Turquie : Le Football Contre Le Fascisme

Cet après-midi,

action offensante soient retrouves.

Using falcons to scare off fruit-eating birds

Gulf Times, Qatar

Using falcons to scare off fruit-eating birds

Vahe Alaverdian feeds one of his raptors after flying the bird over a
vineyard in Los Alamos, California. Alaverdian uses the birds to
control nuisance birds which cause damage to crops. By David Pierson
To keep pesky birds away from his blueberries, veteran farmer Mark
Flamm has blared recordings of avian distress calls, shot noisy “bird
bangers” from a pistol and ordered an employee to shake a
gravel-filled bottle at the sky.

He even went old-school and planted a scarecrow.

“That didn’t work,” said Flamm, 58, who once lost a fifth of his
berries to his feathered foe despite the efforts, “though I got a
picture of a bird sitting on the scarecrow.” That’s when he called in
the falcons.

Starting three years ago, the central Washington state grower hired
Vahe Alaverdian of Falcon Force ( ), a master
falconer based in La Crescenta, California, to drive out the flocks of
sparrows and starlings that were fattened off Flamm’s fields.

Using a hunting technique that some think dates back to the Bronze
Age, Alaverdian prompted his raptors to launch into a series of
high-speed dives, called “stooping,” meant to mimic the capture of
winged prey. The maneuvers – not unlike an aeronautical war dance –
trigger an innate panic attack in the fruit-munching birds, who are
either paralyzed with fear or flee for new surroundings.

The falcons are trained to scare, not snack on, their targets.

“It’s amazing. Suddenly all the other birds go quiet because they know
they could be eaten,” said Flamm, who has seen his crop loss from
birds dwindle to around 3 percent.

In the age-old face-off between farmer and bird, falconry has
presented a relatively new way to tip the scales in man’s favour.

It’s an ancient twist to modern farming, which has embraced technology
to resist disease, conserve water and conjure a smorgasbord of
expensive hybrid fruit. Yet when it comes to marauding birds, growers
have few solutions short of ringing the skies with shotgun blasts.

“There’s not much we can do,” said Joe MacIlvaine, president of
Paramount Farming Co. in Bakersfield, California, the world’s largest
grower and processor of almonds and pistachios. “You can’t shoot them,
and you can’t poison them, which aren’t great ideas anyway.” One
Ventura County strawberry farmer’s imperfect answer is riding his
bicycle on his farm and sounding its bell. Others use timed propane
canons and firecrackers that can make a tranquil country morning sound
like the Battle of Waterloo.

“I give one of my workers a pan and a hammer, and he just pounds away
to scare the birds,” said John Tenerelli, a stone-fruit farmer in
Littlerock, near Palmdale, California.

Alex Weiser, a specialty fruit and vegetable grower in Kern and San
Bernardino counties, has an employee drive up and down his fields
shooing away the birds like a come-to-life scarecrow.

Recently, he tried specially manufactured inflatable yellow balloons
with reflective silver patches he calls the “evil eye.” Hung on the
end of a branch, the orbs are meant to spook the burglars in
midflight.

Despite all that, some of his best results come from firing a flare
gun in the general direction of the airborne offenders.

“Not too popular with the neighbours,” Weiser said.

Bird damage is often overshadowed by weather and water as a farmer’s
chief concerns. But avian pests are a formidable challenge, raising
the risk of contamination and costing growers hundreds of millions a
year in damaged crop.

Recent research by the US Department of Agriculture estimates that
birds peck $49 million away from California’s wine-grape industry each
harvest, $12.3 million from the state’s sweet-cherry growers and $2.6
million from blueberry farms.

In Washington, bird damage cost growers of Honeycrisp apples $26.7
million, blueberries $4.6 million and sweet cherries $31.9 million.
Birds, like humans, prefer sugary fruit; it’s one reason tart cherries
in Washington suffered only $1.8 million in losses.

“Birds are a serious problem because they tend to like the crops that
are expensive,” said Stephanie Shwiff, one of the study’s authors and
a researcher at the USDA’s National Wildlife Research Center in Fort
Collins, Colo.

With a modest investment in bird abatement, farmers can protect more
of their profits, Shwiff said.

The problem is choosing the right method. Putting a net over the
entire bush makes sense for small farms. But at around $400 an acre,
it could set a larger grower back $400,000.

