ARAVOT: ARMENIAN POLITICIAN CRITICAL OF EURASIAN UNION PLAN

17.01.13

A former member of the opposition Armenian National Congress, David
Shahnazaryan, has described Russia’s EU integration policies as a
civilization exclave.

In comments to the paper, he said the recent debate over the EU and
the Eurasian Union is a the Kremlin’s propaganda project.

“Russia is trying in this way to place the European Union and the
Eurasian Union on the same scales, but they are not absolutely
equivalent. While the European Union is an accomplished institution
built on universal human values, the Eurasian Union is a political
project by the new empire – I would even say a civilization exclave
project – whose future is dimmer than its present. Membership in the
Customs Union is not in Armenia’s interests; and not just for economic
reasons. That restricts our sovereignty because the Customs Union
documents already provide for membership in supra-state institutions,
which conflicts with our Constitution,” Shahnazaryan told the paper,
adding that Russia is openly pressuring Armenia into joining the
Eurasian Union and Customs Union.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
