be
a man who got awfully bored in the middle of the long-awaited and
important event and as though he would like to finish it all as soon
as possible. The months of preparation yielded their results and it’s
not that hard to conceive of Romney as President as a couple of days
before. Romney freely and confidently used figures while Obama
periodically went into lengthy explanations (many people mention it to
be his main weak point). Romney confidently looked his opponent in the
eye almost all the time whereas for some reason, President Obama
looked down during the speech of the republican and even from time to
time nodded as though agreeing with his rival.

A couple of hours after the elections, CNN broadcasts results of the
poll on the site. The question is simple: who won the debate? The
results speak for themselves: Romney – 67%, Obama – 25%. Obviously,
Barack Obama isn’t likely to win easily before October 3, as he was
forecasted to do. Mitt Romney felt “the smell of blood” and now he is
sure to go to the end.

Israel Shamir: Turks, Cease Fire!

Turks, Cease Fire!
by ISRAEL SHAMIR
Erdogan’s Janissaries
Weekend Edition October 12-14, 2012

In the Middle Eastern corrida, the moment of truth is approaching
fast. Assad’s Syria is running around the arena like a wounded bull,
fraught and worn down by a year of cruel strife. Banderillas of
mujaheeds stick out of his broken hide. The public, the Europeans, the
Americans, the Gulf rulers call: Kill him! And the Turkish matador
steps forward, pulling out his sword. His cannons rain death on Syrian
slopes; fire and lead storm consumes the hills. Erdogan is preparing
to deal last blow to his exhausted neighbour.

`Don’t do it, Erdogan! Desist!’ – cry thousands of Turks demonstrating
against the bloody war. Syria was a good neighbour of Turkey: Assad
did not allow the Kurdish separatists to open the second front against
the Turks, he delivered Ocalan to their hands, he did not turn the
loss of Antioch into a national cause, he kept Israeli army at bay, he
bore the brunt of war in Lebanon, supporting the brave warriors of
Hezbullah. Post-Assad Syria will be worse for Turkey.

If Erdogan’s Janissaries will deal treachourous strike to Syria, and
cause its collapse, a terrible whirlwind will ensue, and it will
engulf Turkey as well. Inevitable massacre of Syrian Christians by the
mujaheeds with Turkish support will remind the world of so many
forgotten Christian villages and cities smashed and depopulated by the
victorious Turks. The ghosts of slaughtered Armenians and Greeks will
emerge from the lanes of Smyrna and the shores of Van. From broken
Syria, Kurdistan will definitely come to being, reducing Turkey to the
size envisaged by the Versailles Conference.

Saudis will be the great winners of the war, not the Turks. The dream
of Caliphate will be centered on the Gulf, not on the Bosphorus. With
their own hands, the Turks prepare their own defeat.

Good relations with Russia will suffer immensely. Russia has called
upon Turkey to restrain its actions and reminded of terrible
responsibility to be born by the aggressor. Russia wants Syria to find
its own way. Russia is the biggest trade partner of Turkey; thousands
of Turkish engineers and technicians work in Russia, thousands of
Russians holiday in Turkey.

Moreover, the relations of Russia and Turkey are important beyond
practical mercantile considerations. These two great countries are
heirs to one greatest Eastern Roman, or Byzantine Empire. The Ottomans
inherited her main body that was broken in 1918 into many splinters;
her most important offshoot, Russia inherited her spirit and faith. If
you seek symmetry, think of the Western Roman Empire: her main body,
Western Europe, was fragmented and is now in the process of being
united, while her most important offshoot, the United States of
America, inherited her imperial spirit.

Russians and Turks are very similar to each other; the Turks are
`Russians in shalvars’, they say. Both nations went through
modernisation and Westernisation, but preserved their own identity.
Both nations passed through violent denial of faith from 1920s to
1990s, and rediscovered their religious leanings afterwards.

