Turkey to support Azerbaijan in Karabakh

During a meeting with local residents of Igdir, Turkish Prime Minister
Erdogan said that normalization of relations with Armenia was
impossible without a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,
Trend cites CNN-Turk.

“The sorrow of Azerbaijan is our sorrow, the joy of Azerbaijan is our
joy. Here, I once more declare that normalization of relations with
Armenia is impossible without a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict,” Erdogan said.

“We have always supported Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh and will
support them in future. Nobody should expect anything else of us about
this issue. We gave a proper response to the Armenians in PACE,” the
Prime Minister added.

Super six boxing semi on after refs row resolved

BERLIN, Germany – The Super Six semi-final between German-Armenian
fighter Arthur Abraham and American Andre Ward has been confirmed for
May 14 after a dispute over the referee was settled.

The California Boxing Commission has said they will use Puerto Rican
referee Luis Pabon rather than a local ref, as was first suggested,
for the bout.

“We have won the first round without leaving the country,” said
Abraham’s promoter Wilfried Sauerland, who had threatened to boycott
the fight if a Californian referee was used.

After the decision that Pabon will officiate the fight, Abraham
travelled with coach Ulli Wegner to California on Sunday morning.

“I am delighted that everything has been resolved and I thank my
management for their effort,” said Abraham.

The WBA super-middleweight title is on the line and in the final the
winner will face either Briton Carl Froch – who beat Abraham last
November to regain his World Boxing Council super-middleweight title –
or Glen Johnson, who meet on Saturday June 4.

Ward has an unbeaten record with 23 wins including 13 knock-outs,
while Abraham’s record is 26 knock-outs from 32 bouts and two defeats,
but the Berlin-based Abraham says he has a good chance of victory.

“In boxing, everything is possible – especially if you have fire in
your fists,” he said.

Massacre of Armenians was recognized by US as crime against humanity

Massacre of Armenians was recognized by U.S. as crime against humanity
still toward the end of World War I

Almost no one believes that in 2015 Turkey may recognize the Armenian
Genocide. Its recognition would mean casting doubt on the very
existence of the Turkish Republic.

On the eve of the Remembrance Day of the Armenian Genocide victims,
the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reiterated its support for convening
a joint historic commission between Armenia and Turkey to `resolve
differences over their shared history.’ ADL also discouraged adoption
of any resolutions on the Armenian Genocide recognition in the US
Congress.

April 22, 2011
PanARMENIAN.Net –

Glen S. Lewy, ADL national chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL national
director, issued a statement, which partly encouraged the steps to
create an atmosphere in which Armenia would respond favorably to the
recent overtures of Turkey to convene a joint commission.

Once again Armenians witnessed disapproval of the term `genocide’ by
the Jews, when speaking about the massacre of Armenians in the Ottoman
Empire in 1915-1923. Most experts explain this approach by the
strategic relations between Turkey and Israel, but it is only a
superficial view. According to a number of historical sources, most of
the leaders of Young Turks, including founder of the modern Republic
of Turkey Kemal Ataturk, were Jews who converted to Islam. In fact, it
means that the Armenian genocide was unleashed by the Jews who are now
reluctant to equate the Genocide to the Holocaust. Meanwhile, it must
be admitted that as compared to the atrocities of 1915, the mass
murder of the Jews in continental Europe was less terrible, if this
determiner can ever be used in applying to mass slaughter of a people
by ethnicity and race. The state of Israel is simply reluctant to live
with the fact that another people, besides the Jews, can have been
subjected to unprecedented persecution in the Ottoman Empire. Only
when she accepts this, can there be discussed the possibility of the
Armenian Genocide recognition by Israel. However, it should also be
noted that, after all, the Jews and other national minorities
converted to Islam mainly through force of circumstances; most of them
were forced to do it. That is, by and large, this reason for rejection
of the Armenian Genocide by the Jews has not a leg to stand on. Maybe
it’s all about the U.S. stance? Many, perhaps, have already forgotten
that still toward the end of the World War I the United States
recognized the massacre of Armenians as a crime against humanity. The
fact that Dr. Raphael Lemkin coined the term `genocide’ can change
nothing. And the U.S. Congress adopted a resolution on recognition of
the Armenian Genocide in 1975. This notwithstanding, the activity of
the Diaspora is reduced to arranging meetings every year with the
requirement to once again recognize the Armenian Genocide. Perhaps
still in the 70s the Diaspora ought to have gone to the UN
International Court of Justice and demanded recognition and
compensation. Unfortunately, this was not done, and the fault entirely
lies with the Diaspora, since the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic
had no legal right to bring any issue to the international court,
bypassing the federal government.

As for the joint commission of historians, it must be noted that it’s
necessary to no one, especially to Turkey. Neither is there any need
to look up in the archive: everything related to the period of the
Young Turks is unquestionably either destroyed, or properly adjusted.
Let us not forget that the official language of the Ottoman Empire was
Osmanli written in Arabic script. In fact, the documents must be read,
translated into modern Turkish, then into English and other languages,
which means that it’s a lingering and totally unproductive job.

And lastly, almost no one believes that in 2015 Turkey may recognize
the Armenian Genocide. To recognize would mean to cast doubt on the
very existence of the Turkish Republic. And it is what no Turkish
politician will ever do, whatever roots they may have.

`Arab spring’ plunges Middle East into chaos

`Arab spring’ plunges Middle East into chaos

Nobody is going to protect Syrian opposition; moreover, the U.S. makes
everyone believe she is not concerned about Syrian disturbances. The
same awaits Azerbaijani opposition.

