KIRO MANOYAN: INSISTENCE ON BOMBARDMENT OF IRAN BY SAUDI ARABIA – THE ONLY SENSATION IN WIKILEAKS’ MATERIALS

ArmInfo. Insistence on bombardment of Iran by Saudi Arabia is the
only sensation in Wikileaks’ materials, that allows to come to a
conclusion that the US authorities are not a client of the secret
materials published at Wikileaks site, Head of Hay Dat Central Bureau
and office of ARF Dashnaktsutyun for political issues Kiro Manoyan
told journalists today.

“Everybody sees that the site gave almost no news as if publishing the
US Department of State’s secret materials, since the problems between
Azerbaijan and Iran and cooling of Azerbaijan-Turkey relations were
perfectly known to everyone. Moreover, it would be very interesting
to get acquainted with interpretation of these facts personally from
President Aliyev”, he said.

As K. Manoyan said, despite the fact that many publications proceed
from the US interests, Washington would not pay such a high price
for the PR, considering that America has to change its ambassadors
as they are no more authoritative in many countries. “Moreover,
considering that many materials have not yet been published, it would
be quite interesting to get acquainted with more than 1,7 thousand
materials regarding Armenia, since these materials will contain a
lot of interesting aspects which will shed light on many facts and
events”, he resumed.

POLITICAL EXPERT: GENERAL BACKGROUND OF KARABAKH CONFLICT’S RESOLUTION CHANGES IN FAVOR OF ARMENIA

ArmInfo
2010-12-03 17:40:00

ArmInfo. General background of the Karabakh process has changed in
favor of Armenia since the final declaration of the OSCE Summit
in Astana does not even mention Nagorny Karabakh and the joint
statement was adopted by the OSCE MG Co-Chairs and presidents of
Armenia and Azerbaijan, Gagik Haroutiunyan, Director of Noravank
Scientific Research Foundation, told media commenting on the results
of the OSCE Summit in Astana.

Increase of Russia’s role in the negotiation process and the principal
stance of Armenia strengthened Armenia’s positions in the Karabakh
process. That stance was reflected in President Serzh Sargsyan’s speech
at Chatham House, during the military exercises in Nagorny Karabakh
and at the OSCE Summit in Astana, he said. Haroutiunyan believes that
the Armenian party has demonstrated decisiveness over the last year by
showing that any threats of military resolution to the conflict have
no perspectives. In fact, Azerbaijan has found itself in a deadlock,
which makes Aliyev to retreat.

The OSCE Summit in Astana on December 1 – 2 was the first summit
over the last 11 years. Leaders of 28 OSCE member-states attended the
Summit and discussed the Karabakh process alongside with other issues.

On the occasion of the OSCE Summit in Astana, a Joint Statement by
the Heads of Delegation of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair Countries
and the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia was adopted. The three
OSCE Co-Chair countries pledged their support for the Presidents of
Azerbaijan and Armenia as they make the necessary decisions to reach a
peaceful settlement. They urged the leaders ofArmenia and Azerbaijan
to focus with renewed energy on the issues that still remain in the
Basic Principles, and instructed their Co-Chairs to continue to work
with the parties to the conflict to assist in these efforts.

Yerevan Municipality Explains Its Stance On ‘Garden Of Dragons’

YEREVAN MUNICIPALITY EXPLAINS ITS STANCE ON ‘GARDEN OF DRAGONS’

ArmInfo
2010-12-03 12:14:00

ArmInfo. Yerevan Municipality has explained its stance regarding the
“Garden of Dragons”.

As EcoLur reports, Yerevan Municipality disseminated a statement
referring to “Garden of Dragons”. The statement says, “We consider
it necessary to say information disseminated by several electronic
newspapers about the statement made by Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglaryan in
regard with the construction of a territory called “Garden of Dragons”
is distorted and doesn’t comply with the truth….”

The Mayor’s stance is as follows: no tree should be cut and no
construction should be carried out in the alley’s territory, which
would hamper the garden’s functionality. And if any construction is
carried out outside of the garden and meet all the required standards,
why not to build, the more especially as the matter concerns a
residential building”.

