Mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, Washington and Tehran have reached wide-ranging agreements that include the partial lifting of sanctions on Iranian exports and the establishment of direct ties. The next round of Swiss negotiations ended with the approval of the sixty-day road map for the settlement of conflicts in the Middle East.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran Abbas Araghchi announced the results of the dialogue on June 22. According to the minister, thanks to the tangible progress registered on the Swiss platform, customs duties and restrictions on the export of Iranian oil and petrochemical products have been completely eliminated.
In addition, a part of the assets of the Islamic Republic was unfrozen, and a massive program of economic recovery of the country was launched. Araghchi described these achievements as a great success, especially in the context of the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon.
One of the key elements of the agreement is the creation of a special communication channel between the American and Iranian military to prevent incidents and ensure the safety of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Tensions in the region rose sharply on June 20, when Tehran announced the re-closure of the strait due to ongoing Israeli operations in Lebanon, accusing the US of failing to fulfill its commitments. This crisis move followed just days earlier, on June 15, Donald Trump and Massoud Pezeshkian signing a framework agreement to extend the ceasefire and unblock the strait.
In order to comprehensively solve the regional problems, a special tripartite group for the settlement of the situation in Lebanon was created with the participation of the USA, Iran and the Lebanese side. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar described the atmosphere of the summit held in the Bürgenstock resort on the shore of Lake Lucerne as highly constructive, recording hopeful progress.
Technical negotiations on nuclear issues, sanctions relief mechanisms and monitoring will continue until the end of the week, and the high-level committee will monitor the implementation of the approved road map with a view to concluding a final agreement.
