WITHDRAWAL OF ARMENIAN-TURKISH PROTOCOLS FROM AGENDA OF PARLIAMENT IS PREROGATIVE OF PRESIDENT -ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT SPEAKER

YEREVAN. – Armenian-Turkish protocols can be withdrawn from the agenda
only by the President Serzh Sargsyan, as it is his exclusive right,
Armenian parliament speaker Hovik Abrahamyan said in response to the
question by oppositional ARF Dashnaktsutyun MP Armen Rustamyan. The
latter asked whether it is better to withdraw the protocols from
the agenda of the parliament after they were withdrawn from Turkish
parliament agenda.

“Armenian president has the right to withdraw the protocols. The
protocols have not been removed from the Turkish parliament. They
were left out as new parliament was established. I believe that
our president is well aware of political processes in Turkey,”
Abrahamyan said and added that the President Sargsyan will adopt a
better approach in case Turkish government does not offer to include
the protocols in the agenda.

However, Armenian parliament speaker is ready to ask the president
to withdraw to protocols, if coalition powers and all parliamentary
fractions decide there is necessity to turn to the president.

PROCEEDS FROM CANDLE SALE AT AKHTAMAR~RS SURB KHACH ARMENIAN CHURCH WILL BE DONATED TO SOMALIA

VAN. – After last year, the second Holy Mass was celebrated on Sunday
at Surb Khach (Holy Cross) Armenian church on Akhtamar Island in Van.

The Turkish police and gendarmerie carried out a very tight security
during the event, which took place without any incidents.

In comparison with the year past, those who attended this year’s
Holy Liturgy were considerably less, but this time the Holy Cross was
placed on the church and there were more pilgrims from Armenia. During
the mass, there were approximately 2,000 people on the island, but
people continued to visit throughout the day, Armenian News-NEWS.am’s
reporter informed from Van.

The port, which carries out boat service between Akhtamar Island and
the mainland, was renovated and new boats were added. The first thing
that caught the eye upon approaching the island is the Turkish flags,
which were nonexistent last year. Also, there were less media covering
the event this year, and the Turkish TRT state television was carrying
out live broadcasts.

Also this year, great number of pilgrims was able to enter the church,
as this was not the case last year because of the invited officials.

To note, proceeds from the candle sale at the church will be donated
to Somalia relief.

During the Holy Mass, around 10 extreme nationalists held a protest at
the port of Akhtamar, read a statement, waved Turkish and Azerbaijani
flags, and left.

In comparison with 2010, the city of Van was more passive; many did
not even know as to the date and time of the Holy Liturgy.

No Armenian official attended this event. In addition, Armenian
Deputy Patriarch of Constantinople, Archbishop Aram Ateshyan, had
stated that no invitations were to be made this year, underscoring
that the Holy Cross is on the church this time, and therefore there
is no reason not to attend the Holy Mass.

BAKU: Azerbaijan To Rely On National Interests In UN Security Counci

AZERBAIJAN TO RELY ON NATIONAL INTERESTS IN UN SECURITY COUNCIL

News.az
Sept 12 2011
Azerbaijan

‘Armenians launched a campaign to counter Azerbaijan’.

It is not the first time that Armenians are trying to speak on the
issue of Azerbaijan’s participation in elections for seat as UN
Security Council non-permanent member at different levels.

The statement came from permanent representative to Azerbaijan to
UN Agshin Mehdiyev while commenting on Armenian foreign minister’s
remarks about Azerbaijan’s participation in elections for a seat as
non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

‘First and foremost, I would say for those who do not know that
until recently Armenia was the fourth candidate from our group for
this seat at the Security Council. However, realizing that they are
in no way able to resist Azerbaijan in the upcoming elections, the
Armenians decided to withdraw their candidacy. Perhaps, it was the
right decision on their part, because they had zero chances…’ he
said, Trend news agency reports.

Staying true to themselves, the Armenians were not limited to this
and launched a campaign to counter Azerbaijan, the envoy added.

‘Permanent representatives of several countries have complained that
Armenians were trying to influence them so that they do not support
the candidacy of our country. We have also been told that official
bodies of Armenia also make attempts to blackmail some countries in
this matter. I can not help recalling lap-dog from Krylov’s fables,
which, seeking to demonstrate its “power”, starts barking at an
elephant, not thinking what it may end up with,’ Mehdiyev said.

‘Regarding the recent Armenian comments, one of the great men said
“nonsense is a gift from God, but one should not misuse it…” But
Armenians have clearly overdone…

As far as I know no one in Azerbaijan has ever said that in case
of election we are going to represent there EU interests somehow,
or something like that. If Azerbaijan is elected to the Security
Council, our activities there will be based on national interests of
our country. This is a cornerstone of our foreign policy. Of course,
we will take into consideration interests of organizations in which
Azerbaijan has membership. This is Organization of Islamic Cooperation,
Non-Aligned Movement, etc,’ he said.

