After a 29-year break, Armenia resumed the nomination of monuments to the UN

In the joint session of the standing committees of the National Assembly, within the framework of the discussion of the draft state budget for 2027, KGSMS Minister Zhanna Andreasyan, presenting the main achievements and priorities of the culture sector, emphasized that after a 29-year break, Armenia resumed the process of including new monuments in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Until 2031, it is planned to include 5 more monuments or groups of monuments in the preliminary list of World Heritage.

“Inclusion in the UNESCO lists is not only an opportunity for international recognition, but also an opportunity to increase the quality of management, because one of the important conditions is also the existence of a proper management system of monuments,” emphasized Zhanna Andreasyan.

At present, works are being carried out in the direction of processing applications for the historical capital of Artashat and the rock-hewn settlements of Syunik region. It is planned to nominate one of the Armenian castles as well. The popularization of intangible cultural heritage is also continuing. According to the minister, in the coming years it is planned to present two more elements for inclusion in the relevant lists of UNESCO.

Referring to the already recorded results, Zhanna Andreasyan singled out “Areni-1 cave. Primitive Life and Winemaking in the Arpa River Gorge” application, as well as the application related to traditions related to rain and water, presented jointly with Iran, which provides an opportunity to popularize the Armenian tradition of Vardavar on the international stage.

In 2027 about 1.79 billion drams will be allocated for fixing and restoration of monuments

According to the minister, state allocations for the restoration of monuments have significantly increased in recent years. If in 2022 213 million drams were provided for this purpose, then in 2025 the financing reached 1.386 billion drams, increasing by 6.5 times. And in 2027, about 1.79 billion drams are planned for fixing, repairing and restoring monuments. Works will be carried out in 21 monuments, 13 of which will continue the already started projects, and 8 will start new works. It is planned to restore 40 more monuments by the end of 2031.

Zhanna Andreasyan emphasized that the number of endangered monuments in Armenia reaches several hundreds, so it is necessary to maintain the pace of restoration works. At the same time, within the framework of public-private cooperation, restoration works are being carried out in 9 more historical and cultural monuments.