The Russians see the Turks as equal human beings and feel empathy to
them. The leading Russian historian Lev Gumilev exalted the Russian –
Turkic comradeship-in-arms that broke the wave of Western Crusades in
13-14th Centuries. In modern times Vladimir Lenin gave a hand in
friendship to Mustafa Kemal and forfeited all Russian claims to
defeated Turkey, for he expected Turkey to sustain its historical role
of protector of the East. The Russians and the Turks must remain
friends. If the Russians ask Erdogan `Do not do it!’ he should listen.

The Russians are not obsessed with Bashar al Assad, nor is he their
best friend. He came to power in year 2000, but his first visit to
Moscow took place only in 2005, meanwhile he frequented Paris and
London. Russian trade with Syria is not too big, either. Israeli PM
Netanyahu promised Russian President Putin to protect Russian
interests in Syria in case of the rebels’ victory. The Russians aren’t
selfish; they insist on peaceful transformation, in accordance with
Syrian people’s will, and they do object to the rape of Syria as
envisaged by Saudis and the West.

The relations of Turkey with Iran will suffer. For Iran, Syria is an
important partner, a window to the Mediterranean. Victory of
pro-American forces in Syria will close the window. Iranians will be
mighty upset with Turkey. It is not a good idea to spoil these
relations.

The people of Turkey do not want war with Syria; even Turkish generals
are not keen to unleash the dogs of war. Only pro-NATO Westernisers
within Turkish leadership desire to overturn the legitimate government
in Damascus. Other Turks remember that doing Western bidding never led
Turkey – or Russia – to any good result.

I understand why the Turkish leaders decided to embrace and support
the rebels a year ago: they were misled by the Western-cum-Gulf spin
of Syrian government’s forthcoming speedy collapse, and they wanted to
be on the winning side. But after the noisy media campaign, reality
came and debunked the propheciers: despite billions of dollars wasted
by Qatar, Saudis and the West, despite heaps of armaments transported
through Turkish-Syrian border, the Assad regime stands fast and still
enjoys enough popular support.

This is the right time for reassessment. In every game, there is a
moment for it, when you decide not to throw good money after bad one.
And reassessment started, with many Turks calling to write off the
losses, stop supporting the rebels and try to restore normalcy under
the good slogan `with neighbours – no problems’. The New York Times
reported a few days before the flare-up of the U-turn in Turkish
minds: people are disappointed with flow of unruly Syrian mujaheddin,
with lawlessness, with flood of refugees, with growth of Kurdish
resistance. Turks are known for their daring U-turns. In 1940, they
sided with Germany being certain of the Reich’s victory, but in 1944
they understood that the USSR is winning, and changed sides. Now is
the time to change sides, to go back to strict neutrality, to stop
support of the rebels and seal the border, said the people to the New
York Times reporter.

But people overseas who planned the Syrian Disaster, drew different
conclusion of this turn of mind: they decided to speed up their
operations and provoked the artillery exchanges. We do not know who
aimed the mortars at the Turkish border villages: whether it was done
by the Syrian Army in the heat of the battle, or by the rebels trying
to trigger the war. The Turkish Yurt newspaper reported that the shots
were fired from the NATO weapons recently given to the rebels by the
Turks: `Erdogan’s Government Handed over the Mortars to Armed (Free
Syrian Army) Groups in Syria which Shelled Akcakale Town’ – they
headlined. The ammunition was reportedly NATO ammunition 120 AE
HE-TNT. Even the New York Times admitted that it’s unknown who’s
responsible for mortars landing in Turkey. A German TV canal ZDF
reported: mortars were launched from territory controlled by FSA
fighters. A leaked video clip said they admitted responsibility for
striking Akcakale and killing five Turkish nationals.

But it is possible that the shells were fired by the government troops
who shot at the rebels and the Turkish villagers became innocent
victims. Provided the Turks allow the rebels to operate freely on
their territory, it is quite possible.

