FRENCH MP SAYS VISIT TO GENOCIDE MUSEUM IMPRESSIVE

April 24, 2013 – 18:29 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – French MP, France-Armenia parliamentary friendship
group member Valerie Boyer visited the Genocide Museum-Institute,
where she left a note in the memory book.

“The museum is impressive. We are for the criminalization of the
genocide denial in France and in all of Europe,” the French MP wrote
in the book.

As a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter was told in the museum-institute, Ms.
Boyer further laid flowers at the Genocide memorial complex.

It’s noteworthy that the French MP arrived in Armenia to participate
in the April 24 commemoration ceremony for the Genocide victims.

Yesterday, on April 23, she expressed regret that the Genocide bill
was turned down twice; however, she promised to find another way to
promote the adoption of the bill, with the support of MEPs.

HAK: Regime Unmasked Its Face

HAK: REGIME UNMASKED ITS FACE

11:54 AM | TODAY | POLITICS

The Armenian National Congress (HAK) has issued a statement condemning
yesterday’s assault on a journalist of Yerevan-based Ilur website
during a campaign meeting with incumbent mayor Taron Margaryan, who
tops the candidates’ list of the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK)
in the May 5 municipal election.

“On Tuesday, Hakob Karapetyan was assaulted by a larger group of
men in Yerevan’s Nor Nork District who banned him from shooting
the meeting. Margaryan’s loyalists first demanded that the ‘alien
journalist clear off’ then they attacked him, kicking and tearing
his clothes. They took away the camera from the journalist and erased
the record. Karapetyan suffered injuries to his body.

The journalist managed to photograph the assailants. One of them was
identified as Aram Papayan, the organizer of the campaign meeting,
a HHK candidate in the upcoming City Council election. Throughout
the incident the police officers stood nearby without interfering
with the attack.

HAK strongly condemns the violence against the journalist and says it
unmasks the true face of the regime led by Serzh Sargsyan and mayoral
candidate Taron Margaryan. We hope that journalists, human rights
activists, international organizations will express their opinion on
the villainous assault,” HAK said in the statement.

Disgrace By Armenians

DISGRACE BY ARMENIANS

Struggle Must Be Struggle

The activities for international recognition of the genocide of 1915
are referred to as struggle. But is there real struggle as such? The
Diaspora Armenians and Armenian NGOs have not outlined the format
of these activities but have approved some rules which favor the
international community.

In this aspect of politics, Armenia and the Armenian NGOs posture as
if the world is neutral and indifferent to this issue but in reality
we are in an extremely aggressive environment full of different
organizations and professions which receive funding for uncovered
anti-Armenian activities.

The problem is not only the recognition of the genocide but split
and disregard of Armenian interests. People who deny intensively the
genocide occupy important places in politics, science and PR. There
are a lot of civilized and legal methods of struggle against such
people and organizations but nobody uses them. Not struggle but some
passive and controllable work is done.

As to the Russia-based Armenian organizations, they are disgrace,
and I wish they did not exist at all. With their toothless style new
conditions emerge which the Armenians either do not feel or are unaware
of. One can successfully continue with this style for another 100
years which worries very few people while different functionaries of
the nation make a lot of money by working on and against the Armenians.

James Nixey of Chatham House, U.K. deals with
Russian and Central Asian affairs. Let him deal
(+44 20 7957
5716). However, it turns out that he deals not only with this. Upon
the approval of the Chatham House leadership he controls possible
moves and connections of Armenian experts in this institution.

The issue is put clearly (there is a recording): “Armenian experts
can contact Chatham House experts only if they speak positively about
Turkey and Azerbaijan, otherwise it is impossible.” In addition,
all the Chatham House experts who can contact about this topic must
notify about requests for a meeting with James Nixey. This is not a
marginal institution but a respectable British think-tank.

Ostensibly, Chatham House has been in genre crisis for a long time now,
most experts listed on the website of the institution are titular
experts, they are not on the payroll. The institution must live on
something so it needs sponsors and it has them. This model is highly
popular in democratic countries, James Nixey successfully recruits
Armenian experts who wish to play the pro-Turkish game, including
one of the more or less successful Armenian presidential candidates
who speaks good English.

But are there people who could oppose decisive steps to anti-Armenian
activities in the U.K.? It is a group of conformists affected with
marasmus led by a fantastically rich lady named Odette Bazil who is
far beyond the Balzac age, cares only for herself and has thwarted
alternative work by literally buying this niche. This is real comedy.

In addition, the Ministry of Diaspora favors legitimacy of these
people.

Here is the general scheme of “struggle” for the recognition of the
genocide. In other countries the situation is far more outrageous.

While about 25,000 people live in Great Britain, the Armenian
communities are far more populous in other countries.