To recall, Air Construction Company was going to build a 18-storey
building in the territory of the alley without relevant resolution
by the state environment examination. Yet in 2000 part of the alley
was privatized and its owners changed several times over the last
10 years. On November 17 the 2 thsd sq.m. territory of the park
was fenced, the benches were taken out, afterwards workers started
cutting the trees. Local residents removed the fence to protect the
green area. Noteworthy, the residents’ initiative was supported by
the head of the Nork district Melik Gasparyan. By his decision, the
holes, dug out by heavy machinery, were backfilled. A tree-planting
action was held in the alley on December 2.

STATE COMMISSION FOR PROTECTION OF ECONOMIC COMPETITION FINDS NO CHEESE PRICE FIXING

/ARKA/
December 3, 2010
YEREVAN

YEREVAN, December 3, /ARKA/. Armenia’s state anti-trust regulator
said today it found no evidence proving that local dairy companies
acted in collusion to raise drastically prices of cheese in September
and October.

The State Commission for Protection of Economic Competition (SCPEC) had
to open a formal inquiry into a drastic rise in the prices of cheese
after the retail cost of various types of locally produced cheese,
a staple food consumed by most Armenians on a virtually daily basis,
had jumped by between 30 and 40 percent for unknown reasons.

Speaking today at a news conference, head of SCPEC, Artak Shaboyan,
said the study has nonetheless found that the drastic rise was not
fully justified. Earlier agriculture minister Gerasim Alaverdian
blamed the surge in prices on a seasonal drop in milk production and
increased exports of Armenian cheese, however these explanations were
denied strongly by consumer groups saying the rise was a price fixing
by leading dairy firms.

But according to Artak Shaboyan, the SCPEC had examined 16 of 78
dairy firms in the country to have found that 33% of the market was
held by Ashtarak Kat company, 6/1% by Dustr Melania, 5.3% by Araks-2
and 55.8% by other companies. He said Ashtrak Kat was the first to
raise the prices in September and the rest followed suit.

“This company, according to the law, is not dominating at the market,
nonetheless it has a substantial impact on the processes at it. The
company has risen the price of one kg of cheese by 815 Drams (more
than $2.5) to 3000 Drams,’ Shaboyan said, adding that all factors
like rise of prices of milk, unfavorable climatic conditions and the
reducing number of cows all have played a role, but the rise should
not have gone beyond 80 Drams.

He said after the major study the SCPEC concluded that there was no
price fixing because the firms did nor rise the prices simultaneously.

He said also that cheese prices began o fall from November 19 and
have dropped by 40-500 Drams.

KIRO MANOYAN EMPHASIZES ARFD ROLE IN DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN POLICY OF ARMENIA

PanARMENIAN.Net
December 3, 2010 – 15:29 AMT 11:29 GMT

On December 3, Yerevan hosted a scientific conference timed to 120th
anniversary of ARF Dashnaktsutyun.

“120th anniversary of ARF Dashnaktsutyun, marked this year, is another
possibility to draw public attention to a range of political and
historical issues,” ARFD Bureau member Levon Lazarian stated.

As he noted, “the conference is a chance to promote struggle against
Turkish propaganda on Genocide issue.”

“In an attempt to strike a political blow against Armenia, Turkey
targets Armenian history, vainly searching to disproof the legality
of the country’s demands,” Lazarian said, adding that a presentation
of a book entitled International Legal Grounds for Armenia’s Demands
will take place in December 2010.

ARF Bureau Hay Dat and Political Affairs Office director Kiro Manoyan,
in turn, said, “we’ll continue with 120 year-old line of the party
with the same aim of serving Armenian people and forming a unified
Armenia. Strengthening of Armenian statehood is the first step in
that direction.”

“Tomorrow, a similar conference will be held in the U.S.,” Manoyan
said, emphasizing ARFD role both in domestic and foreign policy
of Armenia.

High Note: Placido Domingo In Concert Tonight

One of the world’s best tenors in Armenia

World renown tenor Placido Domingo has arrived in Yerevan for a
performance tonight (December 3). Domingo was received by the prime
minister and speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia and was
awarded with the NA Medal of Honor. Domingo said that he appreciated
the warm reception here, and promised “to visit Armenia again to
enjoy this wonderful country.”

