SACRAMENTO—Senator Anthony J. Portantino announced that the Armenian American Museum funding approved in last year’s budget has been programmed for expenditure this year in Governor Brown’s proposed budget announced Wednesday.

This confirms that $3 million of the $4 million approved has actually been programmed for expenditure. The museum project is located for the City of Glendale and includes Genocide education and multicultural exhibits. Plans for its creation are underway with broad support from within the Armenian community, including its ten largest organizations.

“I am very glad that the Governor’s Budget proposal maintains the State’s commitment to keep funding this important project. The Armenian American Museum will share the rich Armenian history and culture in the state of California for generations to appreciate. As the District 25 Senator, I represent the largest Armenian American community in the country, I am proud to support the museum and happy that the state is invested in its success,” commented Portantino.

Last year, Portantino arranged for the museum to present directly to the State Senate for a three million dollar budget request. The Senate approved the Portantino request and included it in the final state budget. The $1 million announced today is the promised annual allotment.

Sen. Portantino represents nearly 930,000 people in the 25th Senate District, which includes Altadena, Atwater Village, Bradbury, Burbank, Claremont, Duarte, Glendale, Glendora, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, La Verne, Lake View Terrace, Los Feliz, Monrovia, Montrose, Pasadena, San Dimas, San Marino, Shadow Hills, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena, Sunland-Tujunga, and Upland.

President Sargsyan: ‘We are in a position to defend our borders and we will defend our homeland’

Panorama, Armenia
Dec 4 2017

On Saturday, the second day of the Armenian President’s working visit to the Republic of Artsakh, within the framework of the ongoing cooperation between the armed forces of the two Armenian republics, President Serzh Sargsyan and Artsakh Republic President Bako Sahakyan joined the and Defense Ministers and high-ranking army officials of the two republics to inspect the military exercises conducted by the Defense Army’s unified command in the southeastern section of Artsakh. President Sargsyan encouraged the most prominent servicemen with various incentives, the presidential press service reported.

On the same day, the President of the Republic of Armenia attended the commissioning of a multi-apartment residential building for servicemen, as well as the openings of a newly built canteen and barracks at one of the military units. Serzh Sargsyan handed awards and incentives to the best officers, contract and conscript soldiers for dedicated and excellent service.

“Strong defense calls for effort, due diligence and hard work, which can ultimately lead to high professionalism. Modern armed forces imply not only state-of-the-art armament, but also the ability to apply it at the right moment and to its full capacity. I am grateful to you for today’s drills which testified to your high efficiency.

Believe me, this is your response to all those who want to take away our homeland, who are trying to put on show their might and get something out of us. Peoples can protect their homeland if your type is dominant in them. We are in a position to defend our borders and we will defend our homeland. I would like to thank your parents, your teachers, all those who have contributed to your upbringing,” Mr. Sargsyan said, wishing the servicemen a dignified stance and successful service.

Turkey is showing its belligerent face on the world stage

The revealing of Turkey's longstanding authoritarian and belligerent
face is greatly appreciated ( "NATO is headed for a very messy
break-up," Stephen Kinzer, Ideas, Nov. 12).
Turkey has always been unworthy of allied relations with Western
nations and merits no place in Euro-Atlantic organizations, where
member states are under equal commitments and obligations and may not
abandon common values. The country's aggressive form of nationalism,
dismal genocidal and human-rights record, meddling in European
elections, violent attacks on peaceful American protesters, support
for religious extremism, incursions into Syria and Iraq to target
Christians and Kurds, and illegal occupation of Northern Cyprus and
Western Armenia are central testaments to these facts.
The Soviet-led Warsaw Pact is history, and the Cold War should be long
over. A world without the North Atlantic Treaty Organization would
certainly reduce arms buildups and military flareups globally and
ensure a more peaceful and prosperous world order - one in which
multilateral international organizations like the United Nations are
given the opportunity to function optimally.

Music: Armenia: AMPTV sticks to Depi Evratesil format

ESC Today, EU
Oct 27 2017

Armenian national broadcaster AMPTV has announced to launch the second edition of the national selection Depi Evratesil. The call for submissions is now open. The winner is to represent the country at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon.

