Adnan Oral, a restaurant owner in Berlin, wants the Monument to
Humanity, a statue symbolizing the Armenian-Turkish friendship
dismantled in Kars after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
labeled it as `monstrosity’, to be transported to the German capital.

In an interview with Der Spiegel, Oral said, `The work is being
dismantled because Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan does not like
it. I find it intolerable that a work of art is being torn down at the
whim of a head of government and without any legitimate basis. That
has not happened in recent years in Europe.’

Asked how he is going to transport the statue which is 35 meters tall
and weighs 300 tons, he noted, `When you compare this problem to the
fate of the Armenian people, it is not so difficult.’

At first Oral is going to will store the monument privately, and then
he will ask those responsible if they can offer a worthy location for
it.

`After all, the Germans were also partially responsible for the 1915
genocide of the Armenians at the hands of the Turks,’ he said. `At
that time, German officers were advisers to the sultan in
Constantinople, and the German Reich had a great stake in Turkey’s
stability. Berlin did not do anything to prevent the murder of the
Armenians.’

As to financing of the memorial project, Oral said, `Privately and
through official sources. I will somehow manage it.’

queues to be involved in the operation,’ Sefilyan told a press
conference on May 6. `Armenians worked as a single organism those
days.’

He noted that the main task for the nation today is to unite for a common idea.

Member of Sardarapat movement Zhirayr Sefilyan said that the Armenian
side not only failed to inhabit the liberated territories of Karabakh,
but also to prevent emigration from Armenia.

`Over 30,000 people lived in Shushi in 1980s, while currently there
are less than 3,000 residents,’ Sefilyan told a press conference in
Yerevan.

He called on the nation to unite and solve the pressing problems. `It
is not late to improve the situation. During the Karabakh war, nobody
thought we can reach Arax,’ he said.

PanARMENIAN.Net –

Gagosian Gallery presents worldwide representation of John Chamberlain
with an exhibition of new sculptures by the artist, to be presented
concurrently at the 24th Street gallery in New York and the Britannia
Street gallery in London.

The show is on view from May 5 through July 8, 2011, according to artdaily.

Chamberlain is best known for his distinctive metal sculptures
constructed from discarded automobile-body parts and other modern
industrial detritus, which he began making in the late 1950s. His
singular method of putting these elements together led to his
inclusion in the paradigmatic exhibition `The Art of Assemblage,’ at
the Museum of Modern Art in 1961, where his work was shown alongside
modern masters such as Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso.

John Chamberlain was born in Rochester, Indiana. He attended the Art
Institute of Chicago (1951-1952) and Black Mountain College
(1955-1956) and moved to New York in 1956. His work is represented in
many major public collections including Chinati Foundation, Marfa,
Texas; Menil Collection, Houston; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New
York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum Ludwig,
Cologne; and Tate Modern, London. He had his first retrospective at
the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, in 1971, followed by more
than one hundred one-person exhibitions, including Dia Art Foundation
(1983); Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1986); Staatlich
Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (1991); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1996);
Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas (2005-2006); and Menil Collection,
Houston (2009). His work has been included in numerous international
survey exhibitions, including Bienal de São Paulo (1961, 1994),
Biennale di Venezia (1964), Whitney Biennial (1973, 1987), and
Documenta 7 (1982).

gouvernement.

ADL’s position on Armenian Genocide immoral, activist says

ADL’s position on Armenian Genocide immoral, activist says

May 6, 2011 – 12:59 AMT
PanARMENIAN.Net –

Human rights activist of Needham, Massachusetts, Luder Tavit Sahagian,
says he is disappointed that Clear Channel in Stoneham is providing
the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) with 100 free billboards across the
commonwealth to advance the group’s so-called anti-bullying program.

`The ADL’s immoral position on the Armenian Genocide and selective
approach to fighting genocide have undermined its ability to be a
voice for humanity and justice for all. That is why the Massachusetts
Municipal Association and a dozen cities statewide severed ties with
the ADL’s “No Place for Hate” program,’ Sahagian writes in MetroWest
Daily News.

`With the centennial commemoration of the Armenian Genocide
approaching in 2015, the national ADL must prove its commitment to
human rights and tikkun olam (Hebrew for “repairing the world”). The
ADL must stop lobbying on bullying Turkey’s behalf and instead
unambiguously recognize the Armenian Genocide and openly support a
congressional resolution on this crime,’ he writes.

`Clear Channel should heed its own Code of Conduct about not
supporting political organizations and not, in effect, allocate funds
to the highly politicized ADL. The ADL’s name, logo and website on its
billboards should be replaced with those of credible anti-bullying
organizations. Clear Channel should also end its double standards and
give Peace of Art several free billboards in years to come to
commemorate the Armenian Genocide.’

Behind the Facade of Innocence

Behind the Facade of Innocence

yerkir.am

Recent documents released in Turkish archives, combined with surviving
documents from Talaat’s Pasha’s private papers, confirm that Talaat
was indeed the architect of the Armenian Genocide. There is a clear
record that he ordered and supervised the general deportation of
Ottoman Armenians in 1915-16, and that he followed the fate of such
deportees from close quarters.

Talaat was sent updates regarding Armenians at different stages of
deportations, as well as information about the fate of others who were
subjected to special treatment. Although a great deal of Ottoman
records still remain unavailable in Turkish archives, the available
records show that the Ottoman deportation thesis was a smokescreen for
the annihilation of Armenians.

Ottoman records in Turkish archives, as well as Talaat’s 1917 report,
show that less than 100,000 Armenians survived in the so-called
resettlement zone for Armenians. According to Talaat’s report on the
Armenian Genocide, most Armenians in the Ottoman Empire had
disappeared between 1915 and 1917, or they were dispersed in different
provinces of the Ottoman Empire for assimilation. The forced
assimilation of hundreds of thousands of Armenians was indicative of
the power, control and purpose of the Ottoman state.

Talaat Pasha’s Report on the Armenian Genocide, 1917 is the closest
official Ottoman view we have of the Armenian Genocide. The report was
undoubtedly prepared for Talaat Pasha and meant for his private use.
It was not meant for publication and probably only survived because
Talaat was assassinated in 1921 and his widow gave the report to a
Turkish historian who eventually published it.

No such record has been released by Turkish archives to date, though
the data presented in the 1917 report can be checked against the
available Ottoman records and stands scrutiny.

According to Talaat’s figures 1,150,000 Armenians disappeared in the
Ottoman Empire between 1915-1917. This number includes well over
100,000 Armenians who fled from the Ottoman Empire in 1915 (and died
in large numbers from hunger, exposure and disease), but it does not
include tens of thousands of Armenian women and children who were
absorbed into Muslim families or placed into state orphanages for
assimilation