Flash tape, whose shiny surface wards off the birds, speckles most of
California’s wine vineyards, but even that loses its luster once birds
realise it poses no threat.

“Anything that doesn’t change day to day, the birds will get used to
it,” said Alaverdian, the falconer.

A killing machine like a peregrine falcon will grab the attention of
your run-of-the-mill finch or crow.

Alaverdian demonstrated how on a recent summer morning at a 1,000-acre
commercial vineyard in Los Alamos, about a 45-minute drive northwest
from Santa Barbara.

Patrolling the hilly property in his dusty white SUV, Alaverdian
spotted about two dozen magpies roosting on a nearby cluster of oak
trees. Although posing no danger to the grapes below, the presence of
black and white birds risked attracting the most prolific plunderers –
starlings.

Alaverdian released Genghis, one of four falcons perched patiently in
the back of his car strapped with radio transmitters just in case they
fly out of sight. The four-year-old peregrine circled over the
chardonnay and pinot grigio grapes, gained altitude and then swooped
with astonishing force toward his handler.

Genghis was lured by pigeon feathers tethered to the end of a rope
that Alaverdian twirled with precision. Each time the falcon got
close, Alaverdian pulled back the lure.

“This whole process is devastating from the prey’s point of view,”
said Alaverdian, 39, who repeated the performance several times until
the magpies vanished over a hill. Genghis was rewarded with a bloody
pigeon carcass pulled out of a Ziploc bag in the SUV cup holder.

The constant pressure encourages unwanted birds to seek their meals
elsewhere, sometimes to the detriment of neighbours. Alaverdian was
once cursed out by a vineyard manager next door. He took it as another
sign his falcons were hitting their stride. In the five years he’s
worked at the vineyard, netting has decreased from 95 percent to 5
percent.

That makes Alaverdian’s $700 day rate a bargain by comparison, though
it might take weeks or even months to take care of the problem.

Though effective, there aren’t enough certified master falconers like
Alaverdian to expand beyond a niche market in the nation’s $15 billion
fruit industry.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service said falconry is growing in
popularity. Traditionally a blood sport for the rich, it has found a
second life in the world of bird abatement. E & J Gallo Winery has
been using falcons for eight years in Sonoma County. Kendall Jackson
Winery has been doing it just as long in Monterey and Sonoma counties.
The birds are also employed at airports, landfills and beaches.

Still, not just anyone can pick up the craft. The life of a falconer
can be gruelling.

Alaverdian, whose Armenian family fled war-torn Iran in the 1980s,
said the job requires a comfort with ruggedness and solitude. He
spends months without a break on a single vineyard or farm.

He hasn’t bought commercial meat in 14 years. He eats salmon, trout,
elk and deer he catches in the wild. So engrossed with his work, he
can’t help but flinch when he sees a flock of birds even when he’s
driving back to his motel.

“When I was in Washington, I was asked why I didn’t go to church,”
said Alaverdian, who sports a perpetual five o’clock shadow and an
intensity on par with his prized predators. “I said, ‘Unless the
starlings go to church too, I’m not going either.'”- Los Angeles

Sen. Menendez Celebrates Independence Day with Community

Sen. Menendez Celebrates Independence Day with Community

Sunday, September 22nd, 2013

by Ara Khachatourian

Sen. Menendez addresses the community during Armenia’s Independence
celebration in Glendlae

The Republic of Armenia is but a link in the chain of our greater
ideals, says Dr. Viken Hovsepian.

GLENDALE-Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Robert Menendez
attended and addressed a community celebration of the 22nd anniversary
of Armenia’s Independence on Sunday at the Glendale Youth Center.

In his remarks, Menendez recalled the heroic perseverance of the
Armenian people who took up arms to defend their homeland in 1918,
establishing the Independent Republic of Armenia, and after seven
decades of Soviet rule, once again declared their will to live freely.

The senator also praised the contribution of Armenian Americans to the
fabric of life in the United States, and highlighted the contributions
of the Armenian National Committee of America in advancing the just
aspirations of the Armenian people and advocating for their rights.

Menedez also said that the time has come for the United States to join
the European Union and 19 other countries and recognize the Armenian
Genocide. He recalled Hitler’s famous quote `who now remembers the
Armenians’ before embarking on the Holocaust. `We remember,’ he
declared.

The senator also took time to meet and greet the community members
gathered to mark Armenia’s independence.

