Mary Vardanyan, one of the oldest inhabitants of the planet and one of the last witnesses of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, passed away at the age of 112. A person whose life itself was a living testimony of the failure of the plans to destroy the Armenian people.
He was born in 1914 in Western Armenia. He was only one year old when the world collapsed into displacement, famine and carnage. As a child, in the arms of his parents fleeing from death, he overcame the deserts of the Middle East. He survived where it was statistically impossible to survive, and he took with him the memory of the people who were robbed of their right to a name, a home and a future.
Passing through Syria and Lebanon, Mary found a new home in Boston, America. There he lived a long, dignified life, surrounded by generations of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In recent decades, her fragile figure has consistently drawn the attention of hundreds of people at April 24 commemorations in Massachusetts. Mary Vardanyan did not need to say loud words. only his presence, his clear look and deep wrinkles were the main evidence of tragedy and, at the same time, the main victory of life.
In the Armenian community, his longevity was perceived as a miracle and a symbolic victory. Mary Vardanyan proved. you can take away the land, you can destroy the houses, but you cannot destroy the roots if they are really strong.
With his death, another page of the living, unscarred memory of 1915 was closed. Those who saw it with their own eyes leave. Now it is the responsibility of the survivors to keep that “moat” of memory.
