ARMENIAN RULING COALITION PARTY MP DENIES THAT THE PERSON WHO BEAT A POLICE OFFICER WAS HIS BODYGUARD

News from Armenia – NEWS.am

YEREVAN. – The ruling coalition’s Prosperous Armenia Party MP Martun
Grigoryan denies the information that Getap village resident Anushavan
Baghdasaryan-one of the persons who was involved in the shots fired
at an Artik city cafe on Tuesday-is his, or his father’s, bodyguard.

“I know Anushavan, but he has no connection with me. I do not have
a bodyguard,” Martun Grigoryan himself told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

The Police Force is currently preparing material on the incident.

To note, according to Artik residents, Anushavan Baghdasaryan is a
member of Martun Grigoryan’s and his father’s security personnel.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am informed earlier, shots were fired Tuesday
evening in Armenia’s Artik city, Hraparak daily wrote. “The shots were
preceded by a brutal fight also involving a police officer. According
to our source, a group of men had approached the officer, had a short
conversation, and then took him into their car and disappeared. The
same group continued the ‘skirmish’ at a place in Artik, where a
fight broke shortly thereafter. The group severely beat the police
officer, who fired shots in the direction of the group. According
to our source, the group’s ‘ringleader,’ a certain Anushavan-who,
according to Artik residents, is a close associate of [the ruling
coalition’s Prosperous Armenia Party] PAP MP Martunik Grigoryan-was
shot in the foot. Anushavan, with an injured foot and together with
his friends, pursued the police officer who, while escaping, was
firing shots outside into the air. We learned that the argument had
begun when the group had attempted to settle scores with the police
officer, concerning a matter in connection with the officer’s brother,”
Hraparak wrote.

‘COMMON VALUES SHOULD BE THE CORE OF CHRISTIAN-MUSLIM CONVIVIALITY’
SAID ARAM I TO MUSLIM CLERICS

On Monday 9 January 2012, a delegation composed of Sunni and Shi’a clerics
visited His Holiness Aram I. The visit lasted for more than an hour, during
which they discussed the importance of strengthening relations between
Christianity and Islam by emphasizing common religious values. His Holiness
said. “As followers of Monotheistic religions, we have shaped our thoughts,
traditions and cultures according to our religious values; living together
has helped us identify common values. We should insist once more that these
common values become the foundation for our conviviality.”

The clerics, who agreed that the two religions should strengthen their
relationship, added their view that “the strong presence of the West in the
Middle East, with its values and life-style was having a negative impact on
the region, on family life and the youth.” They then proposed to meet more
often with His Holiness Aram I and continue reflections. As a first step His
Holiness proposed that institutions of theological education organize
lectures on Christianity and Islam by exchanging faculty.

The Hayastan All-Armenian Fund recently completed an extensive
renovation of the Nephrology and Dialysis departments of Yerevan’s
St. Gregory the Illuminator (Surb Grigor Lusavorich) Hospital. The
refurbishment was made possible by the fund’s Toronto affiliate (with
sponsorship of a Toronto-based benefactor), within the framework of
2011 projects implemented through sponsor-specified grants.

The renovated premises, encompassing a total area of 1,120 square
meters, include eight patient rooms, a cafeteria, two offices, and
all restrooms. In addition, the power and water systems have been
replaced and a central-heating system was installed. Both upgraded
departments have been fully operational since mid-December.

Dr. Razmik Pandunts, who heads the Nephrology and Dialysis departments,
had high praise for the quality of the upgrades as he conveyed
his gratitude to the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund. “Without a doubt,
our staff has been delighted to work in such beautifully renovated
facilities,” Dr. Pandunts said. “This new environment is also having
a visibly positive effect on our patients.”

The Nephrology and Dialysis departments employ a staff of 36, including
six doctors and 30 nurses. Today some 55 patients receive treatment
at the two wings, which together have the capacity to serve up to 80
patients at a time.

The Hayastan All-Armenian Fund is currently carrying out two other
projects sponsored by its Toronto affiliate: the complete renovation of
the third and fourth floors of the Nork Retirement Home, in Yerevan;
and the refurbishment of the Education and Cultural Centre of Shushi,
Artsakh.

Commenting on the completion of the St. Gregory Hospital project
and other initiatives sponsored by the Toronto affiliate, Mkrtich
Mkrtichian, its chairman, said, “We are extremely gratified by the
fact that the Armenian community of Toronto is doing its utmost to
be of assistance to our sisters and brothers in the homeland.”

