The third Global Armenian Summit has opened with a formal ceremony, with strengthening Armenia–diaspora ties as its central objective. Around 800 representatives of Armenian communities from approximately 55 countries have arrived in Armenia to attend the summit.

In his opening address, Armenian National Assembly Speaker Ruben Rubinyan stressed that discussions of relations between Armenia and the diaspora must highlight the ideology of Real Armenia.

“Real Armenia is our state, with its internationally recognised territory and borders, citizens, state institutions, democratic system and aspiration for development. Advancing the concept of Real Armenia does not mean abandoning our history, national identity, culture or ties with Armenians around the world. On the contrary, it means making our rich heritage a foundation for strong statehood and modern development.

“We have thousands of years of history and have made a significant contribution to world civilisation. We have a diaspora that has preserved its identity in different countries while achieving great success in science, technology, business, culture and public life. This is our wealth, but the task before us is to turn that wealth into a future and direct it towards Armenia.

“We do not want to limit Armenia–diaspora relations to patriotic feelings, historical memory or charity alone. These are important, but our cooperation must be broader. We want to see diaspora professionals contribute to the development of various sectors in Armenia. If that contribution takes the form of repatriation, we Armenians living in Armenia will be extremely happy,” Rubinyan said.

The National Assembly speaker added that the summit should go beyond good discussions and fine words to become a launchpad for concrete ideas, initiatives and new programmes of cooperation.

High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs Zareh Sinanyan stressed that the third Global Armenian Summit was an important platform for continuing dialogue between the Republic of Armenia and the diaspora.

“The diaspora is diverse in its history, experiences, achievements, perspectives and approaches. Its great potential lies precisely in this diversity. The potential of Armenia–diaspora relations lies not in agreeing on every issue, but in the ability to listen to one another, respect different views and unite around common goals. At the heart of those common goals is a sovereign, democratic, peaceful and prosperous Republic of Armenia,” Sinanyan said.

Working discussions at the third Global Armenian Summit will begin on 6 November. The summit will conclude on 8 November.