It is still not a good reason to begin war. Let us remember 2010, when
the Israelis murdered mafia-style nine unarmed Turkish volunteers on
board of Mavi Marmara. This was brutal murder at full daylight, filmed
and undoubted. Erdogan threatened to send Turkish Navy to the shores
of Palestine and relieve Gaza by force. Now, did he do it? No, he did
not. Now he is brave to shoot at tired and devastated Syria; but why
he was not brave enough to deal with Israel, like the Syrians did?

Now Israelis hope Erdogan will help the rebels to destroy Syria; they
asked Turks to coordinate joint action with them. So instead of
punishing Israel, Erdogan ends with doing Israel’s desire.

I remember snowy February 2003 in Istanbul, when I came to argue for
banning the US army passage to Iraq. I told them that `the long
standing Zionist plan is being realised. First, Iraq must be
destroyed. After that, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria, until all the former
Ottoman Empire and its neighbours from Pakistan to Africa are turned
into a Zone of Special Interests for Israel, policed by the Turks.

This plan was outlined by General Sharon many years ago, re-formulated
by the Zionist Neo-cons Richard Perle and Douglas Feith in 1996, and
is now upheld by the Wolfowitz Cabal, the people who run the US
foreign policy. If it will be done, it will have been done with the
connivance of Turkey, of its `Islamic’ government.

I am sorry for you, friends. You were shepherds of the Middle East,
now you help the Wolves. You were the rulers of men, now you have
become the servants of your masters. You were the protectors of Islam,
now you are about to allow desecration of al-Aqsa Mosque.’

What I said then, became true; nothing good came out of Iraqi war. And
now, I can say it again: nothing good will come out of Syria War.

The stories of multiple massacres are often just stories. Wikileaks
published a Stratfor report saying: `most of the [Syrian] opposition’s
more serious claims have turned out to be grossly exaggerated or
simply untrue.’ And the events on the ground are certainly not worse
than whatever was done to Kurds in Turkey, and the Turks probably do
not cherish a R2P intervention in their country.

My advice: do not try to finish off Syria, return to your policy of
strict neutrality, cease fire and logistic support of the rebels. Let
the Syrians sort out their problems themselves, without foreign
intervention.

Osce Office Promotes Community Polocing In Armenian Schools

OSCE OFFICE PROMOTES COMMUNITY POLICING IN ARMENIAN SCHOOLS

Four days of activities organized by the OSCE Office in Yerevan and
the Armenian police as part of its “Safe School’ initiative concluded
today in Yerevan.

The activities, held in schools 189 and 130 in the Arabkir and
Mashtots districts of Yerevan, were aimed at addressing security
problems in schools, such as drugs and smoking, road safety, cases of
violence and enhancing co-operation between the police and the local
community. This is a follow-up from an OSCE-supported study visit to
the Netherlands in April for a group of Armenian police officers to
learn about the Dutch experience of police-school partnership.

“Community policing means close co-operation between the police and
local people, identifying problems and areas of concern, finding
effective solutions to community problems and rendering quality
policing services. Raising awareness among the younger generation about
this new policing method will help them understand the positive changes
that it can bring to society,” said Lilian Salaru, Politico-Military
Programme Officer of the OSCE Office in Yerevan.

The events included meetings between district community policing
officers, school students, faculty and parents as well as presentations
on the community policing concept. Prior to the initiative, a survey
was conducted among students to identify their most pressing security
concerns. Its results were presented and discussed in school meetings.

Nico van Ooik, a community policing expert from the Netherlands, said:
“It is important for community policing officers to influence citizens
and co-operate on security issues. This is a good preventive mechanism
especially for the younger generation so that they do not get involved
in unsocial behaviour such as drug and alcohol abuse.”

The OSCE Office in Yerevan has been supporting the introduction
and implementation of the community policing model in Armenia for
several years now, as part of efforts to establish democratic policing
practices in Armenia. The community policing was launched throughout
Yerevan in June.