Sassounian: Book On Protocols Warns Arabs Not To Trust Turkish Frien

SASSOUNIAN: BOOK ON PROTOCOLS WARNS ARABS NOT TO TRUST TURKISH FRIENDSHIP
Harut Sassounian

Sep 12, 2011

I was privileged to attend a special program in Beirut last Friday,
sponsored by the Armenian National Committee (ANC) of Lebanon and
dedicated to the publication of my new book in Arabic, Armenia-Turkey
Protocols: Truth or Deception? The book is the compilation of 43
columns I had written in the California Courier in the last three
years on the controversial protocols.

After introductory remarks by George Sabounjian of the local ANC,
Dr. Nora Arissian of Damascus, Syria, the translator of the book,
asserted that the columns had exposed the Turkish government’s fake
intent. She reminded the audience that the author had accurately
predicted at the outset of the negotiations that Turkey would not keep
its promise to ratify the protocols and lift the blockade of Armenia.

Arissian was followed by veteran Lebanese Minister Michel Edde, who
had written a lengthy and insightful introduction to the book. Edde
held five ministerial posts during his long and distinguished career
in various Lebanese cabinets. In his remarks, he commended the author
for his analytical columns, praised the Armenian community of Lebanon
for its active role in the country’s progress, and condemned Turkey
for its denial of the Armenian Genocide. At the end of his remarks,
Edde surprised the audience by announcing a generous and unexpected
personal contribution of $25,000 to the ANC of Lebanon.

The evening’s program was conducted in Arabic, given the fact that
there were Arab guests in the audience and the book was intended
for Arab leaders and masses. I was gratified to be able to deliver
a portion of my remarks in Arabic. Surprisingly, I still remembered
the Arabic I had learned over 40 years ago as a student at the local
Sophia Hagopian High School.

I reminded the attendees that the Turkish government’s true intent
was to exploit the protocols and pressure Armenia into giving up its
pursuit of the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, and
create a smokescreen of peaceful negotiations so that other countries,
particularly the United States, would be warned not to undermine the
make-believe reconciliation and budding relationship by recognizing
the genocide.

In addition, Turkey wanted Armenia to return Nagorno Karabagh (Artsakh)
to Azerbaijan’s control and give up its demands for Western Armenia
(which is currently under Turkish occupation), and tried to undermine
overall Armenian unity by pitting the diaspora against the homeland.

Doggedly pursuing its intent to extract additional concessions from
Armenia, the Turkish government kept refusing to ratify the protocols
it had signed two years ago. Failing to accomplish its self-serving
objectives, the Turkish Parliament recently took the final step to kill
the protocols by removing them from its agenda, citing a technicality.

This failed experiment of the Armenia-Turkey protocols clearly proves
that Turkey is more interested in playing diplomatic games and creating
false impressions than pursuing peaceful co-existence.

Turkish commitments cannot be taken seriously and Turkey’s leaders’
signatures on international agreements are not worth the paper they
are written on.

In my remarks, I pointed out that Turkish leaders have been presenting
themselves as defenders of the Palestinian cause, and supporters of
all Arabs and Muslims, while continuing to be Israel’s strategic
partner, and covertly sharing with it some of the most sensitive
military secrets of Arab countries.

In my opinion, Palestinians and Arabs in general do not need the fake
friendship of Turkey’s neo-Ottoman leaders. The Arab masses must demand
that their own indigenous leaders, not self-serving foreign rulers,
defend their national interests.

We just saw how Turkey sided with the despotic regimes in Egypt
and Libya until the very last moment, when the dictators of these
countries were about to be toppled. This is not genuine friendship.

This is crass opportunism.

Since Arabs and Armenians have both experienced horrendous suffering
and atrocities under the Ottoman yoke, they cannot be easily fooled
by dishonest Turkish gestures of rapprochement. The survivors of the
Armenian Genocide were the grateful beneficiaries of Arab hospitality
throughout the Middle East. Without such humanitarian intervention,
many more Armenians would have perished.

I ended my remarks by expressing my gratitude to Minister Edde for
writing an inspiring introduction to my book, and to Arissian, who
spent countless hours painstakingly translating it (as well as my
previous book on the Armenian Genocide) from English to Arabic. I
also thanked the ANC of Lebanon for hosting the evening’s program at
the Pyunic Hall of Aztag newspaper, and the Hamazkayin Publishing
House for publishing the book. I expressed my special gratitude to
benefactor Gabriel Chemberjian and his Pyunic Foundation for sponsoring
the book’s translation and publication. At the end of the program,
signed copies of the book were distributed to the guests.

Samedi 10 Septembre 2011

Tel-Aviv promet d’aider les Kurdes et les Arméniens;