“I have had Armenia in my mind since I was very young. My mother was
a singer, and her vocal teacher was an Armenian. I knew Armenians
long ago, however, I did not manage to visit all this time,” says
the Spanish tenor.

On Thursday, NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan, receiving the musician
and delivering one of the highest awards – the NA Medal of Honor –
to him said that “Maestro’s visit is a unique event in the cultural
life of Armenia.”

The concert of the legendary tenor will take place in Yerevan’s biggest
hall – Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex (with about 10,000
seats). And even though the concert ticket prices were rather high
for Armenia – 40,000-200,000 drams ($112-$560), there are almost no
tickets left at box offices.

The organizers of Yerevan Perspectives Festival invited Domingo to
Armenia. They have been carrying negotiations with him since 2005.

“The fact that the festival managed to bring other world known stars
to Armenia had an important role in Domingo’s agreement to visit our
country,” says Sona Hovhannisyan, festival manager.

During the recent few years, within the framework of the festival, Joe
Cocker, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Kronos
Quartet and other super stars’ concerts were organized in Yerevan.

KEEPING FAITH IN ISTANBUL: ARMENIAN COMMUNITY STRONG SAYS DINK SUCCESSOR

Istanbul-based Armenian Bagrat Estukian visits the shore of Bosphorus
straits each last Sunday of a month to participate in a holy mass,
served in Surp Yerits Mangants Church in the Armenian ‘Boyaji Gyugh’
district in Istanbul.

“More than 30 Armenian churches operate in Istanbul,” says Estukian,
editor of the Armenian edition of Istanbul-based ‘Agos’ daily. “After
the massacres, our ancestors came to Istanbul, hoping to find freedom
here. Istanbul used to differ from other Turkish towns then, but the
fact was that it was again Turkey.”

after a few generations,” says Astukian.

baptized,” says Sirvard Kuyumjian.

now (almost 4 years since his death) preserved the way it was just
before he left and never returned.

Enlarge Photo Aras Armenian publishing house in IstanbulThe generations
of genocide survivors lived under Turkish Armenophobic policy, and
many, not being able to stand it anymore, left Turkey. If at the end of
1915, more than 300,000 Genocide survivors lived in Istanbul, now the
population of the Armenian community in Istanbul is only 60,000-70,000.

The Armenian national hospital Surb Prkich (Church of the Redeemer),
and Surb Hakob (St. Jacob) Katoghike hospital belong to the Armenian
community in Istanbul. Three dailies are released – ‘Agos’, published
since 2000, with 24 pages (four pages are in Armenian, and 20 pages –
in Turkish; 5,000-6,000 print run); 102-year-old ‘Zhamanak’ (Time)
(2,000 print run); and ‘Marmara’, published since 1940 (1,500 print
run).

The only Armenian ‘Aras’ printing and publishing house in Turkey is
also in Istanbul.

Artashes Markosian, editor of the printing and publishing house says
that the objective of ‘Aras’ is to preserve the cultural heritage of
Armenians living in Turkey for future generations. It has published
120 titles so far, one third of which are in Armenian. There are also
books about the Armenian Genocide among them, which are not sold at
bookstores in Istanbul. As for Yerevan, books published by ‘Aras’
are sold at ArtBridge Bookstore Cafe.

The Armenian community in Istanbul has five high and 14 elementary
schools, where 3,000 children study, however, their number in the
community reaches 12,000. The rest of the children attend Turkish
schools, which unlike Armenian schools, are free of charge.

Getronagan High School, founded in 1886, is one of the Istanbul-based
Armenians high schools. The high school, which has about 230 students
studying in the 9-12 grades, has 50-60 alumni each year; only baptized
Armenians study here.

“At the entrance of the preparatory [of the school], you must prove
that you are an Armenian, and the only proof here is being baptized,”
says Sirvard Kuyumjian, head of Getronagan High School.

The deputy head of the school is a Turk, which is compulsory for an
Armenian school and other schools belonging to national minorities. It
is forbidden to speak about the Armenian genocide at history classes.

Teachers of the Armenian literature try to fill that gap, briefly
touching upon what happened in 1915.

The high school needs specialists and textbooks. They use
50-60-year-old textbooks.

