Sahara: Armenia backs Morocco’s autonomy plan

During the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Armenia expressed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan described the plan as one that «paves the way for strengthening the territorial unity of the Kingdom of Morocco» after meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
Mirzoyan also mentioned a letter from Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to King Mohammed VI.
«We welcome your personal contribution to efforts aimed at the peaceful settlement of conflicts. In this regard, we attach particular importance to the initiative submitted by the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations in April 2007 concerning the Sahara issue, which we consider to be a realistic political solution. United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025, marked a decisive step in this process. We are convinced that it will promote the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco, as well as the peaceful coexistence and prosperity of the peoples of the region», Pashinyan wrote in his message of July 29, issued for Throne Day.
During their meeting, the two ministers explored new avenues for bilateral cooperation, agreeing on concrete measures to be implemented soon. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues.