Sen. Menendez with Dr. Viken Hovsepian

Also speaking during the program was Dr. Viken Hovsepian, the chairman
of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Western US Central Committee.
In his remarks Hovsepian highlighted the need to work hard and
sacrifice to preserve independence and advance our national ideals.

`We understood it at its inception and we understand it even better
now that independence is not a date-specific event and that it’s a
process which requires hard work and sacrifice,’ said Hovsepian, `The
independent Republic of Armenia is but a link in the chain of our
goals and dreams-the chain which symbolizes our ideals for a more
free, more independent, definitely more just and democratic Armenia
which will serve as an anchor to our larger dreams of a complete and
united Armenia.’

`The link by itself is not complete, and the chain missing a single
link stops becoming the chain that it is,’ explained Hovsepian who
emphasized the importance of the inclusion and involvement of every
Armenian in the advancement of the Armenian nation.

The community gathered to celebrate Armenia’s Independence

`We cannot understand those who consider the efforts for a better
Republic of Armenia to be the monopoly of those living within the
boundaries of our incomplete, 29,000 square kilometers, partial state,
as three-fourths of our Nation lives outside of those territories,’
said Hovsepian.

`Those who live outside of Armrenia played an instrumental role in
battling the Soviet rule over Armenia, and they will go on shaping a
better Armenia in the present times,’ said Hovsepian. `Irrespective of
where an Armenian lives, it is his or her service and the level of
dedication that matters and not the soil on which he or she lives on.
It is incumbent upon us to re dedicate ourselves today, on this solemn
and happy occasion, to the service of our nation, and to that link
which we call the Republic of Armenia, in the name of the chain of our
ideals.’

Artak Galstyan, representing Armenia’s Consulate General, addresses
the gathering

Representing Armenia’s Consulate General, Artak Galstyan addressed the
gathering, highlighting the importance of the day and critical turning
point Armenia’s independence was in history.

Independence unites all Armenians: Isabel Bayrakdarian’s interview t

Independence unites all Armenians: Isabel Bayrakdarian’s interview to Armenpress

11:17, 20 September, 2013

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 20, ARMENPRESS. Canadian-Armenian opera singer,
prominent soprano, winner of a number of contests. A woman, who
performed in the world’s major opera houses, recital stages and
concert halls. An artist with perpetual and exquisite talent. Isabel
Bayrakdarian is very popular in Armenia. Each of her visits becomes a
feast for her fans and experts of the realm, who highly appreciate her
art. “Armenpress” News Agency introduces interview with the
world-known singer.

– You visited Armenia at 2004. Have You been here since then? What are
your feelings about Your native country?

– Not only did I visit Armenia in 2004, I came back to get married in
Geghart, then came back again and again for many concerts and
opera-in-concert with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. Later I
also recorded the album “Gomidas Songs”, again with my good friends at
the APO, which got nominated for a Grammy in 2008.

– I know, that when You were young, You sang in Armenian church. What
do You remember of that experience and those days?

– When I think to the church of my childhood in Zahle Lebanon, the
immediate mental image is that of a small candle-lit church with dim
lighting, the sweet smell of incense and wax candles, and the 6-7 year
old me standing in choir in front of my mother, feeling protected by
her and enveloped by the love of God, while singing the incomparably
beautiful hymns and medieval sharagans of our church, which are the
direct pathway to God.

– Which Armenian artist does inspire You the best?

– If I have to choose (and there are many) I would choose Cathy
Berberian. First and foremost, I admire her versatility and her
artistry, which are completely unique. She took risks, explored new
repertoire, sang the entire range of the female voice, had many great
composers of the 20th century write new works for her, and on top of
that, she was extremely witty and funny as a person. I love her
curious mind and her love of life, which is something I identify with
and respect immensely.

– What are You working on at this moment? Is there a new soundtrack
which You are going to prepare?

– My new recording “Troubadour and the Nightingale” is going to be
released in a month and I’m happy to say that in addition to songs by
Ravel and my husband Serouj Kradjian, it will also include a group of
lovely troubadour songs by Sayat Nova, which were arranged for chamber
orchestra by Serouj.

– Tell us about Your teachers. Who made You love music and singing?

– The love of music was always within me, but if you don’t have the
proper tools, you can’t bring your passion to fruition. When I was
young and singing in church, I always felt that I should be doing more
justice to this divine music, and that the technical limitations of an
untrained voice was a hindrance to my communication with God. This is
the reason, pure and simple, as to why I started to take singing
lessons. It wasn’t some grand fantasy about singing on stage and
making dazzling sounds and having people applaud.

