“There will be nothing to be surprised about if the EU demands the withdrawal of the Russian military base

July 28, 2026

Member of the Executive Body (GM) of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), former First Deputy Minister of Defense Artak Zakaryan writes: “It has not been a secret for a long time that, very directly, Armenia is required to hold two referendums. It also proves that they do not trust the decisions made by Nikol’s government.

Instead, they expect the decision of the Armenian people.

Azerbaijan says: let the Armenian people change the constitution they adopted, renounce the declaration of independence, Artsakh and the Artsakh issue.

The EAEU says: let the Armenian people decide whether to stay in the EAEU or leave the EAEU and make hopeless attempts to join the EU for 25-30 years.

Nicol’s government has made so many controversial, ill-considered, changeable and self-centered decisions and laws that outside actors no longer trust them.

It will no longer be surprising if one fine day the EU demands, for example, a referendum on the withdrawal of the Russian military base. Either Iran will demand to put to a referendum the issue of implementing the “TRIP route” or continuing the “North-South” transport route…

And this sad reality some call “sovereignty”.
