Armenians in Mumbai: A 200-year history

Zabel Joshi (nee Hayakian), now Mumbai’s last surviving Armenian, was
raised as a Lebanese Armenian in Beirut. She met her husband, a
Mumbai-based cloth merchant, on one of his numerous business trips to
that city. She married at 23 and moved to Mumbai in 1972 and now
speaks fluent Armenian, Arabic, Turkish, English, Gujarati, Hindi and
Marathi.

The Armenians have a large diaspora spread around the world. The
Indian Armenians, though a small community, have been influential
merchants and jewellery traders who have set up churches, clubs and
educational institutions in port cities such as Kolkata, Chennai and
Mumbai. In Mumbai, however, Joshi is now the sole trustee of the
215-year-old St Peter’s Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church in Fort,
where her three daughters were baptised.

`The Archbishop of Australia came to baptise me, and my pictures had
come in the papers,’ said Joshi’s youngest daughter, actor Tulip
Joshi, who is not a practicing Armenian Christian but has fond
memories of get-togethers with Mumbai’s close-knit Armenian community
at the church.

Today, though the church is being renovated with funds from the
Armenian community in Kolkata, it has no priest and no Armenian prayer
services. A few years ago, Joshi opened up the premises to the city’s
Syrian Orthodox Christians.

`Their beliefs are similar to ours, and it is important that the
church not go empty,’ said Joshi. Besides Joshi’s daughters, Mumbai
still houses a few people of Indo-Armenian ancestry, descendents of
Armenians who fled to India at the time of World War I. `Like the
Jews, Armenians were also persecuted by the Turkish and were thus
always on the run,’ said Marion Arathoon, a journalist whose paternal
grandfather was an Armenian who settled in Lahore.

While retaining their ethnic language and culture, most Armenian
migrants have adopted India as warmly as India has adopted them. `I
have been to Armenia several times and travel to Beirut every year,
but today I consider myself truly Indian,’ said Joshi.

Armenia to hold second congress of World Youth of Armenian Church

YEREVAN. – Armenia will hold second congress of the World Youth
Organization of the Armenian Church on July 7-10. The congress will be
held in Echmiadzin and Tsakhkadzor cities, press service of Armenian
Apostolic Church (AAC) informs Armenian News-NEWS.am.

The organization is run under the patronage of Armenian Apostolic
Church and coordinates relations between AAC and youth. About 150
young people from 30 countries will participate in the congress .

Ahmadinejad’s visit to Armenia put off due to technical reasons-Iranian Speaker

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to Armenia has been
postponed for technical reasons, Iranian Speaker Ali Larijani told a
press conference following talks in Baku.

Responding to a question on prospects for deployment of peacekeeping
forces in Nagorno-Karabakh, Larijani said that the issue did not
affect the cancellation of Ahmadinejad’s scheduled visit to Armenia,
SalamNews reports.

As reported earlier, Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad put off his
visit to Armenia on June 6.

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will surely visit Armenia in the
near future, said Ramin Mehmanparast, Spokesperson for the Iranian
Foreign Ministry.

Iran urges regional solution to Karabakh

Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani has urged regional
countries to step up efforts to help resolve regional issues,
including the Karabakh dispute, without interference of foreign
powers.

`In our opinion, regional countries’ determination and effort can
resolve the Karabakh dispute. We hope that regional efforts increase
so that [regional] conflicts are settled,’ Larijani said in a Friday
meeting with Azeri Prime Minister Artur Rasizade, IRNA reported.

Larijani, at the head of a parliamentary delegation, is on a visit to
Baku to hold meetings with top Azeri officials.

The senior Iranian official pointed out that the mutual interests of
the two countries demand that regional issues be solved without any
foreign interference, reiterating that foreign powers seek their own
interests in regional conflicts.

He also said that Iran supports Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity in
the Karabakh dispute.

Rasizade, for his part, thanked Iran’s stance in the Karabakh dispute
and hoped that the issue would be solved.

Both Azerbaijan and Armenia claim the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh,
which is largely populated by Armenians but located in Azerbaijan.

Ethnic Armenian forces took control over 16 percent of Azerbaijan in
the early 1990s during a six-year war with the country that took place
from February 1988 to May 1994.

The conflict left an estimated 30,000 people dead and one million
displaced. The dispute still remains unsettled.

The Islamic Republic has on several occasions offered to intervene in
the dispute.

“We believe that the Karabakh issue will be resolved through dialogue
and the commitment of both sides to justice, and Tehran is ready to
negotiate with them within this framework,” Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad said in a joint press conference with his Azerbaijani
counterpart Ilham Aliyev in November, 2010.

