The torture of Armenian prisoners kept in Baku continues and is accompanied by inhumane treatment. Siranush Sahakyan, the representative of the interests of the Armenian prisoners at the ECHR, announced this at the “Return of Armenian Prisoners” international conference, presenting the facts and the methodology of the work behind that conclusion.
According to Sahakyan, they have spoken about the problem many times, but sometimes a question is raised: how is it possible to draw conclusions about the treatment of prisoners held in Baku in conditions of limited information?
He clarified that the evaluations are based on the data collected and combined with a clear methodology. In particular, human rights defenders continue to deal with cases of torture of prisoners who have already been repatriated. Their testimonies and medical documents make it possible to retrospectively examine the period of imprisonment in Baku and confirm the facts of torture with objective data.
“If we combine them, we will see that there are tortures beyond reasonable doubt, they are continuous and, yes, they are also combined with inhumane treatment,” Sahakyan emphasized.
He also noted that the connection of prisoners kept in Baku with the outside world is phone calls.
