US ANALYST: “IF IT IS POSSIBLE FOR AZERBAIJAN TO REMAIN NEUTRAL BETWEEN THE WEST AND IRAN, IT WOULD NOT BE HURT”

“The question of the American invasion to Iran depends on who wins
the next election”.

Washington. Isabel Levine – APA. Xandra Kayden, a popular American
political scientist and a senior fellow at the School of Public Affairs
at the UCLA, also member of the Board of the League of Women Voters
of the US, believes that the West might be able to play a stronger
role in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

In an interview with APA’s correspondent she mentioned that the
biggest problem for Azerbaijan is the large and politically active
Armenian population that has lived in the US for generations.

In the meanwhile, the analyst believes that the West’s interest in
the region is to prevent the re-emergence of the Soviet Union and a
return to the Cold War climate.

“Insofar as the small republics seek to retain their independence,
they fit nicely with the West’s fear of the return to the past.

Perhaps the greatest threat is the lack of many strong partnerships,
and inter-action between the independent republics and the West”,
she said.

Speaking about the South Caucasus’s future integration into the
Euro-Atlantic structures, the analyst pointed out that there needs to
be a greater interaction between the people in the South Caucuses and
the West: students studying in the US, tours of region organized for
the leaders of relevant populations, strong business relationships
that involve partnerships for both sides.

“A stronger, wealthier, and better educated South Caucus region
would be an important buffer between the interests of Russia and its
potential allies who would seek to destabilize the Middle East. This
is suggests something of a shadow of the Cold War. Perhaps it will
take another generation to completely put it to rest. Perhaps not”,
she added.

In the meanwhile, Ms. Kayden worries about the negative sources of
potential destabilization in the region including a fundamentalist
rise to power, which doesn’t seem likely at the moment.

“A force for stabilization, on the other hand, would be greater
standing of women in the region in local economies and the general
culture”, she added.

Asked how serious the threat against Iran is at the moment, she said,
the fear of nuclear power in unstable societies keeps many Western
leaders awake at night.

“If there were an atomic attack somewhere, how would anyone really know
who was responsible, and it could be 1914 all over again in a matter
of minutes instead of a matter of months as different countries tried
to strike first before their enemies, etc. Iran – even with regime
change, should that occur – will still be hostile to the West and it
is hard to see how the slow increase of tension between Iran and the
US will subside given the absence of any apparent leader who could
lead the nation on another course”, she said.

However, she believes, the question of the American invasion to Iran
depends on who wins the next election.

“The Republican presidential candidates talk about war and taking a
strong stand, although at this point, talk is cheap and cooler heads
might prevail. If Obama is re-elected, it is highly unlikely that he
would invade Iran. There are many lessons that could be learned from
the recent past: invading tends to make local populations very uneasy,
not to say very angry; what could possibly by the plan to “take-over”
Iran; we don’t have the money or the inclination to increase the
national debt to finance a war, which would, in the end, have to
defeat a whole nation, not just a fragile elite at the top”, she added.

The analyst also reminded that Iran is too well-established as a
nation. It has a fairly strong middle class and, as a rather secular
Shia state – as is Azerbaijan – a generally more open society.

“If it is possible for Azerbaijan to remain neutral [between the West
and Iran], it would not be hurt, but I doubt that would be the case.

Both sides would press for its participation”, she added.

BAKU: Georgian Nation On The Verge Of Extinction: Ex-President

GEORGIAN NATION ON THE VERGE OF EXTINCTION: EX-PRESIDENT

Azerbaijan

Georgian Ex-President Eduard Shevarnadze is concerned over demographic
situation in the country.

“The Georgian nation is on the verge of extinction and authorities
do nothing to encourage large families,” he said in an interview with
the Asaval-Dasavali weekly.

Shevarnadze believes that Georgia is in the same position as in the
1930s, when the Georgians in the country were less than Armenians
and Azerbaijanis.

“Then, the first secretary of the Communist Party of Georgia was Kandid
Charkviani which took measures to remedy the demographic situation, so
he succeeded in that, but was accused of nationalism and removed from
office,” he noted. “The authorities also led to nation’s eradication
as a result of misunderstanding of the problem.”

The ex-president sees billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili’s coming to
power as a remedy to the situation.

“He is a pureblooded, true Georgian, and he will care of his nation,”
Shevarnadze said.

Sunday saw St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church in the Karaköy
quarter of İstanbul reopen for religious services following a six-year
period of renovation supported by SiÅ~_li Municipality Mayor Mustafa
Sarıgul.

Sarıgul was joined for the occasion by the mayor of Munich, Christian
Ude, along with Archbishop Aram AteÅ~_yan, deputy patriarch of the
Armenian Patriarchate based in İstanbul.

Speaking at the opening ceremony prior to the Sunday church service,
AteÅ~_yan thanked Sarıgul for his support and efforts during the
renovation, emphasizing the importance and value of showing respect
towards houses of worship, “We are all indebted to Å~^iÅ~_li Mayor
Mustafa Sarıgul, who has extended a helping hand to all sorts of
projects in places ranging from Diyarbakır to Van, as well as many
more that I do not even know about. I want to thank him on behalf of
the patriarchate,” he said.

