Business does not protect the interests of the Armenian language,
Sergo Yeritsyan, Head of the State Inspection for Language, said at
the seminar on Bologna Process principles on Nov 4-6, in Yerevan.
He said that companies are reluctant to hang shop-signs in Armenian
alongside with the English. Legal loopholes are obstacle to the
efficient fight of the State Inspection against such violations,
he said.
“To impose a fine on a company, we have to petition the court. Some
judges protract trials for a year or more,” he said. Yeritsyan recalled
that the court is currently considering a total of 38 cases.
Yeritsyan thinks that a Law On State Inspection for Language
would allow avoiding the court. So far, the Inspection acts on
the basis of the following laws: On Advertising, On Language, On
Administrative offences and On Organization and Conduct of Inspections
at Organizations in the Territory of Armenia.
“Now, we are studying a package of bills implying increase of fines
to 400,000 drams,” Yeritsyan said.