`Arab spring’ threatens to drown not only the Middle East, but also
the neighboring regions, particularly the Caucasus. A bad example is
infectious, and opposition in the South Caucasus, like crazy, is
trying to follow in the footsteps of `Arab brothers’ and establish
something like Tunisia or Libya. Egyptian events are less attractive,
as they resulted in mere change of dictatorship, the new one possibly
being even tougher.

April 29, 2011
PanARMENIAN.Net –

Especially active are the oppositions in Azerbaijan and Armenia,
despite the presence of the Karabakh conflict, which in case of
unhappy turn of events can become the horse on which the opposition of
the two countries will ride up to power. And if the Karabakh factor
plays a moderating role in Armenian, in Azerbaijan no one takes it
into account. And it’s understandable – in order to overthrow the
Aliyev clan there are necessary much more powerful means than just the
boring phrase `we’ll go and liberate’. The opposition in Baku says
almost nothing about Karabakh, fairly believing that it’s impossible
to get very far on mere slogans if the majority of the population
lives below the poverty line and is so hopeless that the president
forgave them the debts for water. And all this is happenings against
the background of triumphant reports on GDP growth, powerful army and
inexhaustible reserves of oil and gas. Iraq and Libya have oil, too.
But nobody is going to protect Syrian opposition; moreover, the U.S.
makes everyone believe she is not concerned about Syrian disturbances.
Even the UN, despite its inability to do anything constructive, failed
to adopt a resolution on Syria. UN Security Council members proved
unable to issue a joint statement condemning the violence against the
antigovernment forces in Syria. The UN Security Council meeting, that
lasted nearly two and a half hours, limited itself to statements about
the position of each of the countries.

The Russian representative spoke out against adoption of a tough
resolution. `The current situation in Syria, despite the heightened
tension and confrontation, does not pose a threat to international
peace and security,’ said Russia’s deputy permanent representative to
the United Nations, Alexander Pankin in his speech.

Earlier, the UK, Germany, Portugal and France had proposed a draft
statement, strongly condemning the Syrian authorities. However, the
other countries, and especially Lebanon – the only Arab country in the
UN Security Council – opposed, and therefore the meeting was decided
to be held open.

Most likely, the resolution was not adopted because of Iran, which,
according to Western observers, is the country standing behind the
`Arab revolutions’. However, it’s nothing but one of the hypotheses
among others, for Egypt, Tunisia, Libya are yet secular countries,
despite Islam, the proclaimed official religion. Most likely, they are
attracted at the Islamism of Saudi clerics. But if we draw an analogy
with the South Caucasus, Azerbaijan takes the place of Syria. Even if
the weak protest actions of the opposition escalate into more serious
anti-government demonstrations, no one will speak against the Aliyev
regime. Aliyev is even in a better position – he’s got oil and threat
from Iran.

As for Armenia, nobody seems to take her seriously, for purely
geopolitical reasons. Under the current circumstances, it is good. And
but for the possibility of Turkish expansion – not military, but only
economic – one could talk about Armenia as the most peaceful country
in the region. The Turkish threat truly exists, and it cannot be fully
shrugged off. It is especially Turkey that can become a source of
tension in the region because of its close (in words) relations with
Azerbaijan and Georgia. Turkish investments in Azerbaijan make up $ 6
billion and it’s a very serious amount for Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, about 700 Syrians crossed the border into neighboring
Lebanon, for an emergency situation in the country. Most of the
refugees are women and children. And they are all running into
Lebanon, a country with unstable home policy, because nobody knows
where the confrontation between the opposition and the Baath Party
will lead Syria to.

A deal for Yemen’s veteran leader to hand over power and end unrest
looks in doubt after President Ali Abdullah Saleh failed to sign it.

He had been expected to add his signature on April 30 after his
officials said the deal brokered by Gulf Arab states had been
accepted.

Mr Saleh reportedly said he would only sign the agreement in his
capacity as head of the ruling party.

Opposition spokesmen insist he must sign as president.

The Gulf states’ mediator, Abdul-Latif al-Zayyani, is now believed to
have left the capital, Sanaa, BBC reported.

Syrian authorities restore order in riot stricken-cities

May 1, 2011 – 16:32 AMT
PanARMENIAN.Net –

The Syrian authorities restored order in all riot stricken-cities, an
official source in Damascus stated. In Deraa (120 km to the south of
capital) 149 extremists have been seized during an operation on
liquidation of the armed gangs terrorizing the city.

Order was established in Homs, Latakia and suburbs of Damascus where
violent street demonstrations took place over the last days.
Representatives of the public inform about the population’s positive
response to actions of the army and security forces to suppress
attempts at provoking anarchy and religious hatred. As a Syrian MP
Mohamed Habash has declared, Syria `needs now, more than ever, serious
and responsible efforts of all citizens to strengthen national unity
in the face of external intrigues.’

On Monday, May 2, the National Council will gather for a session to
confirm a comprehensive plan on political, administrative and economic
reforms proposed by the new government of the republic, vikno.eu

Israeli Likud party calls for Armenian Genocide recognition

Israeli Likud party calls for Armenian Genocide recognition

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs should reconsider its stance
on the Armenian Genocide issue, according to Knesset member, Likud
party chairman Zeev Elkin.

`The Jewish state, which demands worldwide historical justice and
observance of ethic norms can’t itself go contrary to these
principles,’ Elkin stated when addressing a conference on the 96th
anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

`It’s side to put an end to the policy aimed exclusively to please
Turkey. The Jewish state should be among the countries which
officially recognized the Armenian Genocide,’ he said.
