The opposition political forces will gain leading positions in
Armenia’s Parliament provided free and fair parliamentary elections
are held.

Next March and April, political discontent will be accompanied by
graver social problems, Armen Martirosyan, a member of the Heritage
parliamentary group, told journalists Nov. 8.

With respect to coming elections, he noted that the Heritage party
has not yet launched its election campaign. However, “we hold
public meetings, report to the people, listen to their opinion –
in contrast to our rivals, who are not ashamed of distributing party
cards in schools, with no one warning them against violating the law,”
Martirosyan said.

No political party will have parliamentary majority provided fair
elections are held. “But we see that the incumbent authorities are
employing their levers in a very rude manner. This being so, I do
not hope for fair elections,” Martirosyan said.

“Rapid political developments are taking place. Evidence thereof is
the recent releases of the Parliament speaker, chief of Armenia’s
police, Yerevan mayor. They are, no doubt, elections-related moves.

Further dismissals should be expected,” Martirosyan said.

According to him, further developments should be expected in Armenia’s
political arena until next January-February.

The Heritage party will certainly run for Parliament as “a political
alternative.”

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
