Telecom Armenia and AzerTelecom have signed a bilateral agreement on the commercial transit and delivery of internet traffic through the territories of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Per the agreement, the Azerbaijani side will be able to provide internet connectivity between mainland Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan using Armenian infrastructure.
In exchange for this service, the Azerbaijani side will pay the Armenian company an amount that Telecom Armenia has not specified. It is a commercial matter.
Under the agreement, Telecom Armenia, a leading transit operator in the region, will expand the geography and number of countries receiving international internet traffic through its network infrastructure, providing transit services toward Azerbaijan.
The companies said the agreement is aimed at enhancing the diversification of regional connectivity routes, improving the reliability and resilience of telecommunications networks, and fostering cooperation in the telecommunications sector.
The partnership is expected to contribute to the development of regional digital infrastructure by creating additional opportunities for international data transmission and strengthening connectivity across the South Caucasus.
Connections will be made in Kornidzor and Yeraskh in Armenia’s Syunik and Ararat provinces, respectively. According to Telecom Armenia Deputy Director Aram Barseghyan, the National Security Service must first issue corresponding permits.
According to Barseghyan, the Azerbaijani side will only have access to the 100 gigabit per second cable, not to data. The Azerbaijanis will not connect to the Armenian network, but will be able to use the cables.
“The cable does not enter Armenia, but at the border, as it is with Georgia, Turkey, and Iran. Everyone brings their own cable, a cable is installed right at the border, and it goes from point A to point B,” Barseghyan said in an interview with Azatutyun.am, explaining the transit aspect to Nakhichevan.
According to him, “it’s as if you have a border checkpoint, you provide service solely through the Telecom Armenia network, as it goes, it comes from Kornidzor to Yeraskh via the border, and not through that settlement.”
“It’s not the internet… there is no internet, it’s just a transit channel through which they use their internet… We don’t sell them any Armenian goods, we don’t sell them anything from Armenia, we give them the opportunity through our channel, like to get from point A to point B, so that they can go from Nakhichevan to Azerbaijan and vice versa,” Barseghyan said, adding that this is “a very big strategic advantage.”
In essence, it’s an agreement that follows the logic of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, while is not directly part of the TRIPP project, Barseghyan explained.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan regularly has announced that within the framework of TRIPP, there also will be other transit infrastructures on the territory of Armenia, such as cable, gas pipeline and others.
