The Armenian authorities’ interest in the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) has run its course.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said this during a briefing with journalists at the government headquarters, responding to a question from Armenpress about how Armenia would react if the Collective Security Council, meeting in Moscow in November, decided to apply Article 25 of the CSTO Charter to Armenia. This would temporarily deprive Armenia of its voting rights in the CSTO and its ability to nominate candidates for posts allocated under its quota.

“I want us to state once and for all that our interest in the CSTO has run its course,” Pashinyan stressed.

CSTO Secretary General Talatbek Masadykov said on 5 November that there was no question of expelling Armenia from the organisation, but that the forthcoming Council meeting could decide to apply Article 25 of its Charter to Armenia. Under that article, Armenia could lose its right to nominate candidates for CSTO posts allocated under its quota, as well as its voting rights, until it paid its outstanding membership contributions.

Armenia has frozen its participation in CSTO activities since February 2024. It does not participate in events held within the CSTO framework and does not pay membership contributions.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
