At least 15 killed, dozens wounded in Iran train crash

Reuters – Two passenger trains collided in Iran’s north-central province of Semnan on early Friday, killing at least 15 people and injuring over 50 others, Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported.

“The death toll has reached eight and some 52 others have been injured. The injured passengers have been transferred to nearby hospitals,” Fars quoted local officials as saying.

Iranian media gave no details on the number of passengers in the trains.

State television showed footage of four derailed carriages, with two of them on fire. A spokesman for Iran’s Red Crescent, Mostafa Mortazavi, told Fars that firefighters were trying to control the blaze.

“The accident happened when a passenger train in motion crashed to another one that had stopped at the station,” it said.

The cause of the collision was under investigation, it said, adding that rescue teams have been dispatched to the site of accident.

The crash occurred at the Haft-Khan station in the city of Shahroud, about 400 kilometers east of Tehran.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