200 instances of ceasefire violation by Azeri armed forces reported
June 25-July 2

PanARMENIAN.Net – Over the last week, about 200 instances of ceasefire
violation by the Azerbaijani armed forces were reported, with 900
shots fired.

The fire was stopped due to retaliatory measures taken by Karabakh
armed forces. No losses on Armenian side were reported, according to
NKR defence army press service.

Ali Larijani: U.S., West turned Iran nuclear program talks into show

PanARMENIAN.Net – The United States and other Western countries have
turned the negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program into a political
show, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said at a
press-conference in Baku.

“The U.S. and other Western countries have turned the talks into a
political show, as they don’t understand their essence,” Larijani
said.” We welcome the negotiations between Iran and Western
countries.”

He said the negotiations should be conducted under conditions accepted
by both parties, and the U.S. is using them as a tool to achieve its
goals, Trend News reported.

Iran’s nuclear program has caused concern since 2003, when the IAEA
became aware of its concealed activity. In late 2003, Iran signed the
Additional Protocol to the NPT and voluntarily announced about the
suspension of uranium enrichment. However, it returned to this
activity. Iran insists that as a party to the NPT it has the full
right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The enriched uranium can be used to produce nuclear weapons. However,
it is necessary as fuel for atomic power plants. Several countries,
including the U.S., are sure that Iran strives to develop nuclear
weapons and call for the prevention of this development.

Tehran has denied all charges, saying that its nuclear program has
peaceful purposes. Until now, the UN Security Council adopted six
resolutions to stop the nuclear program of Iran and the process of
enriching uranium. Four of these resolutions provide economic
sanctions against the country.

Following a 14-month break, the talks on Iran’s nuclear program
between The Six (five UNSC permanent members – the United States,
China, Russia, France, Great Britain – and Germany) and Iran took
place in 2010 in Geneva in December. The next round of discussions
took place in Istanbul on Jan. 21-22, 2011. Catherine Ashton chaired
the meeting.

After the Istanbul talks, Ashton stated that she is disappointed with
the results of discussions held over Iran’s nuclear program.

More changes needed in the Armenian Constitution, Paruyr Hayrikyan says

The Armenian Constitution will turn 16 on June 5. `Every schoolboy
should know that the Constitution lies in the basis of any national
program,’ President of the National Self-Determination Union Paruyr
Hayrikyan told reporters today, adding, however, that due attention
has not been paid to the Constitution throughout the history of its
development.

According to Hayrikyan, in 1995 the Constitution was written for the
then authorities. `They wrote the Constitution for themselves.”
According to him, the President could dissolve the National Assembly
any moment.

However, the Basic Law was amended in 1998, and the President was
deprived of the right to dissolve the Parliament arbitrarily. Another
change, which is no less important, was that every citizen was granted
the right to apply to the Constitutional Court.

Despite a number of amendments have been implemented, Parutyr
Hayrikyan says more changes are still necessary. According to him, the
procedure of formation of the National Assembly should be
strengthened. “Besides, there should be a clear division between the
branches of power,’ he said.

Georgian Parliament votes to grant a legal status to eth Armenian
Apostolic Church

The Georgian Parliament introduced amendments to the Civil Code,
according to which five religious groups were granted legal status,
Novosti-Georgia reports.

Legal status was given to the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Roman
Catholic Church, the Muslim community, the Jewish community and the
Baptist church in Georgia.

The oppositional `Christian-Democrats’ faction voted against the bill.
`The Georgian Church does not have a similar status. We need to
understand whether Azerbaijan and Armenia will grant the same status
to the Georgian church,’ member of faction Nikoloz Laliashvili stated.

However, according to officials, the bill does not reduce the role of
the Georgian Orthodox Church. `Granting legal status does not provide
special rights and the Georgian church maintains the highest status,’
Vice-Speaker Gigi Tsereteli noted.

Son Eminence Monseigneur Nareg Alemezian a ete invite par Mgr
Bernard Barsi de Monaco pour assister a une messe celebrant le 100
ème anniversaire de la cathedrale de Monaco.

Avant la messe, l’archeveque Nareg a rencontre l’archeveque et
lui a transmis les salutations de Sa Saintete Aram I. Les deux
ecclesiastiques ont ensuite discute du Saint-Siège de Cilicie, de
sa contribution au mouvement ~cumenique et de ses relations avec
l’Eglise catholique romaine. Ils ont egalement parle de la recente
revolution sociale au Moyen-Orient et de la situation des chretiens
dans la region.

Pendant son sejour a Monaco, Mgr Nareg a ete l’invite du pretre
anglican Mgr Raymond Walter. Dimanche 12 juin il frequentait l’eglise
anglicane et a la fin du service il lui a ete demande de livrer un
message a la congregation.