Irak : L’accord Avec ExxonMobil Est Bon Pour Tout Le Pays (Responsab

Slovakia Discusses Armenian Genocide Issue In The Context Of Turkey’

SLOVAKIA DISCUSSES ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ISSUE IN THE CONTEXT OF TURKEY’S AFFILIATION WITH EU

ARMENPRESS
JANUARY 10, 2011
YEREVAN

Slovakia goes on insisting that before affiliation with the European
Union, Turkey should respect all the forwarded standards. Policy
advisor to the president of the National Council of Slovak Republic
Tomas Zalesak told Armenpress that Slovakia’s position on Turkey’s
affiliation with EU was discussed at that country’s parliament in
the context of recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

“Within the course of existence of the National Council of Slovakia,
we have adopted a number of declarations concerning genocides and
their denial,” Zalesak said. He noted that Slovakia’s parliament has
also adopted declarations on the Jewish Holocaust, dislodging, etc.

The National Council of Slovakia has adopted the 1341 resolution on
Armenian Genocide November 30, 2004. The resolution mentions that the
National Council of the Slovak Republic acknowledges the 1915 events
as Armenian Genocide, crime committed against mankind. In that context
Zalesak also recalled another resolution, which manifests Slovakia’s
position toward the talks over Turkey’s affiliation with the European
Union. It mentions that the members of the Slovak government must
support the position, which will make Turkey respect the importance
of the forwarded standards in the negotiations, without which Turkey
cannot become a full member of European Union.

Besides that, Zalesak noted that the agenda of the Slovak parliament
includes a legislative initiative, which defines a criminal
responsibility for denial of genocides.

Insincere Turkey

INSINCERE TURKEY

Keghart.com
Team Editorial,
10 January 2012

When one considers the long list of reasons why Arab countries cannot
trust Turkey Recep Erdogan’s vaulting ambition to lead the Arab World
becomes a patently psychiatric case. The prime minister of Turkey
and his voluble cohort Ahmet Davutoglu must be the only persons in
the world who believe Arabs-states and people–will buy the “new,
improved Turkey.”

Arab culture values and nurses long memory. While for Western countries
the First World War is ancient history, for Arabs the Crusades are a
relatively recent invasion-so is the brutal 500-year Turkish occupation
of Arab countries. Arabs remember their martyrs who were slain by
the Turks during WWI and in the decades prior to that war. It’s for
these reasons that few Arab states have had warm relations with the
Republic of Turkey since the early ’20s. That Turkey was among the
first countries to recognize Israel, and provided that country with
essential foods in the late ’40s is another reason why most Arab states
have maintained correct-rather than warm-relations with Ankara. This
feeling is shared by Arab people whether they live in monarchies,
military dictatorships or socialist republics.

Many Arabs also feel insulted by Turkey’s decision to replace the
Arabic alphabet with Latin letters. The switch, by Ataturk, is
particularly galling to Arabs because to this day Turkey and Turks
boast that they had dispensed with the “primitive” Arabic alphabet and
adopted the “progressive” Latin alphabet. In the same breath Turks
also claim that they had banned the Arab fez because the headgear
was a symbol of Arab “backwardness.” It’s no secret that Ataturk’s
decision was intended to symbolize Turkey veering its gaze toward
the West and disassociate itself from the Arabs and the East. The
culmination of this aspiration is the decades’ long Turkish effort
to join the European Union. Now, after playing the rejected lover to
Europe, Turkey is turning its glance toward the Middle East. Arabs,
of course, know about Turkey’s failed tango with Europe. Any Arab
with integrity would refuse to be Turkey’s second-choice suitor.

Arabs-a proud people despite their many collective failures in the
20th century-believe that three non-Arab Middle Eastern states want
to dominate the region. Turkey is one of the trio which includes Iran
and Israel. When Arabs have fought Israel and Iran to make sure those
two countries fail in their imperial designs, there’s no reason why
they would tolerate domination by Turkey-a country whose cruel yoke
they bore for half a millennium.

The 22 Arab states have a population of 355 million. Turkey has a
population of 75 million. Egypt, with 82 million people, has a bigger
population than Turkey. When 15 million Kurds-who have no love for
Turkey-are discounted from that country’s population Turkey becomes
a madly ambitious frog which wants to swallow the cow.

The choice of the “cow” descriptive is not accidental. Turkey considers
the Arab countries fat cows ready to be milked. As well, to this day
many Turks refer to Arabs as “hayvan” (animal) or “esshek” (ass).