Commenting upon the attendance of special guest Ude at the opening,
Sarıgul said he was thrilled to have the mayor of Munich present on
the occasion. “I thought long and hard about who I could invite to the

and Christian Ude came to mind. We are absolutely delighted to have
Ude, who has initiated and supported so many important projects in
Munich over the years, with us in İstanbul today,” he said. The

`Hayrenaser` aurait dû noter qu’Armenian Life reprenant copié-collé
l’article de `The Economist`, les guillemets figuraient implicitement
partout.

ISTANBUL: France To Vote On Genocide Bill By Jan. 23

FRANCE TO VOTE ON GENOCIDE BILL BY JAN. 23

Today’s Zaman
Jan 9 2012
Turkey

France is set to vote on Jan. 23 on a bill that would make it illegal
to deny the 1915 mass killing of Armenians by Ottomon Turks amounted
to genocide, a French minister said on Wednesday.

Lawmakers in France’s National Assembly — the lower house of
parliament — voted overwhelmingly in favor of a draft law outlawing
genocide denial in December, leading Ankara to cancel all economic,
political and military meetings with Paris and recalling its ambassador
for consultations.

The Senate was expected to hold hearings on the bill on Jan. 5 and 11
to which legal experts, officials from Turkish and Armenian groups
and the Turkish and Armenian ambassadors to Paris would be invited,
said Socialist senators Philippe Kaltenbach and Luc Carvounas.

The bill should then be presented to the Senate for a final vote
in the last week of January. Its backers want to see the process
completed before parliament is suspended at the end of February ahead
of presidential elections in April and May.

About 50 lawmakers were present during the debates on the bill
before the lower house enacted it last month. The majority of the
lawmakers, including Patrick Ollier, the government minister in charge
of relations with parliament who addressed the session on behalf of
the government, opposed an amendment proposal which said academic
and scientific studies on history should be exempt from punishment
set by the bill.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has described the bill as
“politics based on racism, discrimination and xenophobia” and turned
his anger on French President Nicolas Sarkozy, accusing France of
colonial massacres in Algeria.

France’s government has stressed that the bill, which mandates a
maximum 45,000-euro fine and a year in jail for offenders, was not its
own initiative but that of a lawmaker in Sarkozy’s conservative party.

An initial bid to punish denial of the Armenian genocide failed earlier
this year, killed by the Senate five years after it was passed by
the lower house.

France is Turkey’s fifth biggest export market and the sixth biggest
source of its imports, with bilateral trade worth $14 billion in the
first 10 months of 2011.

Ollier told French media on Monday that his government will bring
the bill to the agenda of Senate, adding that he believes there is
general consensus on this matter among government officials.

He said following the hearings in the Senate, the bill will be put
into a vote one day until Jan. 26.

LE SITE ATMO CHAMPAGNE-ARDENNE PIRATE PAR DES INTEGRISTES TURCS
Stephane

armenews.com
mardi 10 janvier 2012

d’echapper a toute sanction.

Chambersburg Man Celebrates Christmas In Armenia

CHAMBERSBURG MAN CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS IN ARMENIA
By IRIS HERSH

Chambersburg Public Opinion

Jan 9 2012
PA

Alfred Mueller, Chambersburg, celebrated the traditional Armenian
Christmas this week in Armenia, with his family.

“All Christians celebrated what we now call Christmas on Jan. 6 until
the 5th century A.D.,” Mueller said.

The early church did not recognize the Nativity of Christ. Instead,
it celebrated only Christ’s theophany, the revelation that Christ
was the Son of God when He was baptized by John in the Jordan,
said Mueller, who is a professor and chair of the department of
communications studies at Mount St. Mary’s University, Emmitsburg, Md.

The Catholic church retains part of this early tradition by celebrating
Epiphany, the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus, on Jan. 6.

A big change took place in 451 AD. As part of its definition of
Christ as both God and man in the same person, the church declared
that Christ’s nativity would be celebrated Dec. 25, the first day
after the winter solstice, when daylight begins to lengthen. This
change reflected the church’s theology that Christ was conceived to be
“The Light of the World.”

Armenians did not accept the church’s theological definition of
“person,” so they continued to celebrate on Jan. 6, although nativity
celebrations were added later.

This emphasis explains why Armenians celebrate Christmas without the
materialism prevalent in American tradition, Mueller said. Unlike
the American Christmas, which emphasizes a visit by Santa Claus,
Armenians do not exchange gifts on Armenian Christmas. Instead, the
Armenian Santa (Dzmer Pap) visits children on Jan. 1 — New Year’s Day.

In Armenian homes, the faithful celebrate Christmas from 5 p.m. Jan. 5
to 5 p.m. Jan. 6, during which time they eat no meat, as a spiritual
preparation for Christ’s coming.

The first evening, Armenians attend a Divine Liturgy service at church,
after which each family takes home a lighted candle to symbolize the
Light of Christ coming into their homes. Their evening meal consists of
fish, rice pilaf, greens and wine. Mueller’s family’s tradition at this
meal is to eat two types of fish and put a straw broom under the table
while eating the meal. The broom commemorate Jesus’ birth in a manger.

“That’s a Catholic tradition from eastern Europe,” he said.

The following morning, families attend another Divine Liturgy and in
early afternoon, they return to church for the Blessing of Water. Some
of that blessed water is taken home.

“Christmas dinner for Armenians introduces meat into the Christmas
celebration,” said Mueller. “In our home, we ate a meal that consisted
of beef, pork and chicken shish kebab, salads and wine. But each
family’s traditional meal differs.”