Italian Parliament To Draft A Bill Officially Considering April 24 A

ITALIAN PARLIAMENT TO DRAFT A BILL OFFICIALLY CONSIDERING APRIL 24 AS ARMENIAN GENOCIDE COMMEMORATION DAY

ARMENPRESS
12 October, 2012
YEREVAN

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 12, ARMENPRESS: Hovik Abrahamyan, the President
of Armenian National Assembly, hosted the members of Italy-Armenia
Parliamentary Friendship Group from the Italian Chamber of Deputies
and the Senate of the Republic. They were presenting the main fractions
operating in the Parliament. As Armenpress was informed from NA press
and informational department, Armenian NA president greeted the guests
and highly evaluated their visit to Armenia noting that it was the
first one on the level of friendship groups. He assured that it would
be a new impetus for the development of Armenian-Italian relations
and especially the interparliamentary ones.

Referring to the Armenian-Italian cooperation Hovik Abrahamyan has
noted that there are great prospects for the development of political,
economic and cultural cooperation. He believes that it is important to
use all the possible formats to develop the interparliamentary relation
between Armenia and Italy. The head of Italy-Armenia Parliamentary
Friendship Group Sandra Jampa expressed her gratitude for the
invitation to visit Armenia and highly evaluated such meeting for
the development of interparliamentary and intergovernmental relations.

Mrs. Jampa highly evaluated the investment of Armenian nation in the
European, especially in Italian culture, science, economy and other
spheres. According to her, Armenians have left their paths in the
European culture and economy for centuries. “Now its time for Europe
to pay back for your investments” noted Italian deputy. Sandra Jampa
has informed that Italian Parliament has a new bill according to
which April 24 will be officially considered as Armenian Genocide
Commemoration Day.

During the meeting interlocutors referred to regional issues,
Armenian-Turkish relations and NKR settlement issue. NA President has
mentioned that Azerbaijani atmosphere which is full of hated toward
Armenians is a reasonable and sufficient reason for international
community to acknowledge that Artaskh can never be a part of such
country, which is proclaiming Safarov’s type as a hero, and with this
action Azerbaijan once again threatens the fragile regional security,
violate the human rights guaranteed by international instruments and
present its policy which is leading the peaceful negotiations over
NKR settlement issue to the deadlock.

“Baku has turned the hatred towards Armenians to a state propaganda,
bringing it to a dangerous level. It’s not only our valuation.

International institutions have also set an alarm. We remain faithful
to a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict” stressed
Hovik Abrahamyan.

NA President thanked Italian Deputies for refusing the bill which
was suggested by Azerbaijan over NKR issue. Sandra Jampa noted that
Azerbaijani bill was refused by the Italian Parliament because it
didn’t match to the Italian position over this issue. Other issues
were also discussed during the meeting.

Discord In Congress: 7 Anc Members Disagree On Every Issue, Official

DISCORD IN CONGRESS: 7 ANC MEMBERS DISAGREE ON EVERY ISSUE, OFFICIAL SAYS

PanARMENIAN.Net
October 12, 2012 – 20:33 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Armenia’s geo-political location is of great
significance, head of Constitutional Law Union said.

“The political regimes exerted in Armenia may bring about power shift
or Orange Revolution,” Haik Babukhanyan said, deeming the disagreements
between the Heritage and Free Democrats parties unimportant.

As for Armenian National Congress (ANC) opposition bloc leader’s recent
position, he noted, “Levon Ter-Petrossian has exhausted himself. He
has nothing new to say. Even his MPs differ in their standpoint. 7
ANC members disagree on every issue.”

Dwelling on former foreign minister Vartan Oskanian’s possible assuming
the presidential post, Mr. Babukhanyan dubbed him a representative
of a non-democratic regime, who did nothing to win public trust.

“Oskanian’s representing a party with a large electorate doesn’t
prove his ability to win all those votes,” he said.
