Armenian wrestler Karen Aslanyan credited his gold medal at the Greco-Roman wrestling World Championships in Kazakhstan to calmness, focus and consistent work.

“I think I did the same work as at previous championships, but this time I was calmer, more composed and more focused. This is also the result of good teamwork. During the championships, I wasn’t aiming to finish my bouts as quickly as possible. I approached them very calmly,” Aslanyan told reporters at Zvartnots Airport after returning from the World Championships.

He believes his success was due to approaching the tournament without tension.

“What you saw on the mat was the result of years of experience, which led to this outcome. Every member of the national team contributed to this victory, especially my coaches,” he stressed.

Armenia won two medals at the Greco-Roman wrestling World Championships.

Gevorg Tadevosyan claimed bronze in the 87 kg category, while Aslanyan became world champion in the 63 kg category.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
