Against the background of export complications in the Russian market, the executive of Armenia will provide financial assistance of 450 million drams to local fish farms. At the same time, the state makes a strong demand to put an end to the shadow economy in the area and the merciless exploitation of natural resources.

The support program was approved at the session of the Government on July 30. Financial resources will be directed to 135 fish farms operating in Ararat and Armavir marzes. About 24,000 tons of fish are produced annually in Armenia, the majority of which are salmon and sturgeon. More than 40 percent of this volume has traditionally been sold in the Russian Federation, but recent export barriers have forced immediate action.

The state will reimburse 20 percent of the average monthly cost of fish feed purchased by businessmen during the first half of 2026. Considering that about 27 billion drams worth of feed is consumed annually in the republic, this compensation will significantly ease the financial burden of producers.

Executive Head Nikol Pashinyan during the session, he made a strong reference to the shadow activities of the sector. The Prime Minister emphasized that in exchange for the consumption of such a priceless resource as the artesian basin, fish farming provides only 2.5 to 3 billion drams of tax revenue per year. Pashinyan considered the problem alarming, urging the state bodies to wage a consistent fight against the huge shadow turnover in parallel with the support and bring the sector into the legal tax field.