It should be noted that the ongoing “struggle” for the recognition of
the genocide occurred in a traditional Armenian community. Internet
and the rest have destroyed the community, and it is necessary to
understand the new social and political setting in the Diaspora while
the Armenians continue to appeal against the previous historical
period.

“Struggle” supposes different potentials and not conformism. Stop
cleaning your nails, take off your ties and put on cheap jean jackets
and pants. You might be able to get out of this humiliating and funny
situation. Our nation and interests are offended and ignored every
day with your help. Isn’t it time to change your style?

Books About Armenian Genocide Presented In Yerevan

BOOKS ABOUT ARMENIAN GENOCIDE PRESENTED IN YEREVAN

ARMINFO
Wednesday, April 24, 14:09

“Ravished Armenia” and “Genocide of Armenians Through the Swedish
Eyes” by Goran Gunner, which were published in English in 2013 with
financial support of Ameria group, were presented yesterday in Yerevan.

Goran Gunner is a Theology professor at Stockholm University,
specialist in missionary teachings and an editor-in-chief of “Swedish
Church” popular edition.

“Ravished Armenia”, one of the first documentary memoirs of an
eyewitness of Armenian Genocide tells about a girl from Chmshkatsag,
Armenian populated town in the Ottoman Empire and gives a detailed
account of the terrible experiences she endured during the genocide.

At the age of fourteen she was beaten and tortured in harems of Turkish
officials and Kurdish tribesmen. However, she managed to escape. First,
she moved to Norway and finally settled in the USA.

“Genocide of Armenians Through the Swedish Eyes” reveals the positions
and evidence of the missionaries on the Armenian genocide.

On April 24 the Armenian people commemorates the victims of the
first genocide on the 20th century that was committed in the Ottoman
Empire in 1915. Genocide of Armenians has been recognized by most
of the United States as well as by dozens of countries, including
Canada, Argentina, Switzerland, Uruguay, Russia, Belgium, France,
Poland, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Greece, Cyprus, Vatican, Sweden,
Lithuania.. The European Parliament passed a resolution recognizing
the fact of Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Turkey on June 18 1987
and demanded the Council of Europe to exert pressure on Turkey in
order that country recognizes the Armenian Genocide. Turkey still
denies the genocide of 1,5 million Armenians in 1915-1923.

PRESS CLUB” CYCLE: COPYRIGHT, ETHICS AND REPRODUCTION

On April 22, another program of
“Press Club”
cycle, dealing with journalistic ethics, went on “Yerkir Media” TV channel.
The weekly TV cycle is produced by Yerevan Press Club with the support of
Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

The “Press Club” participants considered how consonant with the copyright
legislation and professional ethics is the demand of some media to get a
written permission for full or partial reproduction of its materials. This
demand lately appeared in the rules of use of materials of
“Armenpress” and News.am ,
and provoked the topic of the talk show. Views on the issue were expressed
by the “Press Club” discussants, Harutyun Mkrtchian, correspondent of
eMedia.am , member of the Facebook group “For Fair
Journalism”, and journalist, publicist Harutyun Harutyunian. The experts
were Melanya Barseghian, observer of “Aravot”
online, Kristineh Hambarian, specialist of the Department of Copyright and
Related Rights of the Agency of Intellectual Property of RA Ministry of
Economy, Gevorg Hayrapetian, lawyer of Freedom of Information Center, and

CORRESPONDENT OF ILUR.AM ASSAULTED AT RPA’S CAMPAIGN MEETING

On April 23, at about 17.30 in Yerevan, at the campaign event of the
Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), running in the Yerevan Council of Elderly
elections (incumbent Mayor Taron Margarian heads the electoral list of the
party) an incident occurred with Hakob Karapetian, correspondent of iLur.am
. On the same day, iLur.am published
an editorial ( “Member of the Council
of Elderly from the RPA Ashot Papayan Beats iLur.am Correspondent”), where
the incident is described in the account of Hakob Karapetian. According to
iLur.am, the journalist was shooting on a videocamera the event organizers
distributing balloons to the children, when some people approached him and
tried to find out who he was and what he was doing there. The journalist
answered that he “was carrying out his lawful professional duties”, and to
which one of the men told him: “Now do you want us to threat you by our
laws?” The skirmish drew the attention of one of the organizers of the
event, who was in a blue jacket with stripes. The man came up to Hakob
Karapetian and hit the journalist swearing at him. As iLur.am stressed, it
later identified the assaulter – Ashot Papayan, a member of Yerevan Council
of Elderly from the RPA, who is again running in these elections by the RPA
electoral list . The other participants of the skirmish joined the man and
started to pull and give blows to the journalist. Then they took away the
videocamera from Hakob Karapetian, and not long after returned it, but with
deleted files. According to iLur.am, a police major, who was present at the
site, did not intervene in the incident. However, he told the journalist
that he had called the police station. When the event started and Hakob
Karapetian resumed the shooting, somebody from the police called him,
recommending to address the police officers present at the site, and report
about the incident. In reply, Hakob Karapetian told them that he was
assaulted in front of hundreds of people, including the police major, and
nobody interfered. Now that he was standing at a place, where there were a
dozen of police officers, somebody told him that he should be the one to
come up to the police officer. Thus, Hakob Karapetian dropped the call.

