Armenia and Iran have agreed to create a working group that will discuss the details of the expansion of the gas-for-electricity program, including possible dates. Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Davit Khudatyan announced this.

According to the minister, it was recorded that the Islamic Republic of Iran needs additional electricity, and the Republic of Armenia needs natural gas. “We are successfully implementing the “gas for electricity” program in certain volumes, and it is obvious that our existing opportunities are greater for the implementation of this program. For example, the capacity of the gas pipeline is greater, and after the construction of the 400 kV power line, we will also be able to increase the volume of electricity supply. Therefore, there is an opportunity to expand the transaction to mutually supply and receive gas and electricity in larger volumes,” Khudatyan said.

He noted that the parties have agreed to create a working group that will discuss all the details of the expansion of the project, including the possible deadlines. Referring to the question of whether Armenia is looking for a substitute for Russian gas and for this purpose is trying to expand cooperation with Iran, the minister noted that there is no such concern.

“There is no concern. This is a work process. We have been running this deal for many years, non-stop, all 12 months of the year. In different years, there have been certain changes in the volume, but now we just noted that there is an opportunity to expand the scope of the project. This issue will be discussed by the working groups to be created,” Khudatyan emphasized.
