Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has criticised France after French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot condemned the human rights situation in Iran while publishing a joint statement by European countries on the issue.
More than 30 European countries, along with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, condemned the executions of protesters in Iran in a joint statement. The countries called on Iran to “immediately end the use of the death penalty”, listen to its people demanding change, and take concrete steps to uphold human rights.
Publishing the August 12 joint statement on X, Jean-Noël Barrot wrote that the “inhuman repression” must end, those responsible must be held accountable and political prisoners must be released.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the statement, referring to the position of European countries on Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip.
“Countries like France need to stop lecturing the world about ‘human rights’ and international law. The hypocrisy is blatant and shameful. Your support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza and aggression against Iran has destroyed the moral high ground you thought you had,” Araghchi wrote on X.
