HRD: Azerbaijan accumulates tanks near Karabakh village

PanARMENIAN.Net – Azerbaijan has “demonstratively” accumulated tanks near the Nagorno-Karabakh village of Khramort, after intimidating residents for weeks, Human Rights Defender Kristinne Grigoryan said.

Grigoryan said she is constant contact with the Ombudsman and the Prosecutor General of Artsakh (Karabakh).

“Yesterday, there were intensive shootings in the direction of Khramort village of Askeran region and Karmir Shuka and Khnushinak villages of Martuni region. During the day, the shootings in the direction of Khramort were accompanied by the criminal acts of exerting psychological pressure against the civilian population, by giving “warnings” in Armenian language over a loudspeaker for the population to leave the village,” Grigoryan said.

“This criminal act against the civilian population intensified overnight in the direction of Khramort village, where the Azerbaijani armed forces implemented the use of mortar. One civilian has been wounded. The enemy also demonstratively accumulated heavy equipment (tanks) in the direction of the village. For the purpose of the security of the civilian population, women and children were evacuated overnight to a more secure location, however, according to the information provided by my colleagues, they have returned to the village in the morning.”

The Armenian Human Rights Defender condemned the ongoing criminal policy of the Azerbaijani military-political leadership, which she said is aimed at violating the life and security of people living in their homeland, terrorizing them, and causing them constant crisis.

“It is clearly evident that the ultimate goal of such acts is to remove the Armenian communities in Artsakh from their native Armenian population, which is a manifestation of the ongoing policy of Armenophobia and ethnic hatred,” the Ombudswoman said.

“On the other hand, the irresponsible behavior of the Azerbaijani state is aimed at damaging the reputation of the Russian peacekeeping mission and undermining the enormous efforts made to ensure the peaceful life of the civilian population.”

The Defense Army said earlier that the Azerbaijani military used mortars to fire on civilian settlements in Nagorno-Karabakh throughout the night. In total 23 shells were fired towards the villages of Khnushinak and Khramort since March 9, when ceasefire violations began to intensify.

Ex-President Kocharyan: Armenia authorities do not want to talk about Karabakh so as not to pin hopes on them

 NEWS.am
Armenia – Feb 17 2022

My impression is that the Armenian authorities do not want to talk about Karabakh, so that the societies of Armenia and Karabakh do not pin their hopes on them on this issue. The second President of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, stated this during his press conference Thursday.

“And it will work. By not talking for a couple of years, to create the impression that they have nothing to do with that issue. ‘If you have any questions, discuss [them] with the Russians’; and this is done consciously,” Kocharyan added.

“The Azerbaijani side will put [at the negotiating table] the recording of the speeches of the Armenian MPs, and will say that, ‘Your leader [i.e., PM Nikol Pashinyan] accepts that Armenia has long recognized the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. The recording that your leader admits that never—even since 2016—there was a theoretical chance to discuss Karabakh outside Azerbaijan,’ and even questioned the Armenianness of Karabakh.

(…). I await the talks with great concern. I even wonder if they are needed now, as long as these authorities are in Armenia. You have to go and accept that negotiations will be held within the framework of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, including the issue of Karabakh and the Armenianness Karabakh will be on the table.

They will just talk about communities. We have put ourselves in this situation in order to justify ourselves from the accusations, and the whole negotiation process was sacrificed to that objective of justifying,” the former president of Armenia noted.

Armenia arrests 19 suspected spies as it dismantles foreign spy network

Armenia has arrested 19 of its nationals who were collecting intelligence about Yerevan’s armed forces for a foreign spy network, the secret service said Thursday.

One of those arrested said in footage released by the secret service that he had allegedly spied for Azerbaijan, with whom Armenia’s long-simmering conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh flared anew into war late last year.

The military intelligence department of Armenia’s national security service said it had “arrested 19 people suspected of high treason, some of whom confessed.”

It said that “a foreign secret service has set up a network that involved Armenian nationals, employees of the country’s armed forces.”

It added: “They had access to classified documents and were collecting information about Armenian military facilities, weapons, and personnel.”

The statement gave no further detail.

In autumn 2020, the protracted territorial dispute over Azerbaijan’s Armenian-populated Nagorno-Karabakh region flared into an all-out war that claimed more than 6,500 lives.

The 44-day war ended with a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement under which Armenia ceded swathes of territory it had controlled for decades.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met in December twice, in Moscow and Brussels, for rare face-to-face talks to discuss normalization.

Ethnic Armenian separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh broke away from Azerbaijan as the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, and an ensuing armed conflict claimed around 30,000 lives.
