The government of Armenia is expanding the state program for the development of sheep breeding and goat breeding, responding to the demand of the private sector.
From now on, farmers will have the opportunity to purchase up to a thousand pedigree animals with state subsidies, which will stimulate the increase in the production and processing of not only meat, but also milk.
Changes and additions to the 2024-2028 program were approved at the May 14 executive meeting. According to Deputy Minister of Economy Arman Khojoyan, in the past, each beneficiary was compensated for the purchase of a maximum of 300 heads. However, the responses of business representatives indicate that a larger number of animals will allow to create large and efficient farms.
According to the new regulations, legal entities and individual entrepreneurs can get back 50 percent of the cost of purchased pedigree cattle. In case of importation from abroad, the maximum amount of compensation is set at 450,000 AMD per head, and 300,000 AMD when purchasing from the domestic market with a pedigree card.
One of the important innovations of the program is the requirement for mandatory registration of animals in the information system of registration of agricultural animals, which will ensure clear traceability of the number of animals. According to official data, around 2,350 animals have already been purchased within the framework of previous programs, and for the current year, an application for the purchase of another 1,300 animals has been approved.