Later, on the same day, April 23, iLur.am published another piece about the
incident , which contained the photos
of the man in a blue jacket and the police major, who was at the site of the
incident. In the April 24 article,
“The 34-Years Member of the Council of Elderly, Who Beat the Journalist, Is
a University Student Since 2006”, iLur.am provided the details of Ashot
Papayan’s biography.

On April 24, the RA Police stored a communication on its website,
“The Circumstances Are Being Investigated”.
The police report, particularly, stressed that Hakob Karapetian should
undergo a forensic medical examination in connection with the incident and
that an investigation is being conducted.

Several media, political parties and NGOs, including the RA Human Rights
Defender, came up with statements condemning the assault of the journalist.

“FEAR OF RETRIBUTION LED TO A HIGH DEGREE OF MEDIA SELF-CENSORSHIP”,
HIGHLIGHTS US STATE DEPARTMENT

On April 19, the US State Department released the

country reports on human rights practices for 2012, prepared by the Bureau
of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor.

One of the sections of the Armenian country report touches upon the rights
to freedom of speech and press, which “the government did not always
uphold”: “There were several incidents of violence toward journalists,
largely in connection with the May 6 National Assembly elections. The number
of lawsuits for libel and defamation decreased.”

The State Department stresses that “print media continued to lack diversity
of political opinion and objective reporting”. At the same time, referring
to the reports of international and national observers, the State Department
notes that, in contrast to previous elections, broadcast media provided
diverse and objective coverage of campaign of the May 2012 parliamentary
elections. The report highlights that “the government did not release a
promised audit of the country’s television and radio frequencies that
provided the technical basis for limiting the number of digital broadcasting
licenses it permitted after the switchover from analogue to digital
transmission planned for 2015”. The country report also mentions about the
“A1+” TV company, which, since September 2012, broadcasts 20-minute daily
news programs on the air of “ArmNews” TV channel.

According to the country report authors, media, particularly broadcasters,
feared reprisals for reporting critical of the government: “Such reprisals
could include lawsuits, the threat of losing a broadcast license, selective
tax investigation, or loss of revenue when advertisers learned the media was
in disfavor with the government. Fear of retribution led to a high degree of
media self-censorship.”

“Online media were the primary alternative source of information, and,
unlike broadcast media, provided diverse political opinions. Their content
was largely unrestricted,” the State Department emphasizes.

There were some incidents of violence against journalists in connection with
the May 6, 2012 National Assembly elections. Thus, unknown persons attacked
Elina Chilingarian, correspondent
of Armenian Service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty outside a polling
station in Yerevan. Police opened a criminal case upon the incident but
closed it on July 13, 2012.

On March 21, 2012, the National Assembly passed a new Law “On the State of
Emergency”, which allows the restriction of freedom of
expression and media during a
declared state of emergency.

The report also stresses the November
15, 2011 ruling by the RA
Constitutional Court, which “resulted in fewer libel and defamation suits
during the year and the imposition of smaller damages against media”.

Armenia-Based Heritage Party Leader Holds March To Memorial To Genoc

ARMENIA-BASED HERITAGE PARTY LEADER HOLDS MARCH TO MEMORIAL TO GENOCIDE VICTIMS

14:20 ~U 24.04.13

Heritage party leader Raffi Hovannisian held a march from Yerevan’s
Freedom Square to the Memorial to Armenian Genocide victims
(Tsitsernakaberd).

“We must learn from our mistakes. We are demanding our lands, churches
and restoration of our rights from Turkey. This does not mean, however,
that we cannot ask ourselves what happened when the Armenian people
lost their homeland and lands,” he said.

The reason is that “we were not united or fully united.” And new
losses should be expected if things go on like this, Hovannisian said.

With respect to Armenia’s foreign policy, he told journalists that
President Serzh Sargsyan’s foreign policy is as wrong as his domestic
policy.

He called for the withdrawal of Armenia’s signature from the
Armenian-Turkish protocols.

The world will never recognize the Armenian Genocide if Armenia is
not consistent in defending its national interests.

As regards his regional trips, Hovannisian noted that the Gavar
regional authorities prohibited the provision of halls for public
meetings.

Turkish Statesmen Must Apologize For Genocide – Armenian MP

TURKISH STATESMEN MUST APOLOGIZE FOR GENOCIDE – ARMENIAN MP

14:59 ~U 24.04.13

A senior Armenian parliament member has called upon the Turkish
political elite to apologize to the Armenians for the 1915 Genocide,
following intellectuals’ example.