Born in Lebanon of proud Armenian heritage and now a citizen of
Canada, Ms. Bayrakdarian moved with her family to Toronto as a
teenager. Her earliest singing experience was at church, which remains
– along with her family – the central focus of her life. She holds an
honors degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of
Toronto.

Ms. Bayrakdarian sings on the Grammy® award-winning soundtrack of the
blockbuster film The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers, and her voice
can also be heard in the multiple award-winning Canadian film Ararat.
She has been honored with four Juno awards, Canada’s highest recording
prize, most recently for her CD Mozart arie & duetti with fellow
Canadians Russell Braun and Michael Schade. Expanding her vast
discography, Ms. Bayrkdarian was a guest soloist with the Canadian
band Delerium on their 2007 Grammy® nominated dance remix “Angelicus.”
Ms. Bayrakdarian is the subject of a CBC-TV film entitled A Long
Journey Home that documents her first trip to Armenia; on another trip
there she recorded a disc of songs by the country’s national composer,
Gomidas Vartabed (1869-1935), with Serouj Kradjian and the Armenian
Philharmonic Orchestra which is available on the Nonesuch label and
was a 2009 Grammy® nominee.

‘Armenia lost 2 million 300 thousand people during independence years’

`2 million 300 thousand people are our greatest loss during the years
of independence. 5 million would live in Armenia today, but only 2
million 700 thousand currently live here,’ sociologist Aharon
Adibekian told reporters today.

In his words, most of the Armenian economy was based on
`sovietization’, but `after gaining independence, we lost it’.
`Besides, our population has halved. If 5 million people lived here,
we would have a serious market and a large workforce,’ Adibekian
noted.

According to him, independence is not the most important thing for the
country. `It is important that people have jobs and live a life of
dignity in their country,’ the sociologist said.

`While gaining independence, we lost our powerful economy, and in that
case at least we should have maintained close cooperation with Russia.
So I believe that the decision on entry into the Customs Union has
been the most correct one in the history of independent Armenia,’
Adibekian said.

PanARMENIAN.Net – The Nagorno Karabakh Republic President Bako
Sahakyan sent a congratulatory letter to Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan on the 22nd anniversary of the Republic of Armenia’s
Independence.

“22 years ago our nation made a historical decision, which radically
changed the course of its further development. Finally, the
independent Armenian statehood, which seemed unrealizable for
centuries and the right of Armenian people to manage their own destiny
and build country on their historical land by their own hands were
restored. It was a decisive step, the truth and inevitability of which
has been proved during all these years.

Today, the Republic of Armenia is moving forward with confidence,
implementing various projects aimed at providing security and
strengthening defense capacity as well as improving people’s
socioeconomic and living conditions. I am more than confident that the
Armenian people would achieve new successes and fulfill the national
goals with joint efforts and the Armenia-Artsakh-Diaspora unshakable
trinity,’ the President said.

Queen Elizabeth II has also congratulated the people of Armenia on the
22nd anniversary of their independence a post on the British Embassy’s
Facebook page said.

Ambassador Jonathan Aves commented, “This is a proud day for the
people of Armenia. The establishment of an independent, sovereign
Armenian Republic is a great achievement. The UK will continue to work
with Armenia as it seeks a secure and prosperous future”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also issued a congratulatory message,
hailing Armenia’s successes in socioeconomic, scientific,
technological and cultural sectors.

level of allied partnership and continue to develop intensively.

context of Armenia’s accession to Customs Union, the Kremlin’s
official website said.

`On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I extend my
warmest wishes to the people of Armenia as you celebrate your
Independence Day on September 21,’ U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry
said in his congratulatory message.

`The United States and Armenia have a strong relationship based on
historic ties and mutual respect. I am proud and grateful for the
enduring friendship of many in the Armenian community. As someone who
for three decades represented Massachusetts, which boasts one of the
largest populations of Armenians outside of Armenia, I have special
firsthand knowledge of the contributions that you have made to
America’s culture, democracy and economic vitality.

Today our two countries are working together on a dynamic bilateral
and regional agenda. Through forums such as the U.S.-Armenia Economic
Task Force, we look forward to further strengthening the economic and
commercial bonds between our peoples.

I wish all Armenians a joyful and prosperous Independence Day, with