Soon after the termination of WWI, Sharif Hussein of Mecca (the leader
of the Arab Revolt) and later his son, Emir Abdullah of Transjordan,
tried to become leaders of the Arab world. They failed, just as
Egypt’s President Gamal Abdel Nasser did in the ’50s and the ’60s.

Arab states and people refuse to have a single leader representing them
from the Atlantic to the Gulf. Why would they accept the leadership
of a foreign and untrustworthy Turkey when they have refused single
leadership by one of their own? Not just foreign leader but an
irascible, double-talking braggart called Erdogan.

Well-informed, sophisticated Arabs also know that Turkey still nurtures
its racist Turanic Empire dream–one Turkic state from the Bosporus
to Bhutan and the Chinese border. This imperial and exclusivist dream
is a nightmare for any thinking Arab.

Erdogan, Davutoglu and Gul (“The Three Tenors”) are marketing Turkey
as a progressive force and country which would help Arab achieve
democracy, tolerance, equality… Yet one look at the Middle Eastern
headlines reveals that Turkey continues to kill Kurds and mistreat
millions of Turks, in addition to millions of Alevis, Armenians,
Assyrians, Greeks, Jews, and Zazas. Even Turks-hounded by various
unjust laws-are far from being free people.

Arabs have yet another reason to suspect Turkey’s goodwill. A glaring
characteristic of Turkey’s (Ottoman and current) strategy and policies
in the past two centuries has been what North Americas Native Nations
call “talking with a forked tongue.” Double speak, in other words.

Turkey says one thing and does another. Threatened by European powers,
Ottoman Turkey promised reforms and a democratic constitution in the
19th century. Instead, the empire’s minorities were persecuted and
many of them slain or deported to create a homogenous Turkish country.

Ataturk’s “modern” Turkey continued the dishonest policy… became
friends with the Soviet Union then became an ally of USSR’s foes.

Pretending to be a democracy, modern Turkey has been a dictatorship
for most of its recent history. It remained neutral during WWII
but declared war on Germany a few months before the defeat of
that country. It was friendly with Israel while pretending to be a
Moslem country sympathetic to Moslem interests. These days Turkey is
“friendly” with the West while remaining friendly with Iran-the West’s
enemy. Erdogan’s foreign minister-Ahmet Davutlogul-pontificates about
Turkey’s foreign policy of “zero problems with neighbors” while at
the same time preaching neo-Ottomanism-a policy which by its very
definition-would be unfriendly to the Arabs.

It’s the height of hubris for a state like Turkey to imagine that it
can become Big Brother to a people who have contributed a thousand
times more to human civilization than the violent loudmouths of Ankara.

Finally, a country where “Armenian” is considered a swear word, a
word politicians deploy to destroy the career of a rival can’t call
itself a country which others should consider a sincere, tolerant,
progressive or admirable.

Congressman Schiff To Meet With Hollywood Armenian Community

CONGRESSMAN SCHIFF TO MEET WITH HOLLYWOOD ARMENIAN COMMUNITY

ARMRADIO.AM
10.01.2012 11:31

The Armenian National Committee of America, Hollywood Chapter, is proud
to introduce Congressman Adam Schiff to the Hollywood Armenian-American
community in a Town Hall on the evening of Sunday, January 15th.

The new lines drawn by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission
have included Hollywood in Schiff’s new district.

“The Town Hall is an opportune moment for the leaders and members
of the Little Armenia and Hollywood communities to approach the
Congressman with their concerns and questions,” said ANCA-Hollywood
chairman Paul Seradarian.

The ANCA-Hollywood is calling on members of the Hollywood
Armenian-American community, one of the oldest and most storied in Los
Angeles, to have a strong presence at the Town Hall so that they may
meet the congressman and use the opportunity to discuss any prevailing
issues with him.

“We urge anyone who has an interest in the Little Armenia/Hollywood
community to attend, as only a diverse group of attendees would
accurately represent the Hollywood constituency and signal to the
congressman the wide range of issues that have been afflicting
Hollywood residents for too long,” said board member Tereza Yerimyan.

Armenian-American political activists, members of neighborhood
councils, business leaders and entrepreneurs, students from local
Armenian and public schools, and older residents who use community
services are all urged to attend.

The newly established California Citizens Redistricting Commission,
which oversees redistricting in California, redrew congressional
district lines and, with regular input by the ANCA-Western Region at
public hearings, incorporated Little Armenia and East Hollywood into
the district that Congressman Schiff, if reelected, would represent.