“I would very much like the Turkish statesmen to follow those
intellectuals’ example, who launched an apology campaign, managed
to put up with their defeat and say ‘yes, there were dark pages
in history’,” the vice speaker of the National Assembly, Eduard
Sharmazanov, told reporters at Yerevan’s Genocide remembrance park.

“Turkey has to sooner or later recognize the Armenian Genocide. That’s
a matter of time because the lie and falsification cannot always be
taken for truth,” he added.

Sharmazanov said he doesn’t feel optimistic about Turkish President
Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s positive
response to his call.

“Today’s message is also intended for the progressive mankind, to
make it realize that it is also its pain and shame that such kind
of atrocities go unpunished, with certain countries still pursuing
denial policies. All the progressive countries’ fight has to be against
denialism,” he said, recommending against any efforts to focus on the
Genocide’s 100th anniversary commemoration ceremony (which is in 2015).

Sharmazanov, who is a spokesperson of the ruling Republican Party
of Armenia, noted further that the international recognition of the
tragic crime is an ongoing struggle aimed to protect human rights
and prevent the recurrence of such atrocities.

The Genocide Remembrance Day also contains a message of life as the
large scale-massacres, which almost killed a nation, never destroyed
it, Sharmazanov said, adding that the nation was reborn after the
tragedy and managed to create an independent state decades later.

French And Swiss Ambassadors Highlight Events Commemorating Armenian

FRENCH AND SWISS AMBASSADORS HIGHLIGHT EVENTS COMMEMORATING ARMENIAN GENOCIDE VICTIMS

13:56, 24 April, 2013

YEREVAN, APRIL 24, ARMENPRESS: April 24 is an important date
for the Armenians of the world. This was stated by the Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to the Republic of Armenia
Henri Reynaud at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial, adding that this day
of remembrance is quite important for all the Armenians living in
France as well. “Between Armenia and France we have strong friendly
relations. And the role of the Armenian community in this issue is
great”, – said Henri Reynaud.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Switzerland to
the Republic of Armenia Konstantin Obolensky reported to Armenpress,
that coming to the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial and commemorating the
innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide is a very important and
emotional moment for him.

On April 24 it is the 98th anniversary of the remembrance of the
innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide. On the international
political level it will be clearer, what developments to expect
from the capitals of the world before the 100th anniversary in the
recognition and condemnation issues of the Armenian Genocide, which
occurred in 1915 and to what results the Armenia’s policy might bring.

The entire series of the documents, proving the fact of the mass
massacres of the Armenian people in 1915-1923 in the Ottoman Turkey
as a premeditated and thoroughly executed act of genocide, is enormous.

The Armenian Genocide was recognized by different organizations, such
as the European Council, the European Parliament, some commission of
the UN Organization, the World Church Union, etc.

The Armenian Genocide was recognized by many states. The first
country to officially recognize the Armenian Tragedy was Uruguay in
1965. The massacres of the Armenian people were officially condemned
and recognized as a genocide, in accordance with the international
law, by France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland,
Sweden, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Greece, Slovakia, Cyprus, Lebanon,
Uruguay, Argentina (2 laws and 5 draft bills), Venezuela, Chile,
Canada, Vatican, and Australia.

Some Of Javakhk’s Demands Acceptable To Georgia’s New Authorities –

SOME OF JAVAKHK’S DEMANDS ACCEPTABLE TO GEORGIA’S NEW AUTHORITIES – ACTIVIST

10:31 ~U 25.04.13

Vahagn Chakhalyan, a Javakhk-based Armenian activist, believes that
Georgia’s new government headed by Bidzina Ivanishvili accepts a
number of demands by Javakhk Armenians.

However, he does not hold great expectations to publicly make the
demands.

“We have dual power in Georgia. The new government is trying to heal
the wounds inflicted by the Saakashvili regime. Years ago we were
stating his regime was forcing Armenians out of Javakhk by means of
Turkish and Azerbaijani capital. At present, Georgia’s new authorities
are saying what we stated five years ago, namely, the regime committed
a crime against the Javakhk Armenians,” Chakhalyan told journalists
on Wednesday.

With respect to Georgia’s politics and Javakhk problems, Chakhalyan
noted that, with Georgian political figures constituting a majority,
Armenian-Georgian political figures are inconsistent.

“Georgia’s new premier is a political figure of new quality. He
has come to politics from business and is more or less known for
keeping his promises. But it would be wrong to hope for his personal
qualities. We must be united round our demands. The minimum is that
Javakhk Armenians remain in their native land to ensure the use of
the Armenian language,” he said.

Chakhalyan said that Georgia’s authorities are not exerting pressure
on him now.
