Thousands of young people marched through central Vienna to protest against cuts to university funding, Vienna.at reported.
The large-scale demonstration began outside the main building of the Vienna University of Technology. Following a rally, students marched through the city’s central streets. Traffic restrictions caused congestion, while police vehicles accompanied the marchers.
According to the organisers, around 20,000 people took part. Protesters chanted slogans and held placards demanding that funding for education and science should not be cut.
Cuts to higher education and science funding in Austria are due to take effect in 2028. The university community fears that a lack of resources will lead to staff reductions, poorer study conditions and fewer opportunities for scientific research.