“For years now, Congressman Schiff has stood by the Armenian American
communities he serves, sponsoring the Armenian Genocide Resolution
in the House and supporting us on a host of other issues. Meeting
him, sharing with him concerns particular to our Hollywood Armenian
community, and introducing him to our community is certainly exciting
for us,” said ANCA-Hollywood board member Srbui Karapetian.

Noted Astronaut To Join Schiff At Chamlian School

NOTED ASTRONAUT TO JOIN SCHIFF AT CHAMLIAN SCHOOL

Astronaut Gregory Chamitoff

GLENDALE-The Chamlian Armenian School announced that NASA Astronaut,
Gregory Errol Chamitoff (Ph.D.), will be visiting the school’s 4th
to 8th grade students at the Chamlian Campus on Friday, January 13.

It all began with a letter written to Congressman Adam Schiff by Shant
Armenian, a 4th grade Chamlian student, and Sidewalk Astronomy Club
member. Shant has always held a great interest in astronomy and the
exploration of space.

In the letter, Shant communicated that he and his classmates would
love for an astronaut to visit Chamlian and share his experiences
in space. Congressman Schiff responded to Shant’s email with a phone
message. He mentioned that he was able to arrange for NASA astronaut,
Gregory Errol Chamitoff, to visit Chamlian. “Thank you for writing to
me,” Congressman Schiff said, “I look forward to meeting and sharing
this great experience with you.”

Shant Armenian, the 4th-grader who started it all!

Gregory Errol Chamitoff served as the Flight Engineer and Science
Officer for a 6-month mission abroad the International Space
Station in 2008 and was appointed as a Mission Specialist on the
last flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour in 2011. Dr. Chamitoff flew
to the International Space Station on STS-124, launching on May 31
2008. He was in space 198 days and returned to Earth on November 30,
2008 on STS-126. Chamitoff also served as a mission specialist on the
STS-134 mission. A member of the California Astronaut Hall of Fame,
he holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from California Polytechnic
State University, an M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from Caltech,
and a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT.

He will speak to the students about the space program and his
experiences as a NASA Astronaut.

“It’s not every day that students get a chance to meet and hear
first hand experiences from an astronaut”, mentioned Communications
Coordinator, Lara Hovsepian. “It will be an honor to take part in
this unprecedented event”.

“There is something magical that happens when students get to interact
with astronauts,” said Schiff, who has sponsored other astronaut
visits to area schools. “The kids are inspired and they are better
able to understand the critical importance of math and science,
subjects where American students lag behind those in other countries.”

Schiff serves on the House Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee
on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (including
jurisdiction over NASA’s budget).

Will Erdogan Manage?

WILL ERDOGAN MANAGE?

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan met his Norwegian
counterpart who visited Ankara and then held a joint press conference
with him. Bill on criminalization of denial of Armenia Genocide
accepted by French Senate was also on agenda.

According to CNN Turk one of the journalists reminded Erdogan that he
published a list of sanctions against France after French NA accepted
the bill. And now it is known that French Senate will discuss the
bill on December 23. The journalist wanted to know whether Turkey
was going to hold other steps towards the issue as well.

Erdogan answered that Turkey would follow the eight sanctions which
have already been published. He again asked French diplomats not to
discuss such bills and leave the issue to the historians.

Remind the list of sanctions by Turkey:

Turkish Ambassador is called back from Paris (by the way he is already
sent back).

Military, financial, economical and other types of cooperation are
cut off.

Joint military exercises are delayed.

All political consultations with France are delayed.

French military planes must get permission for every flight.

Cooperation with France will not be included in the frame of
cooperation with the EU ~UFrench military ships will not have
permission to enter to the Turkish ports.

Turkish side will not participate in the Turkey-France economical
conference planned on 2012.

Besides this a Turkish company began to manufacture baby diapers,
trash bags, toilet paper and paper handkerchiefs in branded name
Sarkozy, President of French Republic.

Turks tried to use another strong factor against France: they call on
French side to recognize the own Genocide and apologize for it. But
Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia urged Turkey to stop trying
to make political capital out of France’s killing of thousands of
Algerians during the colonial period.

French side just asked Turkey to respect their decisions.

Speaker of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek announced that
Turkish-French relations can not become pan-European and two countries
must settle their problems themselves.

Remind, that French Senate will discuss the bill on criminalization
of Armenian Genocide denial on January 23. If it is approved the bill
will be presented to the French President to be signed.