Teacher of the Armenian language Natalie Baghdad says that all those
who have graduated from an Armenian school in Turkey do not have the
right to hold high posts. But they become good linguists, lawyers,
doctors or teachers.

The life of Istanbul-based Armenians was essentially changed after
death of Hrant Dink, editor-in-chief of ‘Agos’ daily, who was murdered
on January 19, 2007, by Turk nationalist Ogun Samast just in front of
‘Agos’ office.

“The appearance of hidden Armenians incredibly ran up. They came and
said that Hrant had been killed for being an Armenian. “We are also
Armenians; let them kill us, too,” they said,” Estukian recalls.

Employees of ‘Agos’ editorial house say that they have no forbidden
theme in their daily. Yet when Dink was alive they used the word
“genocide” and paid an extremely high price for it. Now all the more,
they have no reason not to use it.

“Our daily always tried to speak about genocide through telling about
it, through presenting the historical fact, because today’s Turkish
people do not know what the Genocide is, it’s a closed topic here,”
Estukian says.

Since the 1990s Dink had tried to break through the limitations of
the closed topic.

“It was important to us to make sure that Turkish people know about
it. The position of the government [of Turkey] would hardly change,
if people do not change. If people change, the government would
also change after a few generations. This is a great struggle,”
Estukian says.

Istanbul-based Kurd lawmaker Ufuk Uras has entered the Turkish
parliament with the help of the vote of national minorities. Last
year he visited Armenia with President of Turkey Abdullah Gul.

The Kurd lawmaker joined the signature collection campaign of Turk
members of intelligentsia, where they apologize to Armenians for
the genocide.

“Turkey has not been cleansed of massacres’ blood yet. We and Armenians
have many things in common. There is no need to look for historical
events in the diplomatic labyrinth. I appreciate this signature
collection even more than whether or not U.S. President Barack Obama
will pronounce the word genocide on April 24,” Uras says.

Heritage Party Leader On A Visit To Cambodia

HERITAGE PARTY LEADER ON A VISIT TO CAMBODIA

PanARMENIAN.Net
December 3, 2010 – 18:03 AMT 14:03 GMT

Raffi K. Hovannisian, Heritage Party leader and Armenia’s first
minister of foreign affairs, is currently in the Cambodian capital to
take part in and address the 6th General Assembly of the International
Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) on the 10th anniversary
of its founding, the party said in a press release.

Bringing together the delegates of 89 political parties from 36
countries, ICAPP’s continental convention is dedicated this year to
“Asia’s Quest for a Better Tomorrow.”

Raffi Hovannisian’s plenary presentation outlined the global
security, environmental, socioeconomic and human challenges of the
third millennium, and against the backdrop of state sovereignties
and national interests underscored the imperative of respecting and
safeguarding the fundamental dignity, rights, and empowerment of each
and every individual in national societies and international affairs.

In this connection and as the grandson of survivors of the Great
Genocide and National Dispossession of the Armenian people,
Hovannisian paid tribute to its victims as well as those of the
Holocaust, the Cambodian genocide and all other crimes against
humanity. Reconciliation, he concluded, must in all cases be anchored
in truth, justice and a liberating redemption.

Raffi Hovannisian had earlier joined the other delegates in visiting
the Phnom Penh High School which in 1975 the dictator Pol Pot and
his Khmer Rouge regime had turned into the S-21 concentration camp,
a holding and torture compound that served as the launching ground
for the murder of nearly two million of his own people in the killing
fields of Cambodia. It was not until this past summer that the first
senior officer of the Khmer Rouge was actually tried and convicted
on the charge of perpetration of genocide.

In the margins of the conference, Hovannisian met with Cambodian
Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen; Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Sri
Mohamad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak; Nepalese Prime Minister Madhav
Kumar Nepal; former President Fidel Ramos of the Philippines; former
President Megawati Sukarnoputri of Indonesia; Chinese Communist
Party Politbureau member Li Yuanchao; Speaker of the Philippines
Parliament Feliciano Belmonte; ICAPP Founder and former Speaker of
the Philippines Parliament Jose de Venecia; as well as officials and
non-governmental representatives from Asia and across the world.

Also participating in the conclave was a delegation of the Armenian
Revolutionary Federation of Lebanon led by its Central Committee
chairman Mr. Hovsep Moukhtarian.