The format of Depi Evratesil was first introduced last year when, from hundreds of applications from all over the world, Artsvik eventually headed to Kiev with her song “Fly with Me” . However, in order to select her successor, the contest will undergo a big change. Unlike its previous edition the artists will compete by presenting their original songs, penned especially for this contest. While in the previous edition, candidates entered the competition mainly with world known hits or eurovision hits. The show is set to consist of four live shows.

The eligibility criteria does not seem to be changed. The candidates should hold Armenian citizenship or have Armenian heritage, be 16 years old by May 8th – the first Eurovision semifinal date. All the interested artists can find the full criteria and apply on for the competition on the website of AMPTV  by 15th December 2017.

Baku Pogrom Survivor Liyah Babayan Announces Bid for Twin Falls City Council in Idaho

Liyah Babayan

TWIN FALLS CITY, Idaho – Armenian-American businesswoman and community leader Liyah Babayan is running for the Twin Falls City Council, reports the Idaho Chapter of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

“After serious thought, prayer and the blessing of my family, I am excited to announce my candidacy for Twin Falls City Council and respectfully ask for your vote this November 7th to represent #ThePeopleFirst as your next City Councilwoman,” remarked Babayan in an announcement to her supporters.  “I accept with grace the opportunity to give back to the city and country that gave my family a second chance at life.”

Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, Babayan survived the 1990 pogrom and massacre against Christian Armenians, eventually finding refuge with her family in the US state of Idaho, where she has become a respected small business owner, School Board member, and ANCA activist.

“It is a great pleasure to see young Armenian-Americans, especially survivors of anti-Christian pogroms in Azerbaijan, run for public office in the United States of America,” remarked ANCA Western Region chair Nora Hovsepian. “Liyah’s commitment to civic engagement and justice was best illustrated last year when she led the grassroots pressure that compelled the withdrawing of an absurd resolution in the Idaho legislature, prompting MagicValley.com’s February 18, 2016 headline, ‘Armenian Lobbying Group Kills Idaho Resolution Praising Azerbaijan.’ We wish Liyah best of luck and call on the Armenian-American community to support her noble pursuit of representing the hardworking people of Twin Falls, Idaho on the City Council,” continued Hovsepian.

Donations to Babayan’s campaign can be made online. For details about her campaign, visit www.liyahbabayan.com.

The full text of her biography from LiyahBabayan.com is below:

Local small business owner Liyah Babayan is most known for her hyper-local influence and leadership. Surviving religious persecution and ethnic killings, her family arrived in Twin Falls as refugees when she was ten years old. Liyah watched her educated parents tirelessly work two full time jobs each, lowest paying, entry level to rebuild their life in the United States from absolutely nothing. Homelessness and extreme poverty is a reality Liyah understands first hand, as her family experienced both. To help her family out, Liyah started working at the age of 13 until she graduated from Twin Falls High School. This work ethic became the guiding principle of her life.

Liyah studied military and political science at Southern Oregon University and History at College of Southern Idaho. From a young age she loved the hustle and free market spirit of the American Dream. An entrepreneur at heart, at 22 years old Liyah took a leap of faith. Launching her business Ooh La La Boutique, during the peak of the Great Recession, cultivated her resourcefulness and smart budgeting practices. She knows the important role small business plays in the local economy and personally understands how government can support these leaders to succeed or slow progress with excessive and overreaching regulations. Under Liyah’s direction, Ooh La La became a platform for empowerment in the Magic Valley by raising awareness and resources for various groups. Liyah shares the value of compassionate response throughout our community, addressing various causes dear to her including elderly neglect, cycle of poverty, childhood food insecurity, addiction recovery, and cultural integration of refugees.

Volunteering on various city and civic commissions, Liyah asks the difficult questions and takes a courageous stand on issues affecting the residents of Twin Falls. As a community leader she served three years as our School Board of Trustee, working on budgeting, building schools, and hiring a superintendent. Her leadership style is transparent, bold, and accountable. As a mother, she understands parents and the concern for their children to grow up in a safe and healthy community. Liyah delivers a unique voice and perspective to strategic plans, policy, and decision making. There is a huge difference between being elected and getting things done. Liyah Babayan gets things done! Service to community is the consistent theme of her professional career for the last ten years in the Magic Valley. Representing ‘The People First’ is Liyah’s number one priority as she advocates for a more transparent, inclusive, and responsible local government!
